George Carlin on Prayer
...But now you come along and pray for something. Well suppose the thing you are praying for isn't in god's divine plan.? What do you want
him to do? Change his plan? Just for you? Isn't that sort of arrogant? It's a Divine Plan!! What good is being God if every run-down shmuck
with a two-dollar prayer book can come along and fuck with your plan?
And here's another problem you might encounter. Suppose your prayers aren't answered? What do you do then? What do you say? "Well
it's God's will. Thy will be done"? Fine. But if it's god's will, and he's gonna do what the fuck he wants anyway, why bother praying in the first place?
Isn't it a big waste of time? Couldn't you just skip the praying part and go straight to "his will"? It's all very confusing to me.
So now I pray to Joe Pesci. I get the same 50/50 results. Joe doesn't fuck around.

"...but truth is a point of view, and so it is changeable. And to rule by fettering the mind through fear of punishment in another world is just as base as to use force." -Hypatia

I'll see your George Carlin quote and raise you another -
"I've begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, a lovely day. There's no mystery, no one asks for money, I don't have to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to God are all answered at about the same 50-percent rate."
"Now this ... is the noble truth of the origin of suffering: it is this craving which leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there, that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for extermination." - Buddha, the 2nd Noble Truth

Since we're all quoting bits and pieces anyway, here's the whole enchilada -
"Now this ... is the noble truth of the origin of suffering: it is this craving which leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there, that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for extermination." - Buddha, the 2nd Noble Truth
