My mother's eyes have opened
I can't believe it. I called my mother today because I wanted to tell her about my new move and that we are doing good. I told her how I have been invited to church umpteen times from random strangers since coming here. She said I should just go in order to meet new people. I told her that I wish there was a place where all people came together for unity and she said that's called a bar. But seriously a bar isn't a place I want to bring my kids so anyway I told her how I would feel weird and put on the spot if I attended church and had to constantly defend myself. That wouldn't be fair to the kids especially. Then, I started telling her how the whole idea of heaven was completely redonkulous and went on to explain my position on the matter. But I didn't stop there. I told her all about how the idea of Jesus was stolen from earlier religions as well as the holidays we celebrate today. She was astonished that I have put this much time in learning about xtianity. I told her that I read the bible and I try to know what I'm talking about. She might still cling to some beliefs for the time being but I think deep down she doesn't buy it. I mean to her, heaven is where my little sister is. She won't give that part up. But that's something I can live with. I'm just happy that she finally got to hear me speak openly about not believing in religion.

Very cool for you and your mom Martha. That is awesome she listened and could talk to you about it.
I think that most who claim to be believers just will to believe, but don't actually believe.
That's awesome you can have an open dialogue with your mom, and she will actually listen!
I wish my parents would listen to me for a change. About anything! It would be a nice change.
"The idea of a personal God is an anthropological concept which I am unable to take seriously." [Albert Einstein, letter to Hoffman and Dukas, 1946]
That is wonderful news! It must be a huge relief to be able to talk to her about this! I am very happy for you.
Hey Martha,
Glad to hear you're doing OK in the new place. Are you still in a motel with two bouncing-off-the-wall kids?
Wanna meet new people? Just take your kids to the park to play and no doubt you'll meet others with kids about the same age.
Wanna meet even more new people? Get a dog and play frisbee in the park.
Unfortunately, a lot of people during the getting-to-know you phase will ask you where you go to church. If you say you don't, they assume you just mean you haven't found one yet because you're new in town.
Maybe there's an Atheist MeetUp group somewhere close.

I tried the park yesterday. I felt really out of place with the people there, but now that's getting warmer I'm sure more different kinds of people will be out more. Yeah, we are still in the hotel. It sucks not being able to cook a hot meal. I don't want any pets for awhile since I had to leave my girl behind. I miss her the most of everything back in Oregon. I actually checked and there are some atheist meetups around here but I just haven't gotten around to it yet since I am really busy doing what I got to do to get grounded here. But eventually I will check into that.
To Morgadar: It's taken me 35 years to be able to talk to my mother about xtainity so there's still hope for you and your family. I know you probably don't believe that but it could happen.
I agree that most people don't really believe in religion. It's like Daniel Dennet said in an interview I watched. Something like people just believe in "belief in something"
