The Ark of the Covenant found: In Zimbabwe
So there was a documentary shown on Channel 4 in the UK last night about an archaeological search for the lost Ark. It certainly didn't seem to be a religiously motivated search, which pleased me. Ultimately I don't know whether to believe this or not, but it was interesting so I want to tell you about it. So, the search begins with finding out when the Ark alledgedly went missing which was supposedly in the sixth century BC when the Babylonians invaded Jerusalem. However no records could be found of it being taken by the Babylonians (whose carvings often depicted processions of treasure carried home from wars. So it appeared to have been moved before the Babylonians sacked the city (note the seige took several years). Archaeologists then found a copper scroll which showed the whereabouts of hidden treasures from the time of the invasion of Jerusalem, but no mention of the Ark.
The documentary then looked at several other theories all of them quickly proved false. The archaeologist/presenter of the documentary presented his own theory, that the ark was not the large golden box described in Exodus but more a wooden box as described in Deuteronomy, as the Jews, coming out of Egypt would not have had the time or resources to make such a box. He also makes the discovery of a tribe called the Lemba in South Africa and Zimbabwe who claim to be a lost Jewish people. Indeed, although they looked pretty much African, genetic evidence proved that they had the genes of the Jewish priestly class, as well as evidence in the culture and music of the tribe. This tribe also had a well preserved oral history which documented their journey from Sena in Yemen to Africa about a thousand years ago, carrying with them a holy object with a name I can neither remember or pronounce. The story also checks out with the writing of an Islamic scholar at the time who also speaks of them. So, our man goes back to Jerusalem to show how these people got to Sena from Jerusalem about the time of the invasion and were forced to move on when Islam became more present more than a thousand years later and from there could in a matter of days sailed down the East African coast.
The trouble is that the Lemba people don't actually have their holy object anymore. But he checks out a rather mediocre archaeological discovery, a wooden drum found in Zimbabwe with handles through which could be passed poles for carrying and speculates how the Ark could have been a drum, as it supposedly led into battle and struck fear in the hearts of the enemy, much like drums do in war. The drum is then carbon dates and the result comes back that it is only 600 years old, which despite obviously not being as old as the original ark, actually fits with the oral tradition of the Lemba people who say that a replacement was made about that time, obviously wood is not a lasting material. But, could the original ark have been a drum? It isn't a very Semitic way of expressing religious belief, but as the Jews had just come out of Egypt, where they had been aware not just of Egyptian culture but various African cultures (through trading up the Nile) it is possible that they might have taken this on board. Indeed the Golden chest described in Exodus (and in the Indiana Jones movie) is actually very alike to many Egyptian chests found from that era, so if not a chest why not a drum.
Now, I don't know enough to know whether or not this is true. It is entirely possible that the Ark of the Covenant was a real artifact, at the same time it's possible it was just fiction and this archaeologist has it wrong. However the argument did make some sense. I'm wondering if any of the scholarly members like Rook could enlighten me on this.

Its is a real artifact. I was created to destory the universe. It was also created to rebuild rings that have been destroyed. Lucky for us though that it won't be for about 300 to 400 years before it will be discovered...
P.S. i am making a halo reference to any who dont understand
I've read the book and watched the movie, and I'm literally disgusted by it. This guy only makes references to the Old Testament when they suit him, and generally when he makes the references they are literal references (for example at one part he goes to the place where Moses traditionally is said to have struck a rock and water sprang forth from it). His main link to the ark is a tribal people who have migrated from the area of Palestine hundreds of years ago. At least, he stretches the DNA evidence and calls them "Jews", even though there is no singular "Jewish" DNA strand - it may be semitic, but the Jews descendants are basically transplanted transJordians, Syrians, Babylonians and Assyrians. That doesn't take into account the Hellenistic cross-marrying so there may even be some Greek and Italian blood in there as well.
In any event, he did not find the ark, he found a drum that was constructed in Africa as a tribal thing. It is not the Ark of the Covenant, not in any form, and his arguments for it being that are not convincing. His book is a sham and the title is misleading.

And once again, I have to pipe in here. Just as proving a human existed is meaningless, just as proving an object exists, when the attempt to prove such has nothing to do with the magical claims of the holy books. IT IS A SO THE F WHAT. Even if a "golden" or "wooden" arc existed, it wouldn't prove that angels would pop out and shoot death rays out of their eyes.
If one is to believe in the magic of the bible, then they should be willing to treat the depiction that "Raiders of the Lost Arc" of what the arc can do, as scientific fact.

...What the Hell is the Ark of the Covenent? Aside from the thing in Halo?
Watch the first Indiana Jones movie. Raiders of the lost Ark.

It's the thing that melts the nazis at the end?
Awesome. I could use one of those.
I have one. However, it only becomes active after the consumption of bad Mexican food.....
All that is necessary for the triumph of good is that evil men do nothing.
I have once seen a mention, that some university guys studied the Ark description in old texts. They rebuilded the design, creating in result an electric capacitor, capable of containing a voltage high enough to kill a human. According to the texts, the poles to carry the Ark might have in the same time a function to short-circuit it, so it could be safely carried around. Also, on the top, there was something, called "cherubs" (or similarly). These things looked like two conic objects, placed next to each other. There is a principle of a loudspeaker, with two coils, placed in this way, and sound comes from between them, so the "cherubs" could maybe actually produce a sound. The ark of covenant could be a communication device. To communicate with who? With God, of course, who practices cultural segregation, knows principles of immunity and bacteriology, and leads the way in physical presence.
Beings who deserve worship don't demand it. Beings who demand worship don't deserve it.
What you're referencing is somebody taking the design and applying modern engineering to it and creating something completely different. We do not have so technical a design to create anything from them. The Ark is a representation of Jewish creativity - it was never a real artifact.

So it's a metaphysical megaphone?
Boo. I like the Nazi-microwaver explaination better.
