St Malachy's prophecies about the final popes

I would like to hear what the rational response is for the St. Malachy prophecy

For those of you who don't know, the St. Malachy prophecy says that the world is going to end after the final pope.

Apparently he has been "incredibly accurate" in predicting the upcoming and final popes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes

I tried to find a rational response to this...however i couldnt find anything but a bunch of cheaply made websites by doomsday theorists.

Apparently we're all supposed to die in 2012. /bleh/

First of all, "prophecies" are notoriously vague.

This is so that numerous interpretations can arise.  Why just look at your own link, with respect to the modern Popes.  It's almost as if somebody decided that "the prophecy fits, dammit" ahead of time, and now people are trying to figure out how Benedict is going to be...wait for it..."the glory of the olive."  Right.  Once they figure out something that they think will stick, they'll move on to other Popes.

The good news is, you've got somebody-or-another backed into a corner.  That 2012 date?  Don't ever forget it.  On January 1. 2013, you hunt that individual down and remind them that the scheduled end of the world didn't occur.  (Of course, I can't *prove* right now, that the world will not, in fact, end in 2012...but if you know anything at all about the history of "prophetic" predictions of the end of the world, then you know that these predictions have just about the worst track record that is possible.)  Obviously, I smell more of the same.  So, either 2012 will be just another year, or a bunch of us here (myself included) are going to start roasting (or is that "partying"?) in the city of Dis, with all the other heretics.

Yes, but what about the

Yes, but what about the other popes?

Or are all of the popes that fit the prophecy fitting it in a very amibigious way (i.e. they are using any reason to say that it fits)?

Basically. It's how psychics do it, but they're usually better at it than their ancient versions were. The article you linked to even states that the prophecy was insufficient to actually predict any pope that came after it was written. Only after an election does someone find anything that fits. What good is prophecy that only works in hindsight?

Joe...

...what I meant to imply about the other Popes is that, in all likelihood, it worked in the past in the exact same way for them.  The only difference is that now somebody has worked out the way that the "prophecy" applies to, say, Pope Benedict XV, and they're still working on Pope Benedict XVI, and most likely will be until long after his death.

They have to get their story straight, you know.

Anything as far as

Anything as far as "prophacy" is nothing more than someone reading something in the past, and turning around and adapting the current claim to fit the past. There is nothing magical or real about "prophacy" other than the mundain human behaivor of seeing what one wants to see.

If the end of the world is because of a religious battle, it will have nothing to do with any fictional god in the sky, it will be because humans are too stupid and credulous to give up on such superstition.

:3

When the green falcon grows taller than the bear, the lion will begin the course to the end of the world. Be warned for when the pigeon is at noon the time is near.

Most of that already

Most of that already happened. You're late. Sticking out tongue
Bush was the falcon, freedom the bear, Israel the lion, though we're still waiting on the pigeon....

Oh, really, Vastet?

Interpret this:

"When the egg of the west grows green, the the glorious chair will rise from the sea and the rain of despair will bring about the ascendancy of metal."

HA! Make that fit a Pope...or somebody...if you can.

No, I'm not smoking anything.  And I'm stone-cold sober.  I swear.  Although I *was* diagnosed with Asperger's, recently.

Eep....ahem... ~When the egg

Eep....ahem...
~When the egg of the west grows green,
Clearly a reference to America's jealousy over oil in the East.

~the the glorious chair will rise from the sea and the rain of despair will bring about the ascendancy of metal.
Something to do with a Hawaiin volcano. I must deliberate further. Smiling

Obama! Bwa ha ha!
Probably refers to the softening of US shock & awe tactics over the next few years, and the eventual abandonment of oil as an energy source.

Sometimes I amaze even myself...

Okay, Vastet... you win.

Okay, Vastet...

you win.  I can't come up with anything more resembling a drug-induced argument over whether or not trees dream than the phony "prophecy" I already posted.  If you can make *that* make some kind of sense, well then...

...I suspect that you have a future in theology!
