Professional Boxers and Jesus

When I was watching a boxing marathon on ESPN2 ,for the last two days,it got me wondering, just when did all of this nonsense start to happen.First off lets start with the oldies, like Jack Dempsey,Jack Johnson, etc...up to Joe Lewis and Rockey Marciano.Back then the only one that the fighter ever thanked was his trainer, and he would also thank the rest of the "PEOPLE" in his corner, like the cut man and others that he counted on. Now, with the fighters all you ever hear is  "I want to thank Jesus my lord and savior etc." A story that I heard about George Forman after he won the title went something like this; Gill Clancy -his trainer said to him in the locker room after the fight "Hey George tell me something, why didn't you mention me when you were out there thanking Jesus, after all,I'm the one who wakes up early every day to make sure that you do your road work, and I'm the one who makes sure that you eat healthy, and get you sparring partners etc... but when you won that belt you've seemed to have forgotten my name...why.

I mentioned this on the show

I mentioned this on the show a few years ago, but when the Steelers won the SuperBowl in 2006, due in part to missed field goals by Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt, this was the reply:

"Shortly after the loss, Colts kicker/goat Mike Vanderjagt explained how he felt by saying he was in extreme disbelief. "From the [Troy] Polamalu interception reversal to Jerome's [Bettis] fumble, everything seemed to be lined up in our favor. I guess the lord forgot about the football team," he said."

At least a few athletes have the balls to blame God, I guess, lol.

The color Yellow is bright

The color Yellow is bright and fun, and to be yellow is often a wise coward.

That was the conference finals. The Stealers and Colts are both AFC teams. It was the Seahawks (Peace be upon them.) that the Stealers had help in defeating. Apparently God wears black and white stripes.

Do'h.

Indeed, I made an inebriated mistake there, though the quote is accurate.

The Steelers won the Bowl that year, AFTER winning that particular game by the grace of the football gods, who do indeed wear Black and twirl yellow towels.

"Won" is one way of putting it. Even ABC's coverage of the game favored the Stealers.

They won fair and square. SI

They won fair and square. SI had an article explaining that a couple weeks later due to the conspiracy theorists. Now you want to see refree bias, watch the Patriots. THEY get all the calls in their favor.

Damn wrong sir. All of the stats leading into game showed that the Hawk's were the better team. All of the stats during the game showed that the Hawk's were dominating the game. The only stats in the Stealer's favor were penalties and the final score. I've heard from a lot of people with no dog in the race (Including friends who just wanted to grill dead animals more than they wanted to watch the game.), and some with officiating experience that those penalties had timing that was suspicious at best. Then there's the touchdown that wasn't. Rothlisberger's hand never broke the plane. I've heard the argument that when that happens you have to overcome it and the Seahawk's didn't. Admit it though, at some point you just call bullshit on the whole thing and give up. The Hawk's walked in there and owned the Stealer's until the ref's stepped in.

SI is practically alone in the opinion that it was won "fair and square". There was a ton of media coverage calling it dirty. Honestly, I doubt SI would come down hard on the NFL anyways. Their access to players and coaches sells millions of magazines every year. I doubt they'd fuck it up by calling the NFL out on the carpet and embarrassing them by claiming the pinnacle of the season was fixed.

Not on that day. The Hawk's played a shitty game in the Bowl, by all accounts. The simple fact of the matter is, the Hawk's had better stats going in, because the Hawk's play in a shitty division, in the shittier conference, against shitty teams.

The Steelers on the other hand have one of the toughest divisions there is.

Did the Steelers get a few breaks? Maybe.

Did the Hawks play a game that should have won? Certainly not.

Dammit. I can't find the stats for the game, but the Hawk's had better numbers against your tougher team in yardage, time of possession, and turnovers. The Stealer's simply had the benefit of weak penalties called on critical plays such as the holding call on Locklear despite the fact that the guy he was holding was way offsides, negating a huge reception that would have put the Hawk's within scoring distance. They got robbed.

But apparently not in the categories that actually matter, like touchdowns and field goals. Every week in the NFL teams with better stats lose. It's hardly new. Hundreds of yards mean fuck all if the ball doesn't cross the goal line.

True. Even Ben Roethlisberger knows that. Maybe that's why even he didn't think he scored that touchdown.
