The Rational Response Squad is a group of atheist activists who impact society by changing the way we view god belief. This site is a haven for those who are pushing back against the norm, and a place for believers of gods to have their beliefs exposed as false should they want to try their hand at confronting us. I can't wait for Brian to put up the new site. I'm hoping that new procedures to prevent the spammers would be a welcomed change.
I liked to see new accounts take 24 hours to be verified. After that, they are only allowed to post one message, per day for one week. If they post something constructive, logical or sensible then their account is upgraded.
I'd also suspect that only long time veterans can by-pass the "spell this" picture box to keep truly devoted spammers from even bothing to try and get passed the 24 hour wait period.
I just noticed that dickhead when I signed on just now.
But holly crap where the fuck have I been. I am a huge Weird Al fan, what album is this on? I cannot believe I have not heard this one before.

They do this all the time, we're just normally able to head it off sooner. I got em.
I can't wait for the new site either.

We've been working on an upgrade of the site which will change quite a bit of the look and operational aspects for over a year.

Far too strict for my taste digital... we want more members and the occasional theist and we should make it has easy as possible to join up and post a comment. This also means we have to put up with irritating spam, regretable but thus is the price of free speach.

i second this. i know i would never even have bothered with a second post 5 years ago had those kind of restrictions been in place. i've visited a couple sites that have restrictions like this...usually i can see that all 7 members are online. might as well work through MSN.
"I have never felt comfortable around people who talk about their feelings for Jesus, or any other deity for that matter, because they are usually none too bright. . . . Or maybe 'stupid' is a better way of saying it; but I have never seen much point in getting heavy with either stupid people or Jesus freaks, just as long as they don't bother me. In a world as weird and cruel as this one we have made for ourselves, I figure anybody who can find peace and personal happiness without ripping off somebody else deserves to be left alone. They will not inherit the earth, but then neither will I. . . . And I have learned to live, as it were, with the idea that I will never find peace and happiness, either. But as long as I know there's a pretty good chance I can get my hands on either one of them every once in a while, I do the best I can between high spots."

I think that is beyond the sophistication of the current software. We tried blocking all new accounts for awhile. I was spending hours daily looking at them using http://www.stopforumspam.com/search to find the bad guys. At one point I noted there was a new account being created every 2 mins. Robots. (Right now it is about 4 an hour). Then Brian figured rightly we were losing real people and not spammers and turned it back to allowing new accounts to be active right away. I am sure there were several real people deleted. Pages and pages of phony userids looking for that one needle in a haystack. So it is innocent until proven guilty. So when on I am looking for violations and then blocking and deleting spam. The one good thing is we still don't allow people to anonymously post anymore, mostly spam and drive-bys anyway. We had to weed through a long approval que looking for legitimate posts. We all are looking forward to the new site when this will be under better control. Til then the mods and Brian will whack away.

That looks familiar.
I agree with you folks that the restrictive method is not the way to go. I do hope to have some reasonable measures in place to cut down on spam.

The thing is that eventually spammers will break ANY security feature that doesn't effectively shut a site down completely. Once one spammer figures it out, it spreads quickly.
Spam is with us to stay. All you can do is curb it, trying to stay ahead of the spammers.
It's evolution.
