So why are many people stupid? And why should we forgive them?

25% of Americans believe the sun goes around the earth (NSF poll in 2001).

60% of Americans believe in ESP.

Former American Idol singer Kellie Pickler thinks Europe is a country (on Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader).

And there are many more examples!!!

Why does rampant stupidity exist in the USA? Why should we hold back in calling people stupid? Why is Kellie Pickler (or George Bush) regarded as charming and cute? Why should we let them get away with it? Kill me now!!! Take a 44 magnum and blow my fucking brains out if I have to listen to another blond fuck tell the public that Europe is a country!!!! Oh why do such people reproduce?!?!? Please fuck all you want to (since you're probably not smart at doing anything else) but don't spread your fucking seed into the next generation!!!! Tell me why we shouldn't sterilize these dumb fucks??? Oh you shit-filled, Christ-loving, vacuous, empty-headed, fucktard southern belles and bastards!!!!! If shock therapy boosts IQ, I'd shove cattle prods up your asses and then see if you can add two numbers!!!!!! I want to pull my eyes out, soak my head in a bucket of lye, jump off a cliff and wallow in my pool of blood and vomit rather than hear you speak!!!!!!

I'm post-call and that rant felt good.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone.

You remember how many

You remember how many American high school students can't find the US on a map? What was the percentage of Americans who believe in evolution vs the percentage that believe in Creationism? George W Bush was elected as president. Twice. Look at how little the average American understands science (see some of the posters on this site.) When there was a blackout a few years back the power company employees mentioned 2 incredibly stupid questions they heard a few times - "how will I know when my power comes back on?" and "If there's no power how do the cars have headlights on?" Even knowledge of a much closer country is terrible - I've heard Canadians say they were asked by Americans if they lived in an igloo or if they ate moosemeat sandwiches every day. Look at the idiots that point to a particularly cold day in the winter as "proving" global warming not true. Yeah, the stupidity in this country appals me, but we do have some very intelligent people.

My apologies if I have offended rationalists living in the South or for that matter any intelligent Southerner. I was indeed selecting those of Southern heritage (eg. GW Bush) and all those who are extremely devout in the bible belt in an attempt to generalize a phenomenon prevalent among the American public. But not to imply that stupidity only exists there. I could have used a similar motif by exploiting religious fundamentalists living in North Dakota followed by a "yaw" and then segue to a Fargo-esk wood-chipper rant instead of the cattle prod. Yet, this would in no way imply that idiots only live in the North. Similarly, I was not trying to stereotype the South as the beacon of stupidity and I'm fully aware of the many intellects who reside there (eg. Steven Weinberg) as well as the multitudes of half-wits everywhere else. I'm sorry if my rant was taken that way as it was not my intention.

Hey! I had a moosemeat sandwich on Monday. I smoked a moose roast this past weekend. It was damned good.

A friend of mine drove a tourbus in Alaska. She was asked such probing questions as:

While picking up the tourists from the cruise ship, standing on the dock: "How far above sea level are we?"

While looking at Denali: "How much does all that snow weigh?" (Which isn't stupid, just ridiculous, I guess.)

Then there's, "Do you take American money?"

Or at a postoffice, after the clerk handed them some American flag stamps: "Oh, I'll need Alaskan stamps for these. I'm putting them in the mail right here."

Or just as you said, Matt: "Where are the igloos?"

Or while taking a tour of the pipeline, after a talk about the use of heat radiators to protect the permafrost: "So, how did they install the permafrost?"

And so on.

People ain't bright.

Stupid is as Stupid does...

If it were not for human stupidity, I'd be out of a job... (Autopsy Assistant)

This Week...

A woman who recieved her residential school pay off, over $27,000... she put it ALL up her arm in 2 weeks time, she ended up on my slab when one of her good friends stomped on her belly as she was laying passed out on the floor.

A gorgeous little 20 yo girl, drunk and walking down the road with her friends decided to play 'chicken' with the passing cars and trucks... she won. (three months earlier, her aunt, similarly intoxicated, thought it would be ok to sit in the middle of the highway...)

Two guys, a couple of days apart, decided it would be agood idea to try and run their snowmobiles across an open stretch of water...

On this list, when someone is being an idiot, I think it's morally wrong NOT to point out to them how stupid they truely are.

