Separation of Religion and Govt

Yesterday several tornados struck in the south. Last I checked the death toll was up to 55. President Bush told those affected by the deadly tornadoes in the South, "-- prayers can help and so can the government," He also went on to say... "I wanted them to know that this government would help them," he said. But more importantly, I wanted them to be able to tell the people in their states that the American people hold those who suffer up in prayer."

What ever happened to separation of religion and government? I work for a Real Estate branch, and we recently had to tell an agent to revise his website, he announced his Christianity on it. As it was his Realtor site which has to adhere to strict equal housing rules, such things are considered discrimination against potential customers that have a different belief, or no belief.
If someone as small as a Real Estate Broker... can't even mention he's a Christian on his website... How is it our President can mention prayers working. Further more where does he get off on saying the Americans hold the suffering up in prayer.
It's just plain wrong, and I had to vent.

Hi, and welcome to the

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

Separation of church and state still exists, it's currently in nuetral and under assault by the xtian right and our illustrious leader is at the head of it.  He totally ignores laws and the Constitution as he sees fit.

But, hey! He's the prez... and a moron.

BTW, nothing wrong with venting, vent all youl want.

Hey thanks for the welcome.

I've always taken the comment "I'll pray for you" as an

"Aw that sucks to be you but I ain't doing shit to help."

So I found it doubly ironic that he thought it was giving a message of hope.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

President not mentioned in Amendment. No law made. No implication of any one deity.

It passes on three of the tests for constitutionality.

The realtor site: Uses government funds in the application of the Fair Housing Act. Mentions christianity specifically. Is discriminatory by same standards.

It fails constitutionality.

You're absolutely right. It is wrong. However, still within constraints.

Prayer is the best way to do absolutely nothing and feel good about yourself.

No doubt. Ironic that praying for it not to happen must not have worked.

I have four coworkers off for clean up.

No one prayed specifically

No one prayed specifically for that not to happen...meanwhile I prayed for specifically that to happen.  God likes it when you're specific so he answered my prayer.  Praise Yahweh, killer of many.

That is so true. Great, great , great statement.

If a person wants to help, get off your ass, fly out to where the damange is, (flood, tornado, hurricane, earthquake, fire) pick up a hammer and some nails and start rebuilding. THAT will help.

Plus I expected nothing use but utter stupidy, like that, to come out of Bush's mouth. He is a dope

This is another great comment. It is so true and prove how selfish and self centered some people are

What a great question.  I think the biggest difference is that the real  estate agency recognizes that a business that caters to all people without offending them in regards to religion can look at ANYONE as a potential customer.  In the case of George Bush, he is a horrible business person (tends to bankrupt everything) and he is brainwashed.  His brainwashing leads him to use his platform to push his retarded beliefs about god on us, and likely his advisors have trained him in politics to simply pander to the religious people in public for votes.

I forget who wrote the book but a few years ago a white house aid, one of the leads on the faith based initiatives released a book about how the Bush administration secretly talks shit about the evangelical leaders of the country referring to them and the base of evangelicals as the "faith heads."  In the book he exposes the Bush administration and Rove of merely preaching religion for votes.

Anyone want to remind me of the books title?

On a related note

On a related note surrounding these storms.......

During their speeches on Super Tuesday, only Hillary and Obama actually acknowledged the struggles that people were going through in Tenn. No mention from the three Republicans.

The only difference between

The only difference between a politician and a preacher is the politician only promises things he can't deliver on for this life.

So they both appeal to the fearful, moronic, unwashed masses. The day is hopefully coming when mankind realizes they don't need preachers or politicians.

This is a great. What we need is more translations for what Christians say into what they really mean. You know like the what women say what they mean jokes.

Oh that would be great! I could see that being a very long and fun thread!
