Here is a snipit that I feel indicates the church's actual motivation for helping...
"In faith-based communities, if you ask pastors across the country, many will tell you that attendance is up; however donations are down," said Khalfani-Cox, who is known as the Money Coach. "People are turning to the church for help, whether it's help making their mortgage payment, putting in a prayer request, assistance in finding a job or just getting practical, day-to-day strategies for managing debt."
What a great win-win for the church. Attendance is up and this is their time to really pimp their message. Once those that are asking for spiritual help with finances get over their current situation they will A-Thank GOD and B-Donate to the church. Their attendance will remain high well after the countries economy woes ...

I will never accuse churches of never having any business savvy.
Right, and how business grow is through marketing. Why the modern monotheistism is popular, is not because a magical daddy chose Muslims or Christians or Jews. They became popular because the people selling it were good at selling it.
The Ancient Egyptians for over 3 thousand years fell for the marketing of Osirus and Horus. Their hyrogliphics and scrolls and temples are pretty to look at, but those gods are rightfully placed with the myth of the Easter Bunny.
"We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus -- and nonbelievers."Obama
