Class Action Suit Against EA

If you play games you probably know about EA and the extreme copyright protection known as Securom that installs itself on your computer without your permission and can't be deleted. Now there may be a class action suit against that evil company that includes anyone who wound up with it on their computer. If you did check it out here.

There are already patches,

There are already patches, cracks, and vundo fixes to get rid of the crap that comes in with new games.

If you research the game before installing it then typically someone has already worked around or eliminated these problems.

If they sue and win then EA will just raise the price of their games and still keep looking for the impassible copyright 'virus'. Right?

I love how people are

I love how people are werking en masse to give poor ratings to games that have securom.  Amazon has been caught out quite bad censoring peoples reaction and dislike to it too.

Darth, I haven't really looked up the cracks on it because none of the games interest me all that much.  How effectively do the cracks/patches work.  How well do they remove securom without damaging ones computer?  I've refused to run any games that install with Steam for many a year for similar reasons, I don't want Steam infesting my computer.  I know there's ways around it but they generally result in not being able to play online on official servers.  It's also the reason why I stay away from anything Sony.  They have destroyed their reputation in my mind with the rootkit things (plural), constant DRM, secret phoning home and proprietry formats etc.  I am not going to spend my hard earned money on anything which supports a system that does nothing but punish the innocent.

Mods and others reading this - please note I'm not enquiring about how to crack, asking for any instructions, or where I can find such information (which would all be illegal under the MPAA/RIAA/MAFIAA backed DMCA laws).  I am simply curious as to the affectiveness of it.

From the spore EULA when

From the spore EULA when install it you must agree to:

install and authenticate the Software on a set number of
machines which may vary by product. If the Software permits

Software may access those features at one time. Additional

services and to download Software updates and patches. Only
licensed software can be used to access online services, and
download updates and patches. If you disable or otherwise
tamper with the technical protection measures, the Software
will not function properly.

This was on their website also. EA should be able to do what they want with their software. No one is forcing you to buy it. However, I think these protection measures should be clearly labled on the outside of the box. EA could just offer all these people a refund and disable all the product keys. I'm really sure why EA hasn't tried to make this right.

The problem is this program

The problem is this program can take over your computer, disable security programs and even disable cd drivers and such. It also can't be deleted even if you uninstall the program. It uses a rootkit. This is what Sony was sued/fined for a while back. They certainly shouldn't be able to put something like this on someone's computer. The program is in effect spyware. Someone should go to prison over that.

I honestly don't care. I

I honestly don't care. I have a few EA games. I bought the games, I can play them without any problem whatsoever. Therefore I'm happy.

If they're more than bout a year old, you don't have that particular program on your computer - but any EA titles from about fall of last year on do. The big thing is it was actually Sony, not EA that made it - so they should be sued into bankruptcy and have people in prison since this was after the other lawsuit/ FTC investigation for what they were puting on CDs.

I loathe EA as much as i

I loathe EA as much as i loath Jack Thompson...

Sure i have EA games strewn about (as much as i hate to admit it... )  but some of their products have done more harm to me/my computer/my activities then all the Trojans and Malware ive ever had, combined

Battlefield 2 for example, loved the game, still have it, but it carries a specifically modified version of Punk Buster (a program i generally trust except in this 1 instance). Normally PunkBuster is used to stop people from cheating/hacking/modifying aspects of online gaming... which is a good thing, but this special version CANNOT and DOES NOT EVER SHUT OFF... ever. Unless i vape it from my hard-drive >.> (which prevents me from playing BF2, and all other PB games). Uninstall the game, PB-EA is still on my computer and working... monitoring me, checking for known mods/cracks/hacks. BF2 installation never even asks if i want to install this 3rd party program (ive even checked the EULA for any mention of it).

Battlefield 2142, that whole fiasco with EA modifing the game seemingly over-night, so they could advertise cellphones and other products in-game... no warning, no change to the EULA (all very Illegal). Took legal action, and a couple of months to get rid of those ads. Massive battle grounds with 64+ players with mechs, tanks, aircraft, floating fortresses, DO NOT mix well with constant replaying Pontiac Car video commercials smeared on every billboard in the game.

Spore... haha, not even touching that.

Bioshock (and a few other games at the time) had a 3 download maximum on all CD-Keys, after 3 installations, you key is null and void... you have to buy a new fuckin game! Oh man the consumer outcry on that one... wow

----

This is why i hope EA get hit with HUGE lawsuits for their seedy fuck ups

Even funnier is they've

Even funnier is they've pretty much abandoned Sim City Societies - they even fired all the moderators on the BBS for the game - and now almost all the recent posts there are ones bashing EA. My signature there has been "FUCK EA!!!!! " for a couple weeks with no ban or edit.

The two EA PC games I own are Fifa 08 and Spore. I think I can say they were made in the last year without lying.

Yeah. You might not have any

Yeah. You might not have any problems yet but may in the future. There have been numerous problems, from minor to total wrecking of PC due to EA/Sony's virus/malware.

Minus the spyware, Fifa is usually their... uh... "cleanest" series
