Neil Degresse Tyson on Rachel Maddow
Offline Just now tonight I caught, not only a cootie spreader, but a black scientist cootie spreader on Rachel Maddow.
He was talking about the classification and history of the planet Pluto.
They put together a package where Neil went to the backwoods, in reality, town where the white farm boy scientist, long ago, discovered Pluto(in reality). They had him talking to the locals in a WHITE barber shop where the barber was shaving him in skepticism with a old time razor. You know as if they locals were looking at him while shaving him with the sharp razor, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN PLUTO IS NOT A PLANET!"
That was such kick!

Why are you focusing so much on the racial component in all this? Does the low melanin count of the people in that town or Neil's high melanin count have anything to do with all this?
And what exactly is "a WHITE barber shop"? How is that different from a barber shop? Is there a point behind these inane mentionings of race?

Does anyone relax around here? YOU are taking this more seriously than I am.
I WAS pointing out that Maddow and Tyson were subtly poking fun at bigotry. He really did travel to that town and did sit in a barber chair and was shaved by a white barber, EVERYONE INVOLVED including the locals were in on the joke.

Edit: I watched it and apparently missed it, because I don't see anything to do with race or racism being hinted at
It just looks like one of the old barbershop things from ages ago, with people sitting around talking because they didn't have internets.
Maybe it's a joke tailored to a certain demographic?
Theism is why we can't have nice things.
If so, I'm out of the demographic as well, and I've learned to take everything Brian says as a joke until proven otherwise.
The clip ends with the barber's razor to Tyson's throat, teasing him that he "screwed with Pluto". Listen to the tone of the barber's voice at the end of the clip. Then WATCH as it goes back to Tyson and Maddow. They are clearly laughing at joke in the clip. I saw it as laughing at the "ol days" and laughing at the "good ole boys" attitude of the past.
I thought it was a bridge builder, not only between blacks and whites but main street and scienific atheists. What better way to get white rural America, usually bible thumpers, away from the past by having a black scientist complement their hometown hero.
