Gods or god
I am new to this forum, but after reading some topics i think most of the threads are concerned with discusion about the judeochistian god.
While this is natural since most of us live in culture dominated by judechristian belief , I think we must open the discusion. But if we stay concerned about the existance or not existance of just one god, we became entraped in the philosophical traps set by the western philosophers of the last 2000 years.
The bible is just one of the hundred of relious boks that has been written, we must not be particualrlyy concerned about it, as any othere religious text.
After all, i do not beleive in any god , Zeus, Yave, Osiris, Oding, Dagon, Huitzilopochtli or even Nanahuatzin (the most humble of the gods..).
So if you think about it. most monotheist people are atheist too. Ask any one who believes in Yaveh, or Jeohva or christ if he believes in Odin, or Zeus...He will answer NO, maybe he considereds they donot exist atl all or that they ad demons or devils.... but he is alos an atheist. The early crhistians were acuses of atheism by the roman authorities, since they did not believe in the official roman gods...
Note: sorry by my english, i am better at reading it...

i don't think anyone here would disagree with you. we tend to focus on christianity because that is the majority in this country.
i don't think christians would be interested in us, say, disproving zeus. they can see that isn't rational but it doesn't always carry over then that there god just might be a myth too.
I agree with shelleymtjoy but would also say, as an agnostic atheist, I am honor bound to say that although I am committed to methodological naturalism and understand that god, as a concept is bogus, I'd be persuaded into god-belief if good evidence presented itself. We have to be non-dogmatic about our atheism (which I think we are) and understand that what we know about the cosmos is provisional and could always be turned on its head.
I try and maintain a humble, open-minded approach to understanding the universe, the cosmos, etc.
I'm off myspace.com so you can only find me here: http://geoffreymgolia.blogspot.com
But the same arguments used to disproved Zeus by a crhistians, can be used to disprove Yave.
Ihink, the important point is that their god is just another of the many gods humans have. I have foudn is an important point when breaking the dogmatism in discusing the arguments of theist.
Maybe is a small pint, but if i just say, i did not believe in god, i am saying that this god is the only worth of discusing, bbecasue... it may be true. when we really want to sya, your god is no more true thatn any of the thousands gods created by humanity...I agree with you but I have to say personally I have never had any success with this argument. Usually a theist will say something to me like "Well of course Zeus isn't real!", giggle, and then not understand the implications.
In fact I find most theists fail to see the implications throughout their religion. Heck, most of them haven't even really read the bible - and by that I mean read more than the happy sections the hear at Church on Sunday.
There are happy sections?
Sorry to hear that, at least to my it has worked, since most of the people has prefabricated anwers, which sometimes they did not understand, but they stick to them, so i need a different aproach.
by the way, I had asummed that protestants read the bible more than catholics.
Cahtolics are not suppose to read the bible withouth guidance, something that priest ussually do not encourage...
Welcome to the forums, nanahuatzin!
We'd like to get to know you a little better. When you get a minute, we'd love it if you'd hop over to the General Conversation, Introductions and Humor forum and introduce yourself.

It really anoyees me the way people talk about the subject of their god.
Hearing the question "Do you believe in god?" Is no different than asking "Do you believe in cat?" The way it's phrased is just so non-sensicle. There are lots of gods out there, just like there are lots of cats out there. You really need to be more specific with the question like "Do you believe that there are any gods?" or "Do you beleive in this specific god?" or "Do you think that any gods exist?"
I propose that there are really more gods then meets the eye. In my opinion every person believes in a different god. You could get 10 self-declared xians and ask them 20 questions about their god and I'm sure no two people would be the same. If person 1's god likes gays and person 2's doesn't then they don't really believe in the same god do they?
Anyway, enough ranting. I'm sure most of you feel the same way.
"It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan
While a lot of theist say "all gods are the same".. actually the concepts of gods is so diverse that we should not be using the same word for all.
The gods of shintoism, or the prehispanic gods, are concepts diferent form the judeochistian, etc
What is happening here is that we are perceiving them trougg the glass of western phylosophy, which has been deeply ingrained of just one concept of god. eve if many people does not know it.
