Hypodermic Needle Urban Myth?
Someone at work today says she refuses to go to the movies anymore, ever since there was allegedly some sick fuck a few years back that hid hypodermic needles with HIV positive plasma in them in movie theatre seat cushions, and people wound-up sitting on them and getting AIDS. I'm pretty sure I recall hearing the same thing some time ago from someone/somewhere.
Anyone else heard of this one? Is there some truth behind it?
I'm pretty sure it's not possible for a virus to survive in blood that is just left someplace for a few hours, is it?

How long does HIV survive in a syringe ? Long enough to get you, so be careful of theaters .... a crazy wants to hurt you .... so just stay home and lock the doors ....

As a liquid in a syringe, it could survive for a while, depending on conditions. Dried in a needle, the risk is very low. Hepatitis B does survive quite well dried, but you can get vaccinated for that (I would recommend it, it is much more highly transmissible than HIV, and much more common in most countries).
This is just personal opinion, but if I got stuck I would let it bleed a bit then wash out the wound to minimize risk of infection (same as i would for toxin or if the wound was dirty), but don't go and do something stupid like cut the wound open.
Of course risk infection depends a lot on the viral load. Does the blood even come from a HIV positive person? Were they being treated? The viral load might be so low that the risk is minimal.

This reminds me of why I don't pump gas, someone once stuck a needle in a gas pump, and from that day forward I decided to walk everywhere. It takes longer, but now I can have unprotected sex without risk of getting HIV.
