Croatia

I've just come back from a holiday to Croatia.

This was a really beautiful place, and if you don't mind some cheeky little lizards running around your feet every now and then, then I'd highly recommend visiting this friendly and affordable country with it's Soviet, ancient Roman and general Italian influences.

Sunset view from our balcony

Same view during the day

I recommend Vodka Moskva as an affordable alternative to Vodka and nail polish remover.

Just looking from the end of the main drag back over the harbour.  The tallest building you see is a good solid million year old cathedral of some kind.

Here's a clock tower

I was absolutely amazed that people were still using these old buildings.  Not only do they put shoe shops and ice cream stalls in these, but people still live in them.  These walls are hundreds, maybe even approaching a thousand years old, and people are still hanging up their washing to dry:

The water was absolutely amazingly clear.... but too cold for comfortable swimming!

I'd love to go to Croatia.

I'd love to go to Croatia. Plus one of my favorite kick boxers ( Mirko Filipovic ) is from there.

I'd also like to be a multi-millionaire and have a 12" penis but the chances of these events occurring are about as likely.

Indeed... Travel

Indeed...

Travel opportunities is one of the main reasons I originally moved to the UK.  There are so many budget airlines flying into Europe, a place where the cost of living is *usually* considerably lower than living in the UK.  (when I consider the exceptions, I'm looking at you, Switzerland).

Easyjet just started flying to Split in Croatia, and had some great deals.  £250 for 1 week for flights and accomodation for 2 people.  Admittedly we were supposedly very lucky with the weather for this time of year, but all I wanted out of this holiday was somewhere I hadn't been before to chill out.  I could have done this in the Croatian apartment and the closest pub, but we happened to luck out with unusually clear skies, based on the last couple of years summers.  I couldn't really lose Smiling

Sounds cool but I live in

Sounds cool but I live in Texas...much longer distance from here to Croatia and, presumably, much more expensive.  Maybe someday, though.

Absolutely.  If you have similar motivations to me though, i.e wanting to see Europe, then, if you possibly can, do try to live and work in the UK for a while.  You speak the same language (better than some over here!) and if you keep an eye out for deals, then there are some serious bargains to be had.  Some of these budget airlines have tickets for £1 (plus airport tax of... say £10) to head into some very desirable places.

I can (I think) appreciate your position.  I am from New Zealand, and the only affordable place to travel to from there is.... New Zealand.  Or Australia for them new-fangled rich folk.  But the Visas are available, the pound is earnable, continental Europe is open for exploration.

Incidentally... I had a friend recently live and work in Texas.  He said that gun use and abuse was pretty rampant there, and that he could hardly walk 3 steps before somebody would try to exorcise him, is it really that bad?

Well yes, gun use (

Well yes, gun use ( gun collecting, target shooting, etc ) is rampant but does not draw the attention of the authorities as these various activities constitute lawful behavior.

Guns are used in the commission of crimes as well ( a negative ), they are used in self defense situations, too ( a positive )  and just the other day it was reported that a criminal in my city who robbed a defenseless woman who was operating a doughnut shop was shot and killed by her neighbor who came to her rescue.

I am not aware of any exorcisms being performed publicly or even privately but I do live in the middle of "Jesus Land"  so anything is possible I suppose.  Does your friend speak with a foreign accent ?  Perhaps the religious do-gooders mistook that as a sign of "demon possession"
