Bush to pull 8000 troops

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/09/us.iraq.military/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. President George W. Bush is set to announce a plan to withdraw about 8,000 U.S. troops from Iraq by February and to beef up the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

Bush will say in a speech on Tuesday morning that improving conditions in Iraq will allow a "quiet surge" of American troops to Afghanistan, where there has been a resurgence of the Taliban and a growth in violence.

The troop cut -- smaller than many had expected due to a desire not to jeopardize recent security gains made in Iraq -- will mark one of Bush's final decisions on a war that has defined his presidency.

In a transcript of remarks given Monday to the news media and slated for delivery to the National Defense University in Washington, Bush says he is making the move based on a recommendation from top military officers, including Gen. David Petraeus, the highest-ranking U.S. military officer in Baghdad......

Right on schedule.  I hate to say it, but I predicted this almost four years ago, almost to the month.   It's a bit smaller than I thought it would be, but then again, things in Iraq are probably less stable than even the Rethuglicans anticipated...

Next up:  Cue the talking heads preparing the way for Rethuglican leaders to talk about a new, smarter approach to terror, based on what we've "learned" from Iraq.

But you guys HAVE learned so much from Iraq!

Take the lesson, for example, about how catastrophically effective roadside IEDs are at destroying enemy equipment and killing enemy soldiers...

...Oh, wait, no - my mistake. That's the other guys that have been learning those tricks, isn't it? Sticking out tongue

Ouch. That was harsh. TRUE, but harsh.

As evidenced by history, politicians learn nothing from war. However, the military does eventually.

Legion over phalanx, guerilla over conventional, etc.

Or the best lesson

LEARN YOUR FUCKING HISTORY!!! Not the Greeks, the Romans, the Turks, the mongols, Ottoman empire, or British empire have been able truly control this region of the world, only those from this part of the region have been able to control it, basically Arabs are really good at controlling other Arabs....outsiders are not and have to deal with uprisings and guerrilla tactics.

You simply cannot have another country shove the barrel of a gun down the throat of another country and demand democracy, if the people do not want it and fight for it then it will NEVER prosper. But hey, who needs history and actual past knowledge when you have billions of dollars if not trillions and an army willing to die (except you tell them lies about what they are going to confront and their mission objectives....WMD haha nice one there)

So hopefully Americans have learned something, oh and being patriot doesn't mean saying yes to the government on everything....it means standing up for what is good for your country, even if your government is wrong, or the majority is wrong.
