Religion 101 Final Examination
..important!
This is the final examination for the course. Anything below 60% will be treated as an F. The essay at the end is optional. Writing it will add an automatic 10% to you total grade based on the mutiple choice questions. Good Luck!

Yesterday, while dressed in a flame resistant suit (up to 3,000 degrees) and carrying the latest model fire extinguisher, you discover your neighbor's house is on fire. As the flames quickly spread, you stand and watch your neighbor's new baby burn to death. Which of the following best describes your behavior?
a.All-powerful

b.Call the police on your cell phone
c.Yell "POLICE!" and run toward the attacker in a threatening manner
d.Calmly walk away, because God works in mysterious ways, and what appears "evil" to our finite human mind, may in fact be part of a vaster plan in God's infinite mind, so it's best not to interfere
5.You are the incarnated Son of the all-powerful and all-loving Creator of the universe. What would be a good way to demonstrate your compassion and power?
a.Cure cancer forever
b.Cause all the earth's deserts to bloom with food crops
c.Unite the world with a common language and an end to poverty
d.Conjure up a jug of wine and follow it up by walking on water
6.Since we can never "know" whether or not a God exists - it is fundamentally a matter of "faith" - it's best to be a believer since you have nothing to lose, but everything to lose if your disbelief is incorrect. Keeping in mind that the fate of your soul depends on the right choice, in which God should you place your belief? For extra credit, include a brief essay justifying your choice, along with the reasons why you reject the other three.
a.Zeus
b.Quetzalcoatl
c.Vishnu
d.The Holy Trinity
(*Note: Choice D assumes you were born around 400 A.D. or later, after the invention of the Trinity)
7.You are the Creator of the universe. Your chosen people are a tribe of nomadic herdsmen, presently in bondage on one of the millions of your planets. Their ruler is being quite obstinate. a.Cause the ruler to drop dead of a heart attack
b.Cause the ruler to fall off a cliff

8.You are a Starfleet Federation explorer in the process of cataloging two newly discovered planets. The majority of the inhabitants of each planet believe in a deity, but they are two different deities. Deity "X" is said to be not only all-powerful, all-loving, and all-knowing, but the designer of a marvelously complex and ordered world. Deity "Y" is said to be indifferent, absent, unconcerned with the affairs of his planet, and some even say evil. Which god rules over which planet?
Planet A: Has apparently achieved a state of advanced benign equilibrium in which there are no viruses or diseases, and only a very small number of natural disasters, which, when they do strike, always eliminate only the sinful and evil. The inhabitants, both plant and animal, have learned to maintain their existence through photosynthesis, and thus do not have to kill and eat each other in order to survive. There are no "birth defects;" every inhabitant comes into existence perfectly formed and equipped for a long and productive life.
Deity X_____
Deity Y_____
Planet B: Adorned with many examples of beauty and order, it is also constantly beset by hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, volcanoes, lightning bolts, viruses, disfiguring diseases, parasites, leeches, flies, crop-destroying pests and many other phenomena which afflict both the innocent and the evil. Every life form on the planet can only sustain its existence through the destruction and consumption of other life forms. Some of the inhabitants are born with a crippling condition called a "birth defect", which condemns them to living extremely limited, short, or painful lives.
Deity X_____
Deity Y_____

Shiva, who wants you to pray over his penis;
Allah, who wants you to fly airliners into buildings;
Catholic God; who speaks directly through the Pope;
Baptist God, who most definitely does not;
Jesus, who wants you to castrate yourself to ensure arrival in heaven
Jehovah, who any day now, is going to kill everyone on the earth except for his Witnesses

