I hate the shit that just happend!

I was walking my dog and a couple of dachshunds busted off their front porch, understandably to defend their home. But it was next to a busy road in which I was walking my dog on a leash, they were not on leashes. I did not know that having walked my dog past this same spot many times.  Because of the rush of the dogs and the traffic passing, on of the dogs got ran over RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! I don't blame the dog. I tried to wave down the car once I knew the dog was in danger trying to purse my dog.

THE WORST PART was that the guy's kids opened the door and let the dogs out only to watch one of them get hit.

If I hadn't gone on this walk tonight those kids wouldn't have watched their dog get run over.

That sucks.  I has the same

That sucks.  I has the same thing happen to me, also with a dachshund.  It was out in the middle of a country road in front of a house but it was obviously not from around there because it was terrified.  I pulled over and tried to coax it off the road but before it made it a car blew through and hit it.  Poor little bastard died lost and confused, and I got to move his body off the road.

But I'm a freaking softie so I'm used to feeling bad.

Everything makes more sense now that I've stopped believing.

I saw the title to this

I saw the title to this thread and thought you might say "I hate that someone kicked in my front door while I was at work and stole my 52" tv/monitor and jerked the plug on my computer and screwed up the connection on the mobo. Which is why I have not posted in the last couple of days." Oh yea but that would mean you were me I guess.

On the dogs, I see a bright side, maybe they will learn to leash or keep the dogs in, sux but sometimes it takes an experience like that to really drive home a lesson.

I have 2 dogs, one does not need a leash, she behaves so well. The other, has to be leashed and is half choked to death by the time we get back from a walk.

Faith is the word but next to that snugged up closely "lie's" the want.

What kills me the kids and the dogs doing what comes naturally to them. The kids were opening the door to go do what they do at a certain time, and at the same time the dogs, naturally went out to defend their home, and I just happened to be walking by with my dog. It just sucks that the car I was waving down couldn't stop in time and the kids saw one of their pets run over.

I know what it was like to lose my cat Payton and my mother's dog Honey under heath issues. THIS for a kid to SUDDENLY see without warning, what the fuck! What could I possibly say to those kids?

I was about 9, walking to my cousins house (we lived in the country on a a farm to market road) and my uncles dog was following me. The dog was almost a year old, kinda big, fuzzy and goofy. I had tried to chase him back home a couple of times but he always followed me around. Anyway, a truck comes along and it is getting dark, I guess they didn't see him and they ran him over.

They were kind enough to put him in the back of their truck and carry the dog and me (crying my ass off) to my uncles house, where the dog died. I blamed myself for a long time, but I guess I finally realized shit happens.

Now I will mention the careless nature of people since we are talking about sad animal happenings. I had a daschund, good loyal dog but he was nutty and ran off if he ever got out. He got out once, and I chased him all over the neighborhood. At one point he was walking across the street and I was trying to get him to come to me, and a car was comming. The speed limit was 30 and it was in broad daylight. I expected the guy to stop a minute but no, he did slow down to about 20 I would guess, and continued to run over my dog. My dog lived but I was calling that guy every name I could think of as he sped back up and left, not even knowing if he had killed my dog.

Another incident, I saw a family of ducks crossing a major road, yes I'm that weird ass guy that stopped his car, got out and stood in the other lane (blocking them both) untill the ducks were across. People were cussing and flipping me off. It is the busiest street in town but, I was not going to watch an idiot smash a duck.

I have many more examples of human carelessness but if you have read this far I'm sure you are bored of it lol.

This is Portland, home of the tree - and duck - huggers.  Beavers too, I guess.  (ducks, beavers, OSU, UO)  Anyway, there is a fairly busy two lane road not far from my house.  Sort of a three way corner with a light and shortly after, a creek that floods occasionally, then a section of a miles long bike path/hiking trail with a cross walk.  Johnson Creek Blvd, if you have been there.  My husband was driving home and traffic had stopped.  Not terribly unusual at that light especially at rush hour.  But this was going on longer than usual.  The guy behind my husband was getting up tight and honking.  Then the cause of the traffic stoppage got far enough across the road - in the cross walk - so that my husband and the guy behind him could see.  The upset guy started laughing, a pair of mallards and some ducklings were walking sedately in the hiking trail cross walk as they crossed the road.  Traffic backed up for blocks for a family of ducks - it's Portland.

good cause for a "that sucks circle"

Man, there are some days when the coincidences are all on the dark side.  I know it is hard, but if it wasn't you, eventually, it would have been someone else.

Hard to tell how it will affect the kids - I've had some people tell me, well, if the dog got run over, it was just a stupid dog.  It all depends on how the parents take the death of the dog as to how the kids will take it.  What I hope these people learn is to fence their yard.  And I hope it doesn't happen to the next dog they get.

I once ran over a puppy.  It was out in the country.  Why do country people think dogs won't run out on the road?  Just a split rail fence and the house was right on a state highway.  The pup ran up out of tall grass in a very deep road side ditch, I never saw him until he was under my rear wheels.  I had to let my husband drive the rest of the way.  We stopped and informed the people who lived in the house.  They were not terribly concerned - oh, we've only had him a week or two, no big deal.  I was a wreck for days.

I've noticed this as well. Rural people I have met seem to think that letting dogs run around without collars, leashes, and next to roads is fine. If the dog doesn't come back one day they just shrug it off and get another one.

I had to stop for a dog in the road today on my way home. It was just standing there, no collar no leash, and looked confused. It looked less than a year old, it still had the "puppy" look. It certainly wasn't wild, I think someone just threw it outside figuring it would come back. I see that a lot around here.

It makes me sad.

It makes me sad.

We have been rescuing dogs (we try to stick to Aussies and Border Collies as our personal preferences) for over 15 years now.  And we have to give it up.  It is so difficult not to burn out for just these reasons.  If you don't care enough to train the dog, provide vet care, feed it something other than junk, why get a dog?

Living in central Washington state for 10 years, every spring there were dozens of dead dogs along the road.  We had a 50 mile commute and spring was the worst.  People didn't spay or neuter, fence a kennel area or train the dog.  It's just a dumb dog after all.

I really, really have to give up rescuing dogs.  We are trying to find a home for a nice little English Springer Spaniel.  Someone expressed interest, but after seeing the dog's pictures, didn't want her because she didn't have enough white on her face or neck.  I just can't be polite over the phone any more.  "Why don't you get a nice cement dog statue you can paint the color you want it to be?"
