Not just those who work on

Not just those who work on Sundays who get stoned, but those who violate any of the commandments up until the "thou shalt not kill" should be killed according to the bible.  Brilliant, isn't it?  Check it.

Organised religion is the ultimate form of blasphemy.

Because the bible is full of contradictions, making it easy for people to realize it couldn't possibly be true.

Amoron, welcome to the wonderful world of...ahem...

"biblical exegesis."

Back when I was still calling myself a believer, (though admittedly you wouldn't have known it from my Sunday morning behavior,) I was trying to explain to an atheist shipmate of mine why I believed that eternal life was at least a possibility for non-Christians.  In a nutshell, my dialogue partner replied by essentially accusing me of gerrymandering the Bible in order to make it say what I wanted it to say.

That ate at me for a while.  Pretty soon, two thoughts hit me:

   1. He was absolutely right; and

   2. As near as I could tell then (or even now,) this sort of eisigesis is...well...

standard operating procedure for theologians.  And why wouldn't it be?

Even then, I knew enough about the Bible to know that any reasonably

coherent set of thoughts ("theology&quotEye-wink that one could possibly base on the

Bible, could just as easily be refuted by simply choosing to pay attention to

a different set of verses.  Now that I think about it, this may have been a

more significant part of my journey towards atheism than I have been

         giving it credit for being.

Now you know why the Bible understood to be self-contradictory.  It *is* self-contradictory, and not just on this issue.  I forget the title of the thread, but Rook has put up an excellent--lengthy--list of Bible contradictions on this site.  It's well worth the search.  Or, if you're as lazy as me, simply type "Skeptic's Annotated Bible" into the search engine of your choice.

Nowadays, theology strikes me as being almost a game.  (Can *you* make a sex-positive theology by quoting the Bible?  I'll give you a hint; start with Genesis, chapter 2, and proceed from there immediately to the Song of Songs.  You see?  It's easy!  Just ignore anything that's inconvenient.  Or, for the truly advanced, you can even "incorporate" those verses "into your theology" by, say, a soft-focus approach to what they say, or by abstracting some meaning from them which is close-but-not-quite-close-enough.)

Have fun!

Conor

P.S.: The exact same thing can be done with Papal declarations, Conciliar documents, teachings of theologians, etc.

I believe it was Euthyphro

I believe it was Euthyphro who determined that God can do whatever he wants because he's totally sweet and awesome. In fact, he made whatever he happened to be at the time the definition of sweet awesomeness, thus becoming their sole perfect fulfillment.

Ah, yes...

...the old "He's-God-and-you're-not" defense.

And people actually wonder why atheists don't want to worship such a loving deity.

I just thought of something...

...feel free to throw it at your Christian acquaintances sometime.

Look at the first two verses of the Second Letter of "Paul" to Timothy:

1   Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise

        of life in Christ Jesus,

2   to Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father

        and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Observe carefully how--not just once, but twice, in this passage--"God" is carefully distinguished from "Christ Jesus."  What does this distinction mean?  Why, it's very simple: it means that, according to the New Testament, Jesus...

...is not God.

If you like, you can go on from there to 1 Tim 1:1, and prove that the NT also teaches that God, and not Jesus, is Savior.

Once again...have fun!

Hopefully you are not a slow learner like I am.  I'm still floating around in cyber space, can't quite figure out the different forums.  And I still want grammar check.  But hey, I have fun here.

Thou shalt not.....

The only way the commandments (Torah/OT and NT) work are if you are group specific, thou shalt not kill (another jew/christian) and there are rules which if you don't follow, you are commanded to kill the offender. So you cannot just kill out of jealousy or anger, however if you break the rule you get the punishment. If you read the bible you will see that the jews kill many people off and actually commit genocide, which in all cases breaks the thou shalt not kill. But really it's more like thou shalt not commit murder or kill another jew. It is the only way it works, and since it was directed towards those of the jewish faith, then it does work under that context. However the christians came in and well made the NT. Which tries to narrow down the commandment (after all they are gentiles) however again the commandement really only work under the context that the people following it are christians, however other of different faith/beliefs do not fall under those rules and there for are game.

((( Echoing Coner Wilson,

((( Echoing Coner Wilson, it's easy to also construct an atheistic or pantheistic Jesus similar to Buddha. The regulars here at RRS know my rap. It seems to confuse quit a few people. I do this in my attempt to destroy the hocus pocus dogmatic menace of, god of abraham and the "christian" jesus.  There are lots of atheist and pantheist freethinkers who do this. Reading eastern Jesus ideas and sites like "Atheist for Jesus" is really helpful to de-contructing the plague of traditional religion dogma.

To this cause, the late Alan Watts is a fav of mine, and the current  Neale Walch seems pretty good. They are on Youtube etc.

This is a bit interesting, and there is lots of stuff like this, demonstrating the silliness and danger of religion. Hey, create your own Jesus ! Create no idols of worship.

I think anyone claiming a religious label is a bit loony, but this is pretty interesting regarding that story Jesus invention, and stupid retarded christianity etc .... and hey, fuck many of you hindus, buddhists, etc too ..... any of you "idol" worshipers.

http://www.hinduism.co.za/jesus.htm

Thanks for posting here at RRS , and pass the "good word" on, "ATHEISM SAVES" .....   LOL

This was a message from god,  me, 100% equal to you .... fuck the dictionary god.

As other people have said, the bible is full of contradictions , but this is not actually a contratiction, since those laws apply only to believers, it most posible mean, thou shall not murder other people of the same faith. Here are two site that talk about the mistakes, contradictions and violence in the bible: www.evilbible.com/ and skepticsannotatedbible.com/

Welcome to the forums, enjoy your stay, and watch out for the ninjas.

The bible has contradictions

The bible has contradictions in it? No-one told me!!! Damn, I feel all disillusioned and shit! I'm gonna go write a Linkin Park song about scars that will not heal now.

Wish in one hand, shit in the other, see which one fills up first.