What's with people being surprised when questions are not responded to? Sometimes people just don't want to respond-- not because they can't. This is a multiple choice quiz (for the most part), therefore its not like its a hard quiz.. it may, however, be a badly written one.
Oh yah.. I'm in an airport.. so, I decided to come back for a moment to just see whats been going on in this place, even though I'm still trying to keep my distance.
c.
a. followed by b. or c. depending on what is called for based on his condition (heart attack has more than a few possible outcomes and levels of seriousness)
e. Cowardly and/or sadistic
a. (although, a rock vs a butcher knife doesn't really seem like a fair fight-- perhaps a large branch or some sort of battle axe)
e. none of the above (question asks "good" not, "out of the following choices which would "best".--however, all things being equal, a b c and d.)
I'm going for the extra credit. Sweet (but granted, my knowledge of the other deities is somewhat limited.).
My reason for choosing not to believe in either a b or c is based on the same reasonable (in my opinion) perception. Each of these three exists within a pantheon of gods and goddess. There power is neither absolute nor do their followers attribute an "all-loving" characteristic to the god or goddess. By choosing to believe in only one of these gods (which, in some cases, required by the particular god), I would undoubtedly risk angering another. Since neither god has absolute power I better watch out and consider, at any point in time, in whom's territory I am currently residing. For instance, if I worship Zeus, be careful about the ocean. If I worship Poseidon, be careful in the sky. Furthermore, since I have heard of no attempt to explain why any particular one of these gods or goddess would care what one of us does (when obviously they have their own problems to deal with, ones of the 'divine' political level), and furthermore, why, since I have not chosen to worship any of them, I have not suffered at their hands (I have not been lost at sea, nor struck by lightening, my house has not been razed by the followers of Hera nor my ability to experience love by my lack of worship for Aphrodite.
So.. I choose d. I will ignore for the moment the ideas of "everything to lose if my disbelief in a particular is incorrect." I do not believe this. I make choices based on what I perceive to be real and what I sense to be morality and logic. Based upon these choices I make other, specific, choices. Whatever consequences that may come about because of them I would not equate to having "lost" something.. even as I would not say I "gained" something, merely that I have come to the result of my actions and choices. At whatever end there is or may be, will not change that my life is lived according to the choices I make based upon the perceptions I have. While individuals "choices" of "belief and disbelief" may change.. the particular premise that they change according to my perception does not, and therefore "gained" or "lost" is relative.
e. none of the above. (the possible outcomes of any one of these particular choices, coupled with the fact that I am NOT all knowing so I cannot know which of the outcomes would come about because of a particular choice of action, the question is rendered meaningless.. even as earlier ones were. Lets say for a moment.. as I did before 'all things being equal'-- meaning, if the ruler dies then a good hearted ruler of less hardened personality comes in his stead as well as no drawback is created within the system I have put into place-- then my choice would be along the lines of a or b.)
Deity X or Y.
Deity X or Y.
(This question is equally as meaningless because it asks me to make a statement of opinion when, in the case of the given situation, statement of fact would be in order. It would be as if to say, I walk into a house where two people live. One person eats only oranges and the other eats only pears. One is healthy, the other is not. What does the healthy person eat? What does the unhealthy person eat? While I could state some kind of supposition.. I could just as easily ask the individual person what they eat.. at which point my statement of opinion wouldn't matter. If it's right, bravo, if its not, so what? It was an opinion anyways. So.. in the case of this given situation.. I'd ask the particular planet what deity they believe in-- I am, after all, there.
I am not aware of the number. My guess would be e. Zero (independent of faith).
a. Whatever was or was not the one true religion before.
b. Whatever was or was not the one true religion before.
c. Whatever was or was not the one true religion before.
d. Whatever was or was not the one true religion before.
(An earlier question asks me to accept the premise that I cannot "know", and therefore my belief is fundamentally based on "faith". Well.. then what is the purpose of this question? I cannot "know", therefore why would I wish to present myself as if I knew what is the "one true" religion in a particular case.
e. Explanation exists, for it did happen, yet the number of variables within the equation are not known by me at this time. However, the explanation would seem to entail a mixture of muscle movement, brain activity, wind, geographical attributes, relative strength of the grass, etc.
d. Since the individuals a. or b. have relatively less historical basis as to their existence then either c or d, then they would be relatively less likely to be true. Furthermore, dependent upon the claims of a c. relative to d., for instance if c. claimed that he could raise people (because of X, Y, Z) from the dead and his 'followers' claimed that he did, then the likely-hood of c being true would be equivalent to that of d. Granted.. 'all things being equal.'
(Why would I concede that torture is permissible under certain conditions? But.. whatever.. for the purpose of this question, as well as it does say "best" justification and not "good".)
b.
(There the quiz goes using the word "know" again when an early question has already asked me to concede something different.)
e. Lose the forest through the trees. (Is that how it goes?) Of course, if you ask me, I loved the fact that I was able to through out the concept of atoms completely after I heard that the book I was reading, concerning atoms, was going to be superceded by another book about atoms that sought to correct or expand on a particular concept of electron vibration, but before I ever read the following book.)
e. The prayer remarked upon was a particular part of the prayer, something they heard before falling asleep.
f. Divine inspiration.
g. They made it up for narrative purposes.
Wow.. in my opinion, crazy saints.
e.More complex answer.
e.More complex answer.
e. Call the police as I head back into the restaurant, knock out the gunman with his gun, perhaps break his kneecaps, then proceed to do what I can for the injured.
d. (or perhaps some e.)
(Verse? In anycase..)
e.He didn't feel like explaining 2000 years of science within the context of a few years and therefore gave a incomplete (within the context of christian theology) truth.
b. followed by c. then a.
e.Not sure.
b. and c.
("Most likely" of the four?)
d.
What? I do not agree with such a premise, so this question is not for me.
I liked #8.

