Former lurker, first time poster here

Hi guys...

I have been lurking here for a little while and finally decided to join in. I am a New England transplant now living in North Central Florida outside of Ocala...it is VERY Christian here, and a tough place to be an atheist. I feel like a one-woman army around here...when my voice goes hoarse from debating Christians, I have to resort to eye-rolling, and I have sprained my eyeballs several times from rolling them so much. I have been living here for about 8 years and have made only one friend...finding rational, freethinking individuals in this area has proven to be near impossible, and there aren't any atheist groups that meet within a reasonable radius of my home either. I'm on a friggen island here!

So, here I am. Glad I finally joined. Hopefully I will have something to contribute once in awhile.

-Kathie

Where in CT are you from? I spent my first 18 years there - born in New Haven and raised on the shoreline. Now transplanted in Wyoming.

Welcome!

Ah yes, the lovely 395

Ah yes, the lovely 395 corridor. I drove it often when I lived in Boston and would visit CT.

I'm a little late to the welcome wagon but hi. ::waves::

you should really consider starting a meetup yourself.  i know you have to pay but it's only around $13 a month and if it doesn't work out you can always cancel.  many of the groups in this area use meetup and everyone i personally know more than a handful of group organizers on there that have had good results with the site.  it might seem like only a few people are signed up now but when there is an actual group they seem to come.  best of luck.

Hi Shelley...I have considered starting a meetup, but I'm sort of a hermit, a little bit anti-social, and probably not the best type of person to start one of these groups. I love the idea of going to group meetings, and meeting like-minded people, but as far as heading up a group...I dunno, just the thought of it gives me a little bit of anxiety.

Whats there to be anxious about?  If the gorup fails its becuase you suck as a leader . . . I'll just be quiet for a moment.  As you were people.

You know, I'd just like to

You know, I'd just like to point out that this is definitely one of the longest, if not the longest, intro threads I've seen.  It's almost like you had been reading all the posts about atheists, hot women, high maintenance, and such, and decided to prove several points just by saying hi.

In any case, I think this thread has been damn entertaining.  There's nothing like a bunch of internet geeks lining up to make friends with the new atheist girl.

Maybe you and Greek Goddess can have some kind of internet cage match...

I was thinking about how long this intro thread was getting too.  We need to kick over another hornet's nest of theists.

Cage match? I am a mixed martial arts fan, but I think she's on my team isn't she? Would be better to pit me against a theist, or better yet, she and I could do tag-team against a couple of theists...we mustn't fight amongst ourselves.

*waves hi to Greek Godess* if she's reading this.

Living

I was in Ft. Walton Beach for a short time in the 70's.  That's the furtherest SE I got.  I might be heading for the other coast later this year in a round about the country road trip, but wait a minute, the price of gas-o-line, I might not be able back out of the driveway.  That is so sad.  A road trip would be so much fun.

Besides . . . she has a weak ground game and can't escape a rear naked choke.

I love MMA also, but when it comes down to it I prefer watching contests of purely striking skills ( like  K 1 )......oh, by the way, welcome to the forums

Thanks for the welcome. I like the variety in MMA, some fighters are primarily stand-up, while others are grapplers, wrestlers etc. IMO the most entertaining fighters to watch are the guys that are good in all departments...the well-rounded fighters.

It is good for one on one battles but not terribly great for multiple opponents.  That last thing you want to do when taking on multple attackers is go to the ground.  You should learn some Muay Thai (or basic kickboxing which borrows heavily from Muay Thai) as well to balance yourself out.

Muay Thai is an awesome striking art ( my favorite ) but when it comes to multiple attackers I prefer to rely upon a hand gun ( I know, it's not very noble but it is an effective countermeasure. )