It never ceases to amaze me

It never ceases to amaze me how I can take one concept and make it fit in several different topics.  Over in the Science Fiction debate thread, I mentioned that humans like to think that they're breaking free from their instincts, but they're not.

The vast majority of people are stupid because our genes don't care if we're smart or not.  I'm using smart and stupid colloquially here.  Sure, our genes want us to be able to have abstract thoughts and be able to deal with complex cultural interactions, etc... but they don't really give a damn if we can summon the intellectual fortitude to recycle aluminum cans or vote for whoever runs against the Republican candidate.

If you think about it, there are many more logical ways to do things than what humans do.  We're just here for the genes, after all.  As long as they're reproducing themselves effectively, we'll continue to be pretty stupid as a species.

The problem is culture, being smart isn't seen as socially rewarding but general ignorence and subservience to religion and patriotism is. I don't think the problem can be solved by stopping these people reproducing, culture isn't transmitted genetically. Sure some dumbfucks are dumbfucks because of genetics, but I'd suggest the problem in America isn't a rampant 'stupid gene' spreading through the gene pool, but a rampant set of 'stupid memes'. I'd also assume that the general genetic make up of the American population isn't that significantly enough different from anywhere else for there to be such a vast difference in natural intellect.

I, unlike many people my age in the UK, despise American culture which generally speaking for men revolves around strength, power, watery piss-beer and lack of brains and for women revolves around fashion and bimboism. It's very easy to fall in and be a sheep like everyone else, even if you've actually got brains. The normal thing to do is usually accepted as common sense, and if the normal thing is stupidity. It's why clever people are so often portrayed as semi-autistic dorks or geeks with no social skills. Take the sitcom 'The Big Bang Theory' for example. Sure I know some people like this, and its a realistic stereotype of some clever people, but it really promotes this idea that being a clever person is something for a unique minority that suffer a social skills deficiency. The cure has to be cultural, and has to do with spreading an alternative view of reality.

She's not necessarily stupid. She's uneducated. There's a difference. It probably has far more to do with our horrible education system rather than "dumb" genes. I'd say we should make all these people go back to school until they can answer basic questions like whether or not the sun orbits the Earth but, until we fix our schools, that won't do much good.

This is virtually certain.  While there are a small percentage of people who can genuinely comprehend significantly more concepts than the average human, a person of normal intelligence, if taught well, can easily absorb a great deal of information about the world, including the location of their own state on a map.

We won't be able to fix our schools until we fix the societal problems that made our schools bad in the first place.  I'm not going to try to say what these are.  (Talk about derailing a thread!)

True about the education

True about the education system. I had teachers that taught things I later learned were false - within the subject they taught. Unfortunately, unlike college professors the emphasis on teacher degrees is on "teaching techniques" instead of knowing the subject matter. When they have subs it's even worse - I remember having substitute teachers that could barely speak English, there was an older man who said he was a Vietnam veteran and Vietnam was "fun" - he also was very strange and likely mentally ill. Basically at least in PA all you need is a certificate and you can literally substitute teach any subject, including one you know nothing about. I was out sick when it happened in Jr High, but it was during history of the different religions the Math teacher (who was a goof himself) subbed for the History teacher, and spent the entire period speaking about how wonderful Christianity is and how great it was to be a Christian (oh if I had been there and knew what I knew now - can you say lawsuit? Hello FFRF and ACLU!) Imagine how bad it would be if Christians had their way and their idiotic view of science was taught everywhere - science is already not a good subject in general in the US. I personally feel the Average Americans knowledge and understanding of science is on the lower end of what an elementary school student's should be. Who knows what it will take - after the Scopes Monkey trial in the 1920s things were kind of the same, until the Russians launched Sputnik and our government figured out it might be a good idea to teach our students science that at least met 19th century standards. Christianity has been an utter disaster towards the understanding of science for nearly 2 millenia now.

Well really it depended on where he was stationed in Vietnam during the war and what his role was while he was there.  I've met people that served in Iraq in the past couple of years and said it was a great experience.  Others are seriously fucked up over the ordeal.  It's subjective to what happened to them on a case by case basis with several variables at play.

Hmmm...well that's an extremely complicated thing to go into.  However, from what I have learned it seemed that WWII was a much larger factor in the US about the importance of science than the Sputnik launch.  Hell, America and Russia scrambled over German scientists like mad at the end of the war.