very awesome. I laughed out loud a few times and had my co-workers wondering what was so funny. I was tempted to show them, but they are busy anyway. I'm not busy today...slow day for me.
I want to keep a link to it handy in case anyone I know of would be amused or annoyed by it.

I'll fight for a person's right to speak so long as that person will, in return, fight to allow me to challenge their opinions and ridicule them as the content of their ideas merit.
Well gosh. If you're not going to give us the correct answers and the grading system, how will we know if we flunked?
Number 25 is missing the correct answer as one of the selections. If you call a suicide hotline and they either don't answer or put you on hold, you're supposed to go ahead with your original plan.*
*To anyone who might take that even remotely seriously: that's just a joke.

hehe.. I didn't write the test, and the answer key wasn't supplied.
I'm kind of with you on the one question. If you think your life is that awful, there's a decent possibility you're right.
(again, please don't anybody shoot yourself because I said that... You definitely need a better reason.)
What I liked about the test is that it is a really nice way of pointing out all the real-life absurdities that we don't always think of when we're discussing things phlosophically.

Well , I am the author. The quiz was originally submitted to the excellent site www.ebonmusings.org. It blows my mind that people have actually attempted to select answers. There is no answer key because the whole point is exactly as Hamby describes it. Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up on authorship, Terrence!
All of my atheist friends have just loved it. Thanks for taking time to write it, and welcome to RRS. Hope you can hang around and contribute more!

Welcome Terrance!
Love the quiz. It was good for quite a few chuckles. (By the way, I wasn't really serious about an answer key.)
If you have more, we'd love to see them.

Actually, as soon as I wrote it, I thought of a bunch more. I would like to make it a 100-question quiz after reviewing and editing any and all comers for new ideas, excising repititions, etc. And then, my next greatest idea: I can do the reaearch and word stuff, but I need a really great artist/illustrator to collaborate on a tome I can envision for sale on the checkout counter at, oh, Starbucks or Borders, etc, to wit: The Illustrated Bible (if you get my drift.....)
What was wrong with my answers?
The idea that answers were expected.
BTW, your answer to # 23 indicates you have never read "the" Bible.
The only possible answer to 23 would be jesus, since the others aren't in the bible. But I haven't read it, and can't say for certain.
Enlightened Atheist, Gaming God.
In regards to the last two posts:
The question does not ask "which biblical character does (X) most resemble?"
Furthermore, some might contend that Jesus is even historical.
But nonetheless, I answered this way since I do not know two what extent the description can be applied to the other three choices.. not necessarily because I don't know how well they describe the biblical character of Jesus.
So.. careful with what sort of assumptions you imply as absolute.
Very clever.
Actually, that's what I'd expect from most theists: a naive belief that they can erase painful realities through their dodges.
Most everyone is nicer than the christian god.
"Hitler burned people like Anne Frank, for that we call him evil.
"God" burns Anne Frank eternally. For that, theists call him 'good.'
