Priest charged with selling coke from campus rectory
A Catholic priest was charged this week with selling cocaine from his office and residence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, local news organizations report.
The Rev. Christopher Layden, 33, was arrested Wednesday after police found "about 3 grams of powder cocaine and items of drug paraphernalia" while executing a search warrant on the campus, according to The Pantagraph.
Layden pleaded not guilty to three charges, the paper says.
The News-Gazette reports an informant told police that he has used cocaine with the priest "40 to 50 times" since 2007. "First Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said in court Thursday that the UI police monitored a cocaine purchase by the informant from Layden on Sept. 4," the paper says.
Here's the campus police department's blotter entry about this case.
The Peoria Diocese says in a statement to the local ABC affiliate that it was "shocked and saddened" to learn of the priest's arrest. He has been suspended pending the outcome of the case, the statement says.
Although I do think the war on drugs is stupid, this did make me laugh a bit. Hope you enjoy it too.

Geez--why did I have to go to the college where a priest got arrested for child molestation (although I do believe it was a 17 year old)? Ironically, he was a young and relatively good-looking guy. Also head of the theology department and the seminary school, which subsequently had to close due to his arrest. *shrugs*

Well, at least priests are getting called out for their actions now in the United States. It's maddening everytime I read of some abusive priest hiding in Mexico, protected by the very villagers he is likely harming. Sounds like your school took responsibility and cleaned house. That's good to hear.

we need that kind of initiative here in slovakia too. these fucking assholes get away with everything. and you know what's the worst part? most slovaks are completely cynical about priests but they won't dare take any serious action against them. their attitude is sorta "enh, whattaya gonna do?" fuckin' irritates the shit out of me. string 'em all up by their goddamn collars!
"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

Oh to be a priest in the '80s, wouldn't that have been great.
Nah. I couldn't do it. I have a conscience. The guilt would bother me as I was snorting blow off of a pair of 17 year old breasts, while listening to her mom/dad's confessions of infidelity.
I'm not even going to tell you where we put her rosary.
