my name is mary.
hi, uhm. im sixteen, and a junior at a charter school in texas.
i'm atually at school right now, i was looking around on deviantart, browsing some amazing photography when i noticed on the side an advertisement for this site. usually i ignore such things, but the slogan caught my eye.
"believe in god? we can fix that"
i was curious. i thought without a doubt that i had read it wrong. an actual site dedicated to "bashing" God? no way. i thought at least people could be a bit mature about it, but.. wow. i've read some of the posts and such, and i read the FAQ. and i must say... its disgusting.
i, myself, surprise surprise, am a struggling christian. but by reading the things on your site... i strengthened my faith.
everytime someone comes to me looking for a debate about... evolution for instance, or politics, i get a rush, because i love having the ability to use my knowledge to prove people wrong, and hopefully change their minds so they can learn the truth.
i know for certain, by saying the things that you have said, in the way that you have said them, just makes you all look ridiculous! no offence of course.
there is a certain way of handling such things! insulting people IS NOT proving your point.
i do not believe in "the big bang"
you believe that the universe has expanded into its current state from a primordial condition of enormous density and temperature.. spinning and then...boom. i disagree... completely.
i think atheism was created because people didnt want to believe that there is a higher authority. i believe it is a lack of humility, and far too much pride.
....this wasnt meant to cause anger, im just stating my opinion, as you all have.
saying GOD is anything like fairies, or any other mythotical creature, is absolutely disgusting. atheism is a theory that has not, and will not be proven. on this website you completely ignore the chance that there is a god. you answer the questions in the FAQ like a brainwashed child. your answers arent directed towards the question, you insult and thats all.
people with different beliefs can get along. my best friend, ben, is an athiest. we have indepth conversations and debates about our beliefs, and we act like adults about it.
thanks for your time.
God bless.
-mary.

Why not?
Well, aren't you quite
Well, aren't you quite contrary.
Just as a bit of advice, try not to personalize the things you read here. What is being discussed at this site is belief systems, not the people who hold them (aside from calling the dishonest, dishonest, and the ignorant, ignorant). If you disagree with what you have seen written here you should state your reasons for disagreeing. If you are simply going to personalize what is being said and take offense then you will find conversations less than fruitful in which case there is really no point in discussing in the first place.

OK, right.
Let's start at the beginning; the book of Genesis--a book written by "the elders" of a middle eastern meandering group of sheep herders several thousand years ago.
In it they state that their god, Yahweh, created all that is in 6 days**and then** rested on the seventh.
I would like for you to read that above sentence over & over.
You're entitled to you opinion, but, education is really a wonderful thing. Discerning truth from myth is also valuable. Give it a shot...
EDUCATION! EDUCATION! EDUCATION!

It is not dedicated to bashing god, or did I miss the memo, did you read that in the mission statement? I thought it was about rational thinking and not promoting a more critial analysis of our human condition. I see you said you read "some" of the post, is some really enough to say what you think this site is truly about. What exactly does maturity have to do with facts? I find your religion disgusting. A megalomaniac of a god who punishes people for the sins of the common ancestor, simply because they don't think a poorly written book is fact based?
Hooray debates, why don't you have one here then, lets see how well your knowledge stands up. I would love for you to change my mind. Your last sentence is ridiculous. Thank for saying you believe in stereotyping people, are you racist too? No offense of course.
You are correct insulting people doesn't prove points. I agree with this statement. But if I say no offense, doesn't that mean I didn't insult you.
Um I don't remember the "big bang" being part of the definition of Atheism, do you have the dictionary you got that definition from?
The government is a higher authority than I and I believe in it. I guess that throws your idea out the window.
An opinion based on??? Maybe if you talked to a few people here we can help you understand why your opinion is wrong.
You don't even know the definition of atheism. I for one an am Agnostic atheist, if you present evidence for god then I will follow the evidence. However it is not my burden to prove god doesn't exist, burden of proof is on the one making the positive claim. You claim a god exists now prove it. You have not read enough of the website or you went directly to trollville to find out what people are talking about because, insulting a person and not the argument is a fallacy and it will get you banned from the website. Why not try talking with a few people here before shouting your ill informed opinion about us?
I wonder if your friend Ben, knows your "opinion" on why he is an atheist?
Thanks for your time.
Have a wonderful rational day.

Sounds made up...

No, I am not angry at your imaginary friends or enemies.

What is god?
People who think there is something they refer to as god don't ask enough questions.
Mary - I don't believe you
Mary -
I don't believe you actually even know what atheism is. Unfortunately, until you understand the term I don't think you'll be able to understand much else about a person who is atheist, much less this forum.
An atheist is a person who holds no belief in a god. It's really as simple as that. It has nothing to do with denying a higher authority, as you say, since one cannot deny something that does not exist. Most people here would say that if they were provided with reasonable evidence of a higher being, they would believe. So clearly you haven't delved very deeply into the posts here.
As for myself, I see no evidence and am unable to believe in something that apparently does not exist.
Think of it this way - I see no evidence that Zeus or Demeter exist, do you? Well, it would be rather silly to think they exist if I have no evidence that do. It is the same for the Christian god as well.
On an ironic note, generally when a person ends a sentence with 'no offense', that person realizes they've just said something offensive. Don't apologize if you mean it. Funnily enough, you say:
But then you go on to do just that by calling us ridiculous, brainwashed, immature, etc.
Next time you post on a forum, instead of throwing around your personal opinions why don't you provide information for you beliefs. You claim you like to debate so by all means, bring some facts to the table.
Because you seem to be easily offended by others opinions (not to mention your age) I'd suggest starting in the 'Kill them with Kindness' thread. The others ones might be a bit too rough for you.
Good luck, Mary!

