Hello RRS
Hello All,
I am Wonko and this is my first thread.
I have little spare time in my life but I've really enjoyed reading the forums over the past year or so. There are so many excellent, highly knowledgeable writers here and it is always apprecie' to have my thoughts provoked.
I had a traditional Southern Baptist upbringing... three times a week, vacation bible school, etc and didn't start to question things until about the age of eight or nine.
By the time I was fourteen, the entire religious scope was in my rear view mirror and I've never really looked back. I did well in high school and college but decided against the Ph.D. pursuit and ended up in radio broadcasting. I was a morning jock and program director for a midwest U.S. radio station for about 5 years but there was just no money in it and worse than that I was becoming increasingly disatisfied with so many things in the industry. No further chapter and verse.
I decided to test out for a Firefighter position that was opening up and after all the written, physical agility, oral interview and lie detector exams, I ended up at the top of the list out of 307 candidates. It's where I've been now for @16 years.
Far as relationships...I am hetero but not woman 'crazy'. Guess I mean I don't have to constantly have a significant other in my life. Been married a couple times, the last was to a Christian (details of which I posted on another RRS thread so I won't repeat it here). Not seeing anyone at the moment.
Some things to know about me... I am a lazy in my typing so there will be plenty of times when I will typo, misplace quote marks, use improper phrasing and or English, etc. and I may occasionally drop a regional expression or midwestern slang by accident. Heehehe
Also, I am moderately familiar with many science terms and have basic understanding of philosophy, quantum mechanics, atomic theory, gravitational laws and the like (even tho I was dreadful in some math, like Calculus)
Much of my learning comes from a love of science and books, as well as my schooling but also from the fact that when I was little my father was a University professor in both Organic Chemistry and some other class called Molecular ____somethingoranother Can't recall the name at the moment. Anyway I often got to sit in during the lectures, so long as I could keep quiet. Learnt by osmosis!
I have a female Cavalier pup named Galaxy...but for short I just call her (my) Gal. I have a great love for animals and will defend ice hockey to be the greatest sport in the history of the planet. OK well couldn't find a puck smiley so
I also have a strong love for many types of music and admit to a somewhat fanatical admiration for Pat Metheny.
And yes,I am an Atheist, strong in some areas, not so much in others.
It's a cool website and great forums. I am in the need to know.
BTW, google wonko the magic elf, to get the whole lowdown. I love that short story!

Molecular biology?
Molecular geometry (although that itself wouldn't be a class per se. That would be under structural chemistry).
I can't actually think of any other fields that begin with molecular that are broad enough to be in classes. It sounds likely that if he taught organic chemistry and molecular "something" that "something" was probably biology.
"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. It is preposterous to assert that the process of systematic scientific reasoning arbitrarily excludes “non-physical explanations” because the very notion of “non-physical explanation” is contradictory.

Books about atheism
Hi. I'm new, too.
Hey man...welcome!
Welcome fellow newb!
perhaps molecular physics, pharmacology, ecology? (I guess those fall under the biology and geometry systems?) then again you're the expert here and my knowledge of scientific matters is rudimentary compared to yours.
anyway, welcome Wonko. I've been here for just over a year myself, but I'm more of a lurker, absorbing all the information I come across. watch out for threads like what faith you as those will leave you with a completely numb mind after reading right through them because of theists like mephibosheth (I followed that thread since its train wreck of a start, and it was a wreck that just kept on going)

Atheism Books.
Same here. Every Sunday morning, evening, and Wednesday night. And the bible schools...did they make everyone cry the last night like they did at mine?
I wonder if thats only Baptist church camps that mess with people like that.
Welcome to the forums, Wonko!
"I am an atheist, thank God." -Oriana Fallaci
Nope...I was forced to be Methodist. It made me cry, too.
Welcome, Wonko. Thanks again for the assist on another post. I think a lot of us were southern baptist coming up which makes me wonder just what percentage of atheists were s.b. Might be a good subject for a thread if it hasn't already been done.

Your god's silence speaks loud and clear
I heard once that the vast majority of non-denom preachers are ordained Southern Baptist preachers. I'm not sure if that's true though.
"I am an atheist, thank God." -Oriana Fallaci
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
To answer...
Yes, deludedgod, think it was Molecular Biology, but seems like the entire class name was longer (more syllables) than that. Just can't recall, twas long ago in a galaxy....
Watcher, yes, most kids were crying and on their knees the entire last night. I don't remember crying myself but I'm certain I had a horror filled expression on my face.
Welcome to the forums!
Where in the Midwest are you from/live? Greetings from Ames, Iowa.
I live and work in what is commonly called Southern Illinois.
Definitely part of the "belt".
Welcome to the forums! Have fun

Wellcome Fellow Atheist, are there many Atheist/Agnostics in your neck of the woods. And I was a huge Flyers fan,saw them win the cup in 1974,when tickets cost $4.50 per game.Joined the fan club, went to Montreal in 77 ,too watch the Canadians Ken Dryden go up against Bernie Parent,Yes a Great Sport to play.
Signature ? How ?
Hey Ken,
Ahhhh yes.... the Broadstreet Bullies as they were known.
Reg Leach, Bobby Clarke, Dave Schultz, Rick MacLeish and of course, Bernie
I started watching hockey at very early age and '74 was one of the first years.
Didn't they pummel the Sabres and the famed 'French Connection line' that year?
By the way, hardly any Atheists 'round my area. Unless they're in hiding.
Yep I think you're right with "the French Connection Line",but I'm not sure about the Sabres.
