Question

Does anybody know of a case where a person was given a lighter sentence because he was a christian or was a faithly man? I am sure it happens but i was wondering if anybody has specific examples, or atleast examples where laywers tried to use the fact their their client was religous as a way to get a lighter sentence.

This somewhat relates to

This somewhat relates to your question(s).  Shane Doan, a Canadian hockey player, was accused of using racist language towards French referees while playing a hockey game in Montreal.  He admitted to saying “four French referees in Montreal, what do you expect” but that’s it. This took place a while back, but the issue was recently brought up again when Doan was named captain of the Canadian team that played in the world hockey championships (and won).  The Canadian government, brought this up as a way to get support, it was all quite sad, but that’s beside the point.  When the issue was brought up again, the new defense brought forth from the Doan party, was he was a “good Christian” and wouldn’t use such derogatory language.  I was a bit disappointed that the assumption was made that just because he was a Christian he couldn’t use foul language.

This must number in

This must number in the millions.  Just take a look at case studies of sex abuse among catholic priests or perhaps U.S. history...

Here's one local incident that happened just down the street from me.  It's filled w/ sex, drama and intrigue, just like NBC's thursday night lineup:

The Pastor Bob Story...bow your heads.

Pastor Bob Moorehead used to be pastor of the largest Fundamentalist mega-church in Wash. State-Overlake church. Pastor Bob had nothing but horrible things to say about teh gayz !!

A male parishioner of his came forward claiming that Pastor Bob had felt him up while he was being baptized (A quick little feel of the beans and frank).  Bob denied this and church leaders were quick to condemn the supposed molestation victim as a liar & told him he was no longer welcome at the lord's house.  A second victim came forward w/ the exact same story when he heard about the first.  Again the church shouted "liar" and declared that both the victim and the dark lord himself was responsible for this attack on the house of jesus. A 3rd....a 4th.. and then finally more than 10 parishioners came forward w/ the exact same story, inlcuding one who said he and pastor bob had been fondling each other for years.  (I don't reccomend a game of water polo w/ pastor bob, should you run into him somewhere).  The church used a number of bible passages in an attempt to exonerate bob... including the one where rape requires at least two witnesses and the victim must cry out, etc.

He was never charged w/ any crime for these incidents, but here's where another chunk of the story comes in.. The Seattle Times uncovered that pastor bob had a summer beach home in Daytona Florida (the lord pays well).  Near said beach home was a public restroom that was known for sexual trysts.  Seems our man of god was caught there masturbating w/ another male by an undercover Police Officer in a sting.  Pastor Bob was arrested and charged w/ Lewd Conduct.  A Prosecutor handling this case (Also a christian and known to bob) later dropped these charges against bob declaring as his reason that the UC Policeman could not identify bob when asked and this incident was merely a case of mistaken identity.

The Seattle Times found the undercover cop and asked him to recall the incident, which he had no trouble doing.  They then showed the cop a pic of Pastor Bob and he picked him out right away as someone he'd arrested for Lewd Conduct.  Apparently no one from the Prosecutor's Office had ever asked the cop about the incident and he assumed there had been a guilty plea.  It seems the fellow christian prosecutor lied on official court documents and subverted equal justice for all (He also escaped any punishment).  Meanwhile Pastor Bob's masturbating partner (who had no mega-church to call his own) got short jail time, 6 months probation and the criminal incident permanently attached to his record.

Pastor Bob resigned from said church a short time later still claiming that the victims had all lied, Satan himself had caused all this mess and he absolutely had no desire for male genitalia.

The moral of the story:  Please don't go into the water until at least one hour after you've eaten and never w/ a self loathing Mega-Church Pastor who wants to goose your package.  Amen !

The Shane Doan thing was ridiculous BEFORE I heard this. Now, it's much more ridiculous. Why would it matter at all? It's not like they named him Ambassador to France. They made him captain of a hockey team. A hockey team that had a bunch of French Canadians who, as far as I know, never complained. The fact that government got involved was extreme idiocy. This isn't quite as bad as Teri Schiavo was down south, but it's bad.

As for cases like this...I do know that Ted Bundy tried to use his death row conversion to get commuted to life in jail. When that failed, he was all "I'm going to Jesus" and fearless. Or so it seemed. I saw an interview recorded the night before his execution, conducted by Dr. James Dobson. He seemed more fearful than you'd guess from his words.

AmericanIdle, I read your Pastor Bob story.

Sadly, I don't think it's unusual.

Here is a thread on an Ohio judge that freed a man on bail after a bible quiz.
