God is most certinaly NOT benevolent. please read.

How the fuck do people get off saying that the bible is a good source of moral fortitude!?

it astounds me how christians concider the bible to be an unrivaled source of human goodness. If they would actually READ the bible, they would see that many of the things that god expects us to do are morally WRONG in todays society. i will go into a few examples using scripture you can find yourself in the bible.

  1. We should beat out of line children with rods. Proverbs 13:24, 20:30, 23:13-14
  2. If they talk back, we should kill them. Leviticus 20:9
  3. Also see Deuteronomy 13:6, 8-15 for another example of gods timeless wisdom.
  4. God is vindictive, and vengeful. see Thessalonians 1:6-9
  5. God is not afraid to give up on us. (how kind.) see John 15:6
  6. God clearly expects us to keep slaves. Leviticus 25: 44-46
  7. God expects fathers to sell daughters into Sexual Slavery. see Exodus 21:7-11

In modern society, ALL of this is completely unacceptable. This in my opinion, proves that the bible was written by man WITHOUT THE INFLUENCE OF ANY KIND OF GOD. For if god WERE involved, being his omnipotent self, would have given logical and ethical scripture to follow for the entire existence of man.

what does everyone else think?

Theists will first dismiss

Theists will first dismiss everything from the OT.

They will then say you have taken everything else in the wrong context. It makes perfect sense if you understood it properly the way they do.

They may also say god created us he can do whatever the hell he wants with us.

Psalm 14:1 "the fool hath said in his heart there is a God"-From a 1763 misprinted edition of the bible

Argument from Sadism: Theist presents argument in a wall of text with no punctuation and wrong spelling. Atheist cannot read and is forced to concede.

In short: Bible-believing theists tend to be a bunch of wankers.

well....

it wont matter what they say. they cant back up their statements with any kind of evidence. its bullshit. we have our proof. wheres theirs?

number four i stated is from the new testament.

also, notice the fact that there is no place in the new testament that jesus objects to the practice of slavery. see Ephesians 6:5 and -1Timothy 6:1-4

Pardon the irony, but: You're preaching to the choir here. We're right there with ya - nothing about Christianity makes any logical sense. It's all about the emotional response. You know, "faith". That get-out-of-reality card.

Somewhere in the still darkness, on the far side of planet Earth, a lonely Atheist conjures up his next big thang.... as he falls into a deep slumber, he dreams of...

Faithopoly, a new board game for a new tomorrow.

Playing pieces like Carl Sagan, Einstein, Dennett, Sam Harris, Ratzinger with a dildo atop his head...

Community cards, Chest cards featuring curvaceous, buxom babes, Get-Out-Of-Reality free cards....

Collect all four denominations and erect churches on them, or if you prefer, church erections on them....

excuse me whilst I go back to snoring now--- Zzzzz

[whispers ] pssst...welcome to the forums, dj.

i love #5 "God is not

i love #5 "God is not afraid to give up on us. (how kind.) see John 15:6"

Why would he "give up" all of a sudden on something he knew was going to happen?

My Favorite

One of my most favorite arguments I've ever heard is that "Slaves" in the OT weren't like slaves during the Confederacy, they were more like "Part time workers" of today. LOL It still makes me laugh. How twisted a mind does one need to believe this? This perfect book, written by words created by god, can't even write itself to make sure people know the difference between part time workers and slaves?

god -- I tried you on for size.... you were a little long in the crotch, loose in the waist, short in the length and you made my butt look extra flat. I had to take you back for an exchange.

My $0.02: Sadly, Scole665, this is far too common.  Consider the following:

1. Why, of course the Catholic Church never taught that all interest-taking (i.e., usury) was bad...just excessive interest-taking.  (You've probably already guessed the truth: previous Popes most certainly did condemn all interest.  Nowadays, however, having money in an interest-bearing account is "good stewardship," which, of course, is obligatory by canon law for religious orders.)

2. Now, now, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints never really taught that blacks were inferior to whites.  (Except, of course, that rather embarrassing remark by Wilford Woodruff.  But that's "not faith-promoting," so of course we don't discuss that.)

3. The entire concept of "spiritual pornography" promoted by the Boston movement.  (The Boston movement has changed its name a time or three since it was actually called that.  I haven't kept up with the changes, but as you've probably already guessed, "spiritual pornography" is...well...anything that made the Boston movement look bad, so as to dissuade people from converting to it, or possibly make those that had converted reconsider.  You know...like logic and data.)

And on...and on...and on it goes.  Maybe someday I'll actually get over my embarrassment at having actually believed crap like this, but for now I'll settle for learning (or re-learning, as the case may be) whatever I can, so that hopefully I can keep from making these mistakes again, and maybe even steer someone else in the right direction.
