HELP ON MY COMPUTER

Okay, I'm running Windows xp on a Dell Optiplex GX260 and I'm trying to put a video card in -- a PNY GeForce 8400 GS and it WON'T WORK. I will work untill my computer starts to load windows then it freezes on a black screen and when I hit power instantly turns off, so I'm assuming it freezes. I just formatted my C: and installed ONLY this driver, my computer says it's good to go, but I can't make it work. Any ideas friends?

try this

Try a self inflicted gun shot.  It  wont help your computer but you wont care anyways.

try again

Grab the  nearest 10-year-old and twist their arm untill they explain it to you; it works for me.

Did I mention my team won but two other teams didn't lose, like they were suppose to. So my Patriots didn't make  the play offs; Boo who who Sob sob.     "SNIFF"

Honestly it sounds like you

Honestly it sounds like you got a bad card. PNY is really good about replacements, so time to pull out the info cards and get a RMA. Smiling

They have for me, usually with minimal hassle.

Jill's right; if it won't

Jill's right; if it won't work using a fresh install of MS-Windows and the driver that came with the card, it's probably the card. I'd guess bad memory, but that's just becuase it's always memory. There's a lot of it on these new cards.

Best Buy will replace it. They pretty much have to. Just be glad you didn't buy it from Circuit City.

1. I left out a fact -- This

1. I left out a fact -- This was happening before I got this card, but my old cards fan stopped so I assumed it was turning off to keep it from melting. So it's probably my motherboard.

2. I live near Dallas... and I don't really care about football . . . Laughing out loud Sorry guys

Heh. Ok, it's almost always memory.

If you can burn CDs, get this ISO: Memtest86+

That utility will help you figure out which DIMM has the bit of memory going bad. ALl you have to do is burn it to CD, then boot the machine from that CD.

I have this same problem

I have the same problem using a PNY 8400 GS and Dell GX260. It is this combination only that does not work. I can put other graphics cards in it with no problem and the PNY 8400 works in other computers just not these 2 together. Not that this helps fix the problem but I think the card you got is fine just something with this combo doesn't work.

Respectfully disagree. I am also one of those dangerous hacker types who knows how to make a computer into my bitch.

While memtest is a great little program, it is also so little that it will fit on a single floppy disk. It would be a huge shame to use a whole CD for just that. A much better use for a CD would be UBCD which has memtest86+ among many other goodies. You can get it here:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

In any case, memtest86+ only tests system RAM, not the stuff on a graphics card.

As for direct advice, I would return the graphics card to bestbuy, get the money back and then buy the same card from newegg.com for a good deal less money.

Not only is the egg cheaper but it ships fast, often the same day that you order and they understand that the first word in “customer service” is customer. It is basically impossible to get dicked around by the employees of newegg. I can't say any of that of beastbuy.

I second that opinion on New Egg.  I also boycott Best Buy after they completely fucked me over a few times.

Looked more like expanding an idea with more good ideas to me.

Jill, call it whatever

Jill, call it whatever you want to. If you were raised on Sesame Street like I was, you would call it “Shirley”

In any case,

Then it is not probably your motherboard. Unless of course it is. Do you have other information that you have not shared with us?

Let me ask you a question that goes to the department of “things that only I know”. Have you noticed an odd smell recently, perhaps one that you would associate with electricity?

I took the liberty of looking your hardware up on the dell website and if the answer is yes, then you are fucked and you need a new computer. Even if the answer is no, a new motherboard will not solve your problem and you need a new computer.

What you describe is typical of “bad capacitor syndrome”. It is a much longer story than I need to go into but suffice to say that involves Chinese industrial espionage.

If you want to build a new computer, I can help and give you lots of resources. I can provide websites and hardware lists. The only thing that I need from you is to know what your goals are so that I can make appropriate reccomendations.

If you want to buy one already made, then I would refer you to whatever is on sale locally. Just don't go to beastbuy again. They are in bankruptcy court and they offered 4,000 of their corporate employees a “voluntary severance package” two weeks ago. Which is really odd considering that circuit city had it's own financial implosion a few weeks before that.

Really, how does one of the world's largest retailers of electronics not do very well at x-mas time when their largest competitor goes down the tubes before Halloween?

Cory is right on the money. Not saying that it's the problem but there are combinations that simply do not work. Modern day PCs are frankenstien machines, you just kind of stick parts together. The Standards are not strict enough to insure total compatibility across the board. You should be able to find a list of compatible cards and memory by searching the intertubes. If you don't find anything about it not being compatible it's probably not the issue. And because you had problems before the card I'm inclined to go with the motherboard as the source of trouble.

I also looked up the specs on your PC. The PNY 8400 GS requires a 300 W power supply. Your system at most has a 250 watt depending on which model of the GX 260 you have. Also depending on how many other devices you have added you don't have enough power to run it. You don't say which video card you previous had but I imagine it was lower power. Your description that it starts OK until it gets to Windows suggests as soon as the power hog GPU starts you cause a current limit. You can either get a bigger power supply or since this system is older just get a new PC as this one isn't worth more than the PNY 8400 you bought.

Hope this helps.
