Last Gallup Data Make Me Want to Cry
I just found this article. It's a bit too long to post, but here is the link.
And to think that I used to be a dues paying member of that party. I fell dirty and ashamed.

I saw this today on PZ Myers 'Pharyngula' blog, pretty sad results.
I was only a member of that Party because, like everything else in my life, I'd been brainwashed into it. For many years I was apolitical until Emperor Shrub came on the scene. I have come to the conclusion that our system is broken. I have no idea what to do about it.
On edit: doesn't it make sense that the same people who gave us Bush twice are ignorant on a lot of subjects?

That shows why so many right wingers posts I see are barely literate.
How is it possible for 24% of people to think that evolution over millions of years and creation w/in the last 10k years can both probably or definately be true? I will never understand people in this country.
On a positive note, beliefe in the theory has increased from 9% to 14% over the last 25 years. Just another 430 years at that pace

A massive secular overhaul of our system of government similar to when it was created. Update the constitution to modern language and eliminate any possible misconceptions about its meaning. I know, the wording should work fine now but I think it needs some reiteration such as:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Congress has no power to set forth rules regarding religion. Congress has no power to legislate the prohibition of the free exercise of religion. Congress will not legislate with concern for religion. Congress will ignore religion. Good Congress. No, no, bad Congress! BAD CONGRESS! Go to your box!
I think we could use a fourth branch of government. One with similar power to the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Call it the scientific branch. It would have some power over the other branches in that it would stop them from creating stupid laws that don't work. It would be generated from scientists, and have a requirement that each member have at least a master's degree for the entry level elected positions with more stringent requirements for specialized and more influential positions.
Just a thought.
This is why I'm glad to be Canadian. The ignorance and brainwashing in the general population of the US is frightening. American politicians spread propaganda to the citizens that the US is a shinning beacon of what other countries aspire to be, but the truth is, the rest of us look at the US and shake our heads.
I spent a month in Dallas about 9 years ago, and the level and depth of the Christian fundamentalism was so foreign to me, I honestly couldn’t believe it…I hate to say it, but I could almost hear my IQ leaking out of my brain – the people were incredibly nice, but incredibly close minded and oblivious to the levels of delusion and brainwashing they were living in. I had no idea such a society existed, it was so foreign to me after having lived in Canada and spending time in Europe, that Texas was probably the greatest culture shock I’ve ever experienced in my life.
Kudos to those among you who are intelligent and resourceful enough to withstand the almost overwhelming levels of brainwashing you are subjected to, especially those of you in the bible belt…in my opinion your wills are almost heroic to be able to think rationally when Christianity is so deeply entwined in the society and the people.

Maybe it is true... Natural selection doesn't seem to be working on Republicans...
But seriously, that is sad.

It seems to me, I may be wrong, but it seems to me that they worded that poorly, mainly because they refer directly to humans.
I find this graph a bit telling though:
Church dulls the brain! D:

I'll get back to you when I think of something worthwhile to say.
That's crazy man! I don't seem to run into many people who don't believe in evolution... maybe that's because I live in NE America. I'm sure if I moved South, it would be a different story.
JESUS SAVES!!! .... and takes only half damage!
It takes luck, intelligence and courage to overcome brainwashing on that scale. Recovering fundies have to deal with a shattered worldview, loss of their invisible friend, loss of the promise of an afterlife, loss of social support systems and usually loss of friends and family.
One reason I support RRS is to soften the blow so more people can leave fundamentalism. The more out-of-the-closet atheists there are, the easier it will be for others to leave religion. I'm wondering if there might be some critical mass at which point most people will have to seriously confront the absurdities of religion. There may be a huge number of people who walk away.
First we have to be there for those who have been brainwashed. I have a feeling there may be more we can do, but I haven't figured this part out, yet. Please let me know if you have ideas.
My fundy county in California is getting less and less fundy. (It still bugs the crap out of me, probably because I live here and have to contend with people who knew me as a fundy.) I think there may be an exodus of people to the bible belt, but I have no real data for this. A fundy lady I knew took her children and high-tailed it for Texas. I had tried to corrupt her daughter by telling her the Jesus myth had its roots in paganism and was a pagan religion. I told her it was possible--probable, even--that Jesus never existed as a man on earth. I'm sure the fundy mother was thrilled with me.
I also told the home-schooled fundy daughter that she only believed because that was what she had been taught. She absolutely denied this and I couldn't help smiling. Let's see, a home-schooled child that shares her parents' religion. Is there any other explanation? I don't think so, especially in light of how ridiculous the Christian religion is.

Try living in small town Texas. I live in a town with a Pop. of around 1400 people...and we have 5 churches. Everyones favorite question when they meet you is "So, what church do you go to?".
I told on of our neighbors I was an Athiest and she said "You don't actually worship the devil, do you?" I laughed for a solid 10 minutes over that one.
Oh, man. I'm from Dallas, and that is no haven for freethought. Unfortunately for me, I've got to go back to Dallas next week. I've been living in Germany this last year, enjoying the open-mindedness and high average intelligence. I almost laugh when a German tells me they're religious... They have NO idea, haha.
Do You Worship an Evil God?
There is the difference between Texas and Massachusetts. I grew up in a town of 2500 which had 1 church. And other than the reverend's son who I went to school with, I didn't know anyone that went to it.

ROFLMAO!!! That's sooo going in the funny thread.
Nope exactly the opposite. Natural selection can be evidenced by it. In most cases, stupid breeds quicker which means that if smart people do not make dumb people smarter by educating them then smart people are on the endangered list.
Migratory factors including losing scientists to other countries will accelerate this. Very well could be within our lifetimes that the evidence for this is overwhelming. in my opinion.
Regarding the poll, I would like there to be a way to find out how many americans 'understand' the theory of evolution, not how many 'believe'.

That's it. The Republican Party has to go.
