I saw 'Religulous' today....

...and it was better than I expected.

Bill Maher did raise a lot of good points about religion being out of touch with reality. I also liked the way he did the interviews, giving them just enough rope to hang themselves so to speak. I did notice some creative editing at spots to give more impact but nothing over the top in my opinion.

He managed to hit on all the major points but the movie started to drag at the halfway point. Still, there were a steady flow of funny bits which had the audience laughing.

It was very enjoyable overall but I think the trick will be to get believers to go see it.  The middle-aged couple in front of me left after  20 minutes so I'm assuming they were religious and offended.

Worth seeing even just for the impromtu interview with a priest outside the Vatican.

I give it 8 sins out of 10.

Well, I had to drive 30

Well, I had to drive 30 miles to see The DaVinci Code. I guess I'll be driving again to see Religulous.

It won't be in my town's theatre. Primarily because of things like this little gem:

Photobucket

Atheist Books, purchases on Amazon support the Rational Response Squad server, which houses Celebrity Atheists.

FWIW - I heard the "limited

FWIW - I heard the "limited opening" on the 3rd will be expanded on the 10th.

I liked the film, however I was really disappointed when talking to other members of the atheist community after wards who still did not understand the danger of moderate religious belief.  When I was in the film, laughing my ass off, for a brief while I felt like maybe this film will help change the tide but if people who already lack a belief in god still didn't walk out convinced dogma isn't just stupid but it's flat out dangerous than I think getting theists into the theater, sadly, it's the biggest problem.

I also saw Religulous on

I also saw Religulous on opening night, at a theater 2 towns over since it was the only one that was playing it within 25 miles. I thought it was better than I expected too, about 7 out of 10. I had heard that Christian audiences were said to have liked the film as well, but I'm not so sure about that after seeing it. It took a somewhat ridiculing approach, which Christians wouldn't like, yet at the same time he did it in almost a 'questions only' type of format.

Personally I thought it could have been much harsher with the criticism, and could have shown much more supporting knowledge. For instance, they touch on the 'in god we trust' quote on the money, but don't mention the fact that it was added much later than the country was founded.

Anyways, I thought Bill Maher summed it up well at the end at least. He brings it all into context with the self-fufilling prophecy fears of the Israel conflict. This movie should hopefully be the start of some discussion in the news and political debate.

At the end of the movie, everyone in the theater clapped, which surprisingly was at least 100 poeple. This was encouraging Smiling But, it was probably just the Atheists that showed up on opening night anyways I guess.
