Look for me on the Rational Response Squad's Radio show

ksskidude's picture

Last week I had the honor of being a guest on the RRS with Brian and Kelly. I wanted to speak aboout my experiences as a patient advocate for embryonic stem cell research in Missouri. Certian politicians in MO actaully want to ban and criminalize people who participate in the research. Let me know what you think. I am not sure when they are going to air it, but as soon as I know I will post it.

Awesome. Can I get a sneak

Awesome.

Can I get a sneak question in before the show airs?

Presently, there are a great number of people on the religious 'right' that are against any form of stem cell research. Would you agree that it would be justice if they are refused treatment using any benefits of the research?

I agree

Yes, people who are oppsosed should have to sign a waiver that says none of their tax money will go to Embryonic stem cell research, but then also be willing to waive their rights to be treated as well.  It would solve the problem for them, and for us willing to pay taxes to have such research.

It astounded me how often people would invoke thier god and say that it is wrong and god is against it.  But since I was a part of the actaul campaign in Missouri, I was unable to speak my mind about thier objections.  I would say to them though, that no one knows what god actaully thinks on this issue, and to say so in being disingenious.  I would also argue that Jehovah's Witnesses believe blood transfusion's are a mortal sin, yet they are not trying to legislate their beliefs.  You should check out www.missouricures.com

Welcome, ksskidude!

I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say, ksskidude.

I've said for quite some time that those who oppose stem cell research should ethically refuse any treatment derived from that research.

But don't ya know that they'll be the first ones in line for treatment about the time they (or even worse, their children or parents) are diagnosed with MS or Alzheimer's?

I also am from Missouri and was elated when the stem cell research bill passed.  That turned to horror when it became apparent how dirty political tricks are being used in an attempt to repeal it.

Keep fighting the good fight!

I read the amendment and

I read the amendment and was kind of upset. It wasn't everything that was asked for. It was like some kind of political dance maneuver. Repealing and retrying is the only way to solve it if my opinion counts. lol.

Ethicists are trying to limit science. I'd rather find out if we CAN do everything before we determine whether or not we should.

Darth_josh, you have to remember that this is MISSOURI, not only right smack dab in the middle of the bible belt, but also adjacent to Kansas.  Sometimes we take what baby steps we can get.

One fundy was posting crap on the bulletin board at my Day Job saying that if this thing passed, it was making human cloning a constitutional right.  The scary thing is, she actually believed it.

That's what we deal with.

Oh yes. I know. Could you

Oh yes. I know. Could you even imagine that amendment even getting past commitee in Tennessee?

And we've got Frist that supports it. One of the funniest cartoons ever shows Bill Frist at the doctor's office looking at an x-ray of his spine with the words 'stem cell research' appearing there.

The implication is that was the first sign that he had any backbone at all. lol.

Missouri was tough

The entire year polling showed us the good guys, proponents of stem cell research and somatic cell nuclear transfer were ahead nearly 70-30.  But within the final three months the opponents (the religious right) nearly convinced enough bible beaters and nitwits to vote it down.

Its not over though.  WE are going to have to revote in 08'.  They will get enough people to sign petitions and bring back on the ballot.  It just makes me sick!

By the way, you look somewhat familiar.  Are you a theater-goer?
