I call fail. #1: The

I call fail.

#1: The company doesn't just drive around looking for vehicles to tow, they have to get called. Therefore they were trying to punish the wrong people. A cop or security officer was the reason the guy walked home. Well... that and his poor observation of street signs.

#2: By law, in both our nations, NO business is required to accept anything unreasonable as tender. I have literally seen this kind of stupidity go to court and get thrown out. Anything more than 100 coins is unreasonable. This was 88x unreasonable.

Well in Canada your are right, http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/showdoc/cs/C-52/bo-ga:l_I-gb:s_8//en no more than 25 cents in pennies, 40 dollars in 2 dollar coins, etc, etc, etc, it's all there, however the US that's not so true as their currency act more or less states it is legal tender in any amount, however the company can specify before asking for money in which method of payment they want or will not take. For example if they had a sign or she told the guy before he produced the money that they will not accept pennies as payment then that's fine, however since she didn't do that, he can make a legal payment in pennies, as no restrictions in the method of payment was specified. However he could not get away with that in Canada.

Yah, he did pay his bill.  That was not the point of the exercise.  Then, I don't know if I should expect Canadians to understand that.

Did you guys notice when the chick said “I am making a new law right now”?  Pardon me but under what authority does she say that?  Answer:  None.

Yet she seems to feel that because she is working for a company that she has those very special rights that companies have over and above what humans are allowed to do.  That merits the stamp of bullshit.

I don't think you guys

I don't think you guys understand how vicious tow truck companies are. Here in TX you can be towed for just about any reason. These companies don't sit around waiting for calls, they actively patrol areas waiting for someone to mess up and often employ shady, sometimes just plain illegal tactics.

Only after I was towed and the period for me to file a complain lapsed that I found this website: http://www.texastowingcompliance.com/ and I was livid to find out that since I got to my vehicle before the tow truck driver was out of the parking lot he was required by law to only charge me a $40 drop fee, and give me 30 minutes to get the money. I was told tough shit, our impound lot is 20 miles away, come get it from the lot. I paid $120 to get it out plus gas to a friend.

I have no sympathy for these legal car thieves.

true story

Here in Oregon, one of the tow truck drivers got pissed over a ticket.  So he towed a police vehicle that was legally parked in a regular parking lot.  All kinds of upset he was charged with theft.

I have heard of them towing a car out of the owner's driveway.  The owner was on vacation.

I have heard of them towing cars out of the visitor's parking at an apartment.  The visitor was a social worker, one of the family kids yelled, and she ran out and threw herself on the hood of the car.  The family called the police or he would have towed her vehicle.

They circle around a neighborhood looking for any vehicle that is worth enough to get towed or looks to be someone's sole transportation.  Then they hold you up for outrageous amounts of cash to get your car out of hock.  Hundreds per day storage fees.

I don't have a problem with them towing illegally parked vehicles, or wrecked vehicles, or my own vehicle when/if it breaks down.  But there ought to be limits.

I stopped watching the stupidity when he first went in to the store with the pennies, so I didn't see that. Not that it makes a difference. He'd have been kicked to the street here, as it should have been there too. But I don't know if I should expect Americans to understand that.

 There have been a few

There have been a few half-hearted attempts to do away with the penny altogether.  I wholeheartedly support such an effort, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon.

Personally, if I'd have been the receptionist, I'd have taken the pennies, and not counted them.  If it turned out to not be right, I'd have looked my boss in the eye and said, "Sorry, dude.  Not part of my job description.  Fire me or let it go."