As our people started analyzing German technology that we captured after Nazi Germany fell many of them were absolutely horrified and chilled to the bone with how technologically advanced they were with their experimental war hardware they were on the brink of deploying.

I find it somewhat amusing that the "Space Race" between the USSR and the USA was really a race between German scientists that each country had plundered from Germany at the end of the European theatre of WWII.

I think this so often it

I think this so often it comes down to how much value your culture places on the intellect (insert photo of president here).

Willfully stupid people are elevated to celebrity...just turn on the TV.  If we wanted genuine education and mental growth we'd embrace reality instead of trying to drown ourselves in anything & everything that might help us forget it.

At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity:  idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political ideas.

It's the belief that science is a fraud and all that evidence about the age of things and outer space is a lie. Science, apparently in the minds of some, was developed for the sole purpose of proving God does not exist. I have a theist friend whom I tried to get to watch a show about the Book of Revelations on the History Channel. I found the show interesting because it talked about the historical and archeological evidence they've found that helps to interpret what the story was really about. He's so freaked out about the End being near (because the war on Iraq is proof that the Book of Revelations is coming true, right? Sticking out tongue ) that I thought it might calm his nerves to learn that the story was more likely about the war between the Romans and the Christians at that time. But he didn't want to watch it because he believes that their whole motive for making shows like that is to disprove the Bible and sway him from his beliefs. I actually thought the show was pretty objective in its discussion of the evidence, but he didn't believe it. But of course he wouldn't believe an atheist's opinion of science!

To a certain degree, I agree with your argument that gender stereotypes are culturally endorsed (ie. Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, etc.) and the xenophobic tendencies towards people who show intellect (ie. the dork or nerd carricatures). But these cultural stereotypes are not exclusive to the USA. For example, in India and to a certain extent in the UK, Bollywood stars are extremely popular and contribute to similar gender stereotypes. Every girl wants to be sexy like Ashwairya Rai and every boy wants to be macho like Shah Rukh Khan. But inspite of this, I don't see any appreciable cognitive decline among the masses. In fact, in Southeast Asia and in Europe, more and more individuals choose professions which require rigorous (often brutal) training in the maths and sciences and only a select few get jobs in those respective fields (eg. IT industry) based on high standards. It is quite unlikely that those folks will believe the earth is flat. So why is the US different?

The way I see it, there are 2 reasons. First, math and science are not valued in American society at all cultural levels most likely because people find those subjects hard. For example, you don't have to take calculus or geometry in high school. Transcendental numbers such as pi are reduced from 3.14159 26535....etc to 3 to make life simpler for students. Second, American culture has evolved to celebrate mediocrity and forgive those who lag behind. Everyone deserves a gold star. In the past, if a high school student said that the sun revolves around the earth, he/she would be publicly humiliated. In our PC laden culture, we don't want to lower an individual's self-esteem. We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by pointing out that he/she has perpetual brain farts. Stupidity prevails in this milieu. And this is manifestly worse as you rightfully pointed out when the masses are blindly patriotic along with unquestioning obedience to religious doctrine. I wouldn't want these folks to reproduce to prevent them from spreading this meme (not their genes) to their children. And please, they should never be allowed into public office.

It's amazing that any able-minded American can't find the United States on a map.  I mean, if they struggle with physical location, how much do they struggle with the complexities of society and culture within those boundaries?

in my high school there were

in my high school there were multiple routes in which you could take for all of your subjects. in math and science there were either applied, Normal, and advanced. I was in the normal for both. But i never had to do Calc due to the fact that only the people in the advance lane were the only ones who had to do it... I basically stopped at geometry after 2 years of ALgebra in which i really only needed one year. Science was taught only by science teachers if one teacher was sick and there was no subs that knew how to teach science one of the other science teachers would take our class into there's for the day to teach that way we never lost anything. i really and truthfully feel that the reason our country is the way it is is because they let students off so easy with the normal subjects. There were other paths a student here could take where they only had to take the 4 main subjects in the morning/afternoon and the rest of the day they would be at the career center where they would learn a trade be it welding, automotive, or whatever. i can understand if a student was doing something like that if they wanted to take the easy way out, but that still their choice.
