People should actually be

People should actually be protesting the mistreatment of hardons. Any woman who doesn't put out on a date should have hundreds of protestors on her lawn the next day.

My only complaint is this

My only complaint is this will ikely shift attention away from what I feel is their more pressing cause:

Warning people about the dangers of unDead Driving.

Quote:
"Natasha has just come up to the window from the courtyard and opened it wider so that the air may enter more freely into my room. I can see the bright green strip of grass beneath the wall, and the clear blue sky above the wall, and sunlight everywhere. Life is beautiful. Let the future generations cleanse it of all evil, oppression and violence, and enjoy it to the full."

People are so ignorant about

People are so ignorant about science it's pathetic. They actually think it's possible for these things to cause a black hole tha would destroy the Earth.

A few weeks ago I got drawn into a conversation about the LHC in a waiting room. A woman had started talking about the earth being devoured by a black hole created by the LHC and even got a little misty eyed from fear.

I tried my best to explain that even if the LHC did generate a super-dense ball of matter it wouldn't be a problem because "black hole gravity" is a function of mass and not some magical form of meta-gravity. No one seemed to be able to grasp that, "retorting" with things like "But not even light can escape a black hole".

Oi.

The strangest part of it all was that they seemed comforted when I got exasperated and said that the black hole would devour the world so quickly that no one would have the chance to notice.

I've seen horror movies and enjoyed myself.  Sometimes..  people just want to be scared, I guess.

I wonder if there's some strange instinct to fixate on the most dangerous thing we can find at any given moment, then, you know.. try to survive it...  leading to a behaviour of manufacturing things to fear...  maybe...

or, I suppose, it could be straight ignorance.

Probably a combination. Their ignorance plus the 'newsworthyness' of the black hole scare gives them something both distant and frightening to wring their hands about. This can be fun for the same reasons going to see a scary movie or going to a haunted-house ride is.

And then along comes this woman who goes and tries to take all the fun out of it by being realistic. It is possible they all chose to deny what i was saying because it wasn't nearly as interesting and being afraid. Plus the possibility that accepting what I was saying was right might make them feel foolish.
