The South Will Rise Again.

I wonder if this is what they had in mind. I checked out some of the forum comments, and of course some people had to trot out the tired logic that if we would just resist one our natural and most overwhelming urges we wouldn't need to educate people about sex. If not for the slavery thing we should have let them secede.

HIV on the rise at an alarming rate in the South ?

I guess what bothers me most is how the article blames the huge rise on a "lack of funding" alone and assigns little to no blame on archaic Abstinence methods.

There's a church (or 3) on every block in the South who propagate this ignorance & don't pay a cent on taxes.

Here's an article from the NY Times on how the South leads the rest of the country in a # of unfavorable statistics & how the North pays a far greater portion of taxes than their Bible Belt counterparts.

Quote:
"As a group, red states pay considerably less in taxes than the federal government spends within their borders; blue states pay considerably more. Over all, blue America subsidizes red America to the tune of $90 billion or so each year".

what really irritates me about this is that there's medical insurance for viagra and other male sexual enhancers, but none for birth control  or std prevention. Nice, huh? no funding for condoms or women's birth control meds, or sex ed, but plenty for tired old men to get their pricks up...

Not only that, but they cover fertility treatment rather than birth control. So they pay to increase reproduction but not reduce it in an already way overpopulated world.

I'm not sure how Delaware and Maryland qualify for being included, according to the report, as "southern states".

Maybe it helped make the numbers look better for whatever way they were trying to spin the story. Or maybe the CDC needs a general geography refresher.

They sure weren't.  Both voted to stay with the Union.  Virginia was the most northern state to secede.  Maryland and Delaware have a historic association as border states, as attested to by the unofficial motto of the City of Baltimore:  "Northern Charm, Southern Efficiency."

Yeah, sort of like how Hurricane Katrina was god's wrath on homosexuals...      I laughed when Jon Stewart pointed out that the typical "gay" neighborhoods of N.O. were the ones who sustained the least amount of damage during the storm.

I hate to send thread into a "dump on the south" thing.  There are many here who live in southern states.  What is upsetting is that the "majority" of the south seems as if they need to vote in political candidates who do not have their best interests in mind and simultaneously support a church culture that is even more power hungry/destructive ... and this voting bloc has an overall detrimental effect on the progress of the rest of the country.

Yep they will rise again but

Yep they will rise again but the south will be soo undereducated that they will not be able to figure out how to even group up into organized military militia's and while that is happening the North will be pushing out fence like crazy and we will be fencing in the south calling it a war zone and that Al-Queda is the driving force there so the rest of the country will just nod and agree!!!

Uh, folks... last time I checked, pregnancy was not a disease. ED and infertility (male and female) are. I'm all for birth control, but why should medical insurance pay for fixing something that is not broken to begin with, such as normally-functioning reproductive ability?

Because it's still a health issue. In many cases pregnancy may be even more unwanted than a disease. They should be forced to cover birth control and abortion by the government.

What you're missing is the onesided mentality of helping people to make babies while leaving those that wish to employ a little family planning out in the cold.

I take it you aren't aware of the issue of full term fetal material commonly referred to as moles. short definition is this is what babies would be if they had no brain or nervous system. and were carried full term.

there's also the problem of carrying  to term fetuses that ended up dying during pregnancy. stillbirth of rotting fetal material is a humane reason for abortions.

Most medical insurance covers vasectomies and tubal ligation. This reduces the cost to the insurance companies which is what its all about. My ex-wife and my ex-girlfriend both got birth control pills on prescription plans too, likely for the same reason to reduce cost to the insurance company.

The South is so intermixed with people from all over the US the values it once had are pretty much diluted. I have lived in Orlando for 17 years and sometimes there are more Northerners here than in New England. Actually Florida today is not really part of the South at all, it is part of Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, New York, Michigan and several Provinces of Canada. In my case I'm leaving and moving back to Denver where I came from originally.

The South seceded over states rights, they felt they had a right to decide slavery in each state as you said. The North maintained no state could secede and fought for that reason. Today we take the moral high ground when parts of countries wish to secede such as Chechnya from Russia though we won't allow it either. Texas has as much chance today of seceding from the US as Chechnya does from Russia for similiar reasons, oil.