If you are certain that you can defeat someone in a debate about evolution, plz feel free to drop on by and try. We can even set it up so that its a live on-air debate.

Mary, etc, thanks for your
Mary, etc, thanks for your passion and "curiosity". I worry about you young folks, so I went a bit over kill here, but hope this is helpful ....
Just want to briefly throw some unorganized tit tat your way. I am leaving out the "details". I could sent more to your personal "my inbox", at left in this site listings.
.... "believe in god? we can fix that" .... Yeah it would better read , "believe in god of Abraham? we can fix that" , but this is the west where that is sadly the prevailing god concept. Google, Pantheism, Buddhism , Universalists, Unitarianism, ..... don't get stuck in only "god of abe" .... Jesus wouldn't like that ...
And Google, "The Founding Fathers on Religion", etc, etc, heres one, http://www.aynrand.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=6177
Atheists love life too. Atheists are a diverse group, with varying political and social opinions. Atheists as a whole are generally more educated than the religious. Google, "Atheists are smarter".
I strongly disagree with some of my fellow atheists on many things, .... hell, some of them are even damn embarrassing.
We Atheists basically all reject the silly "god of Abraham" concept. The word god is a word with many better definitions.
Buddha's philosophy, an obvious atheist, was nearly exaclty the same as the Jesus one. The bible version of Jesus is an ancient political one. I read Jesus as an early Atheist rejecting the religion of his time. I say Jesus was an atheist ! ! !Atheists are also in awe of this wonderful mystery of existance. Atheists also look up at the stars and into the eyes of a child with amazment and joy and hope for a better world.
I am one of the atheists, who really digs the core message of Jesus philosophy, as the Buddhist do. The Bible is a poor representation of the Jesus Philosophy.
Me no like the god of Abraham concept.
Check out Bill Moyers, "Faith and Reason", http://www.pbs.org/moyers/faithandreason/portraits_mcginn.html
This is pretty good ; Some fellow atheists laughed when I previously posted this 1 hour audio series. I think this is great for people "struggling" with faith and god concepts. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3589165662980911323&q=the+new+revelations&total=1985&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=2
.... gets on about at 20 mins ... the male voice of god is actor Ed Asner, the female voice of god is actress Ellen Burstyn, the human "questioner" is the author Neale Donald Walsch. Google Neale Donald Walsch for more .... an interesting dude ...

Be thankful for ALL our caring ancestors. Jesus and Buddha are so much alike, but the radicals killed Jesus for his philosophy and then the Roman Catholic Church further ruined the Jesus message.
No one knows if a Jesus dude even existed, but the philosophy obviously did .... http://www.rationalresponders.com/a_silence_that_screams_no_contemporary_historical_accounts_for_jesus
Lots of simularity of Jesus and Buddha wisdom ....
I also enjoy debating. Stick around mary, and check out this RRS site fully, it's very educational.
.... Mary mary, quite contrary .... a person who contradicts out of habit or attitude rather than any real objections to the ideas being expressed .... hee hee, just had to tease you a bit, ... keep caring, trust your heart, and be nice to yourself.
You are god, as is me .....

P.S. Here's some RRS quotes I've been collecting to ponder;
Nobody I know was brainwashed into being an atheist.
"In His Service"... you habitually fabricate rediculous nonsense.
"The God of Abraham is a vague, illiterate and ignorant creation of man. It belongs among those stories of easter bunnies, santa claus, fairies and unicorns."
"Why would a creator communicate to 'his' own creation with a book in the first place? It's a bit like the president of verizon calling home by using tin cans and string." RRS author todangst
"So far as religion of the day is concerned, it is a damned fake... Religion is all bunk." -Thomas Edison
"I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature." -Thomas Jefferson
Organised religion is the ultimate form of blasphemy.
"The fact that religion calls itself absolute truth should be enough to reveal that it has none at all." RRS author deludedgod
I used to be a Christian. I got better.
I am an Atheist and dig Jesus too.
Atheism Books.
Folks, Let's leave Mary on
Folks,
Let's leave Mary on the vine to ripen a little. Right now, she is untempered by the sun and elements. She is able to believe, albeit minimally, in what her community is forcing her to believe. Of course, we are going to find her prose a little tart and bitter. She hasn't had time to develop and mature.
Life will hand her disappointments, and the protection of her parents will not last forever. Eventually, Mary will stand in the unforgiving sun known as reality. She will ripen, but she will bruise as well. The promises of her god will not be kept, and she will feel the scorching freeze of realization.
Through these experiences she will develop into an atheist of her own accord. She will recognize the absurdity and hypocrisy of the world she currently inhabits. Only then will she come and provide us proof, through the nectar of prose, of her understanding.
So, this one is too young yet. Let the sun, the weather, time, and the elements do their work. We will welcome her with open arms, but let her naivete shrivel naturally.
By the bye, welcome to the forum, Mary.
"Tis better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven." -Lucifer
Atheism isn't a "created
Atheism isn't a "created belief" like Christianity -- it's a conclusion.
There are an awful lot of inconsistencies internally in Christianity (for example "Thou shalt not kill" in Exodus and then a book later in Leviticus dictating that if you have a slovenly or disrespectful child you should take him to the town square and let the townspeople stone him to death.), as well as broad consistencies with other TOTALLY SEPARATE faiths (the trinity of Hinduism, the "flood myth" of Gilgamesh and other cultures, the creation story of the Sumerians). Why should one be accepted above the others?
As a sixteen year old, you obviously have a lot of growing to do. Don't shut your ears off to observable reality just because some people don't like your mythology. Before you go blanket-discrediting us, at least learn a bit about Atheism first!
