Expelled: The Encapsulation

Opening: Show pictures of Nazi Germany / the Berlin Wall.

Part 1: Introduce the 'Expelled', tell their sob story, engage in Michael Moore-ish immaturity by splicing-in unrelated video clips to try and reinforce a point.

Part 2: Introduce Discovery Institute 'scientists', explain why Intelligent Design is not simply a rebranding of creationism, explain why the scientific community, academia, the press and the judicial system are not to be trusted (because of the influence exerted by 'evolutionists' and 'Darwinists').

Part 3: Explain why Creationism is the only avenue to moral standards, and why Creationism and ID are related / more or less the same idea. See: internal inconsistency with points made in Part 2.

Part 4: Explain why Science = Eugenics, and why Eugenics = Holocaust. See: total ignorance of history (one of the apologists Stein interviewed claimed that, in his opinion, Adolf Hitler was, 'Not insane,' but most definately, 'TEH EVIL!')

Part 5: Quote-mine Darwin, imply that Darwin is a religious figure in the scientific community, interview Dr. Dawkins. Half of what dawkins says in the interview is muted-out, naturally - so the 'interview' is more or less just a form of vocal quote-mining.

The documentary felt very 'Michael Moore'. Light on substance, but entertaining to a layman audience with fairly good editing work and cinematography. The theatre I was in was hardly full, but every person in it aside from myself clearly lapped-up everything fed to them. It made me feel more than a little uneasy (hopefully it was just a matter of the choir being preached to).

Most amusingly to me, while the film constantly mentions that there is 'so much evidence' for the ID arguments, none of this evidence is even mentioned. Not even irreductible complexity is wheeled out of the closet (I'd imagine because it's been kicked to the curb so many times already that they know that using it as evidence is a good way to be refuted. Laughing out loud). Most frustrating to me was the way that Stein simply slipped-in the words 'evolutionist' and 'Darwinist' relatively slyly.

Stein also played the 'small, victimized guy' card a lot, which had me shaking my head. I guess an overwhelming majority in favor of christianity still remains dwarfed by the nefarious powers of Big Science and it's terrible Machine! Sticking out tongue

It wasn't all bad. Hearing Dennet, Dawkins, Myers and other scientists speak is always a pleasure, even if their words are being twisted. There was also a really cool 3-D simulation of cellular-level activity. I don't know how accurate it is, of course, but I wish I knew where I could see it in full.

Erm. I don't understand a lot of the nomenclature DG uses in that article. I don't suppose someone could do a voiceover for it and explain some of the bits?

The protein dude hauling the big blue wad of doom is awesome.

I was reading something on RD.net that said apparently they yoinked that video without permission from a university project and used it for their own agenda (but removed the original audio) and are possibly getting in deep shit for it.

I read it a while ago, so I don't know the details or how all of that has been unfolding.

A place common to all will be maintained by none. A religion common to all is perhaps not much different.

Quote:That kinesin molecule

Quote:

That kinesin molecule is illustrated showing a stately march, step by step, straight down the microtubule. Observations of kinesin show it's more complex, jittering back and forth and advancing stochastically

BOO! Science sux!

The kinesins were cooler when I thought they marched along as shown in the animation. Sad
