Grandmother kicks pastor's ass
My grandmother is 79, has ovarian cancer, and is a life long atheist. She is my only surviving grandparent (the theists are dead). She has one more chemotherapy session left and has been reduced to 4'10" and 88lbs.
I visited here today. She was bent out of shape because her neighbor, a baptist minister, came to her home today to "pray over her and lay healing hands on her." My aunt had answered the door and was refusing them entry. My grandmother pushed by my aunt and said, "I don't need your prayers. I've never prayed in my life. I've been around long enough to know, there is no god. So, go spew your garbage somewhere else."
Then, she walked away. They were standing there aghast, and she said over her shoulder, "Shut the damn door, otherwise the cockroach won't get the hint."
I love my Grandma. She has always kicked ass, and it looks like she will live forever!

That's a great story. I find it interesting that your grandmother is an atheist. Its usually the grandparents who are the most into it.

Awesome. It runs in the family here too. Mine are both DSc and lifelong CSICOP members. Although, I've never heard of either of them delivering such a painful owning to a pastor.
"Physical reality” isn’t some arbitrary demarcation. It is defined in terms of what we can systematically investigate, directly or not, by means of our senses. It is preposterous to assert that the process of systematic scientific reasoning arbitrarily excludes “non-physical explanations” because the very notion of “non-physical explanation” is contradictory.

Books about atheism
Wow... thats badass for a grandmother
What Would Kharn Do?
I'm so jealous. My gram's dead (the other ones died long before I was born), but I wish she'd been that cool. When she was alive, all she ever did was bitch about democrats and tell me I'll be miserable if I don't get married (when I was 15, mind you.)
That is an awesome story! In my own personal experience you don't find many elderly people who don't believe in God.

A woman after my own heart! Go Grandma!
Hey thanks for sharing tha twith us..that's great. Ironically, I think it is mostly elderly white people who comprise most of the atheist community, if the AAI conference was any reasonably sample size to represent the community, yeah I'd say that's accurate. Here in richmond there is a group called RAFT (Richmand Area Free Thinkers), the youngest person that goes to their meetings, I believe is in his late 30's and he's the youngest by far. I don't know...perhaps the trend is changing, but...who knows..either way great story.

I am the first atheist in my gene pool
Will she adopt me?
My grandmother (the hypocritical catholic) disowned me because her son was not married to my mother and therefore she *knows* I was adopted.
some people will just actively refuse to believe in something, just because they don't like the idea.
My grandmother believes sex should only occur within marriage. She also thinks she raised her children perfectly - therefore, she does not think I could be her biological granddaughter because since her son was not married it simply is not possible.
I'm really lucky that my entire extended famly other than my parents are all fairly agnostic. After being disowned by my parents after announcing my athiesm it gave me a great support structure to hang onto. Of course, growing up a little thiest boy I was terrified for the future of grandma's soul if she didn't repent from her wickedness (something I'm horrified to admit I actually said to her face) but now it's wonderful to get together at holidays and watch my parents squirm while all my grandparents rant about the depraved republicans that live next door.
My brother and I are the only atheists in our family (including the extended one). We here about god everytime we speak to our family members, especially the ones in italy. : ) \m/ //--\\ \m/

I would've been a bit nicer about it, but good for her.
I asked her about why she wasn't nicer. She said that local theists were generally stupid and needed a clear message.

lol
Indeed some theists are so fucking closed minded about their belief they need an eye opening 'shock therapy' like experience just to snap them out of their dream world even if it is only for a minute or two
People who think there is something they refer to as god don't ask enough questions.
Good for your grandmother! Way to go. I don't think she was too strong at all - if these people are going to go knocking on people's doors they deserve to hear whatever they get. I have no reverence for their beliefs what so ever and I'm glad your grandmother doesn't either.
It's refreshing to hear of someone from her generation who is atheist, too.
I wish her well in battling the cancer.
Keep your theology off my biology.
Ugh. That's awful.
My MIL used to talk in a derogatory way about her so called 'illegitimate' grandchildren. I finally got so sick of it that every time she did I'd say "No children are illegitimate. Maybe some parents are, but no children are." She finally stopped calling children of unmarried parents 'illegitimate'.
She's in her 90's (she was in her 80's then), so I understand she's from a different generation. But still, she's lived long enough to know that kind of talk isn't acceptable - especially about one's own grandchildren.
Keep your theology off my biology.
**UPDATE**
Grandma's doctors informed her that if her blood tests are the same next month as they were today that she would be in remission! I told her about how you liked her story, and she is excited that the RRS exists.
When I asked her why she thought she did so well, she said, "Because I decided that it wouldn't kill me. Tell the RRS that I didn't need some nut from Nazareth to do it for me."

Ain't that the truth!
My grandpa left from the hypocrisy of the church and from just questioning. He is an extremely honest person, and thrives on philosophy and logic as much as I do. We are both in love with reading books on thinking and questioning matters. It's always good to sit down with him and have a conversation about the dishonesty and corruption of religious institutions. An honor to have such a relative, as opposed to the unfortanete luck most kids my age get with parents and grandparents.
"Every true faith is infallible -- It performs what the believing person hopes to find in it. But it does not offer the least support for the establishing of an objective truth. Here the ways of men divide. If you want to achieve peace of mind and happiness, have faith. If you want to be a disciple of truth, then search." - Nietzsche

R00lz!! Your grandma obviously kicks ass. My almost-former mother-in-law, who is almost as old as both of my granmothers, told me recently that despite the fact that we had a good relationship for the 10 years I was with her son, now that I'm an outspoken atheist, she can't trust me to be honest. *blargh*

Because hiding things makes you more honest? I'm constantly surprised by the ever growing stupidity that theists seem to have.
I mean, it's not possible for anybody to not believe in a god, is it?
I made your offer to Grandma. She said she appreciates the offer but couldn't stand the idea that she might have to bury a second husband. lol She says she's got 40 more "good years" in her, and my grandfather died at 60. You'd be 73; thus, too risky.
Isn't she funny?

C'est la guerre du divorce. Ex-in-laws must find some reason to choose their own over you. She has elected your faith. I suspect she is displeased with her son, but she must be more displeased with you in order to feel loyal.
Let the old Dame have her way and don't struggle over it. She will return to her senses once the "Ex" becomes a true part of the relationship.
I won't explain in the open how I know this to be true.

Nero, I love your grandmother. Can I have her???
And she's right, some of those theists really need the stuffing verbally beat outta them.
We must favor verifiable evidence over private feeling. Otherwise we leave ourselves vulnerable to those who would obscure the truth.

Damn you, fate!
Then just give her a kiss on the cheek for me.

That, I can do.
