Best underrated albums of all time

Listen up, 'cause I'm only saying this once.

These are the best under-rated albums of all time:

Gus - Gus

Dog's Eye View - Happy Nowhere

Micheal Penn - Free for All

Eels - Electroshock Blues

Maktub - Khronos

Spanic Boys - Spanic Family Album

Jason Faulkner - Presents Author Unknown

Nevada Bachelors - Hello Jupiter

TV on the Radio - Dear Science

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise - Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise

Smoking Popes - Destination Failure

The Caulfields - Whirligig

The Gourds - Waterbag

Songs in the Key of X

There's a lot more, but I don't want to tell you.

I'd like to say it's a diverse group, but really not. It ranges from folk-punk (Neutral Milk Hotel) to y'allternative (The Gourds), with a slight detour into R&B (Robert Bradley, Maktub, TV on the Radio). Otherwise, it's mostly power-pop.

I was just listening to some good fiesty music, and felt kinda... well, fiesty.

They wouldn't be underrated if everyone had heard of them now, would they?

So, give it up: what's your favorite underrated album/group/whatever of all time?

[EDIT addendum]

PS: What three did you recognize? I'm just curious. I'll have to take 'em off my list. (Hah! I crack me up.)

 Well, I know Neutral Milk

Well, I know Neutral Milk Hotel and the Gourds.  I think maybe I've heard of TV on the Radio, but I'm not sure.

My favorite underrated album is Thrak, by King Crimson.

Cool. Thanks. I've heard of King Crimson, but don't have any of their albums. I will have to purchase this one.

I absolutely love getting new music. I mean, new as in, different from what I've heard before. That was part of the point of this thread, to see what other people considered "underrated," and maybe get some pointers for new stuff. In the record shop, I always ask the clerks, "What's your favorite underrated album of all time?" That's how I discovered several of those on the list. So far, I've only been steered wrong once. (They snuck some country in on me. Ewwwww.)

Leaves - BreathElf Power -

Leaves - Breath
Elf Power - Creatures
David Byrne - Uh Oh
Old 97's - Too Far to Care
Hope of the States - The Lost Riots
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
Mobius Band - City vs Country
The Spinto Band - Nice and Nicely Done

David Byrne was the lead singer of the Talking Heads, his solo stuff didnt get as much/any airtime though.  If you like Indie music, you probably have heard of most of these.

As soon as I read TV on the Radio in your list, I got the song New Health Rock stuck in my head... thanks.

Thanks for the list.

Yep, I've been a huge fan of David Byrne since Remain In Light. I have Fight Songs, and recently saw Old 97's in concert -- they put on a great show. I have Electric Version (HUGE  Neko Case fan). The others I've not heard of.

My earworm of the day: Dancing Choose.

Starless and bible black.

Discipline is the closest anyone (imho)has come to mixing  great pop songs with prog rock.

Maybe they're not underrated...

Among those who know them, they're definitely not underrated.  I'd say they're under-known.  I've seen them twice and both times were amazing.  One time was on the Thrak tour and the other was an unannounced show at the Hard Rock Cafe in New Orleans where they played only "old" Crimson like Red, Bible Black, Beat, Court of the Crimson King, etc.  It was strange hearing Adrian Balew singing all those really old songs, but he did a great job with them.

A couple days late to the table but....

TV on the Radio - "Dear Science" was picked by Rolling Stone critics as best album of 2008 (6th on the readers poll).

My favorite underrated of the last few years is:

The Raconteurs - "Consolers of the Lonely"  Really Great (IMHO).

Also like (that I think are under-rated):

X - "More Fun in the New World"

David Byrne - "The Catherine Wheel"  This and Jesus Jones may not have been under-rated at the time (memory long gone) but I never hear anyone talk about them.  This one has a great ambient track with an old time radio preacher begging forgiveness.

Lou Reed - "The Blue Mask" Low-key, low-fi, typical Lou

The Hives - "The Black and White Album" (most of the songs, coupla clunkers)

Jesus Jones - "Doubt"

Warren Zevon - "Stand in the Fire"  Best Live Album evar

Was (Not Was) - "Born to Laugh at Tornadoes" But weird, not to everyones taste

Lots of other albums I love, but were not under-rated (The Clash - "London Calling", The Strokes "First Impressions of Earth", Dylans "Blood on the Tracks" for instance).

Best anything, ever:

Best anything, ever: Elbow.

Best rap album: Aquemini - Outkast

Best underrated album by a well regarded band: Echoes - Pink Floyd

Best accidental purchase: Fight With Tools - Flobots

"Faith, Faith is an island in the setting sun,
but proof, proof is the bottom line for everyone."
Proof, Paul Simon

Nothing this hard should taste so beefy.

I don't know the name of the album, I think it's "Red" that actually has the song "Starless". That is a great album.

Underrated? Dear Science was Rolling Stone's, The Guardian's, Spin's, MTV's, EW's, and Pitchfork's #1 Album of 2008! And In The Aeroplane Under The Sea is considered one of the greatest albums of all time!

My list:

Hot Club De Paris - Live at Dead Lake

Beneva Vs Clark Nova - Sombunall

I Am Robot and Proud - Uphill City

Final Fantasy (not the video game) - Has a Good Home

Dear and the Headlights - Drunk like Bible Times

Trophy Scars - Alphabet. Alphabets.

Perry Vincent - They Only Destroy Us EP

Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew

Telefon Tel Aviv - Map Of What is Effortless

That's some

That's some pretty underground shit, Nigel.  Never heard of any of them and I would like to think I have a pretty diversified palette when it comes to music.

King's X - Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous is a pretty underrated album.  Also Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet isn't bad, either.

*sigh*

I didn't know anybody else knew about TV on the Radio until Hark_For_I mentioned it above. Damn it! Oh, well. At least it is confirmed: I have excellent taste. I'll have to remove it from the "underrated" category.

I still say ItAOtS is underrated. Sure, Hazeldine covered April 8th, but that's because Jeff Magnum is the bass player. And that song's not on ItAOtS. So I think it should've gotten much more recognition. I think. But that's me.

In no particular

In no particular order:

Freddy Jones Band - "North Avenue Wake-up Call"

Chalk Farm - "Notwithstanding" (kills me that these guys only released one album)

Big Head Todd & the Monsters - "Riviera"

Mark Knopfler - pretty much all of his solo releases

Chris de Burgh - "Crusader"

BoDeans - "Black and White" (though I'd consider most of their albums underrated)

Van Morrison - "Enlightenment" (absolutely genius album)

October Project - "October Project"

Steve Winwood - "Steve Winwood" (1977 solo debut album)

John Hiatt - just about all his stuff is remarkably underrated, but the "Perfectly Good Guitar" album is one of my favorites

Nobody I know was brainwashed into being an atheist.

Yep. I love that song. I'm not sure what he means when he starts out with those lines, but they don't factor in later. And later, when he's singing "Two Headed Boy," there's that necro-homo-erotic line about "placing fingers in the notches in your spine," it's just so surreal and creepy and beautiful. I'm more than willing to forgive a probably-ironic line about "I love you Jesus Christ" that has absolutely no context.

But, yeah, the first million times I listened to the album, I cringed.

[EDIT addendum]

Magnum had me at "semen stains the mountaintop."

Ok, this one may not be as

Ok, this one may not be as obscure as what you're looking for but I do feel a need to add it to the list.

The Nine Inch Nails double album The Fragile seems to be rather underrated to me.  Most people think of The Downward Spiral or Pretty Hate Machine and don't really give The Fragile the respect it deserves.  All hail Trent Reznor!

"I am that I am." - Proof that the writers of the bible were beyond stoned.
