Religious, but ignorant.

I'm not really surprised, but it seems one of the most religious developed nations is also frighteningly ignorant of what they believe.

A very interesting article from the Washington Post exposes the obvious fact that people who are ignorant of religion are more prone to believe in a religion. The abundant un-knowing in such a large population reminds me of the Catholic Church only allowing the bible to be in Latin during the Middle Ages.

It's very easy to manipulate people if you keep them ignorant of something that they believe can cause them eternal pain. They will come back to you since they think you're the only one who can keep them safe.

If people knew more about what they were being told to believe, they would be less prone to mental slavery. They would grow out of their perpetual childhood.

i live in Kansas, and my entire life i've been surrounded by christian-rednecks. they are the kind of christian that may or may not own a bible, but if they do they haven't done any more than skim through it. they only go to church on christmas and easter, and they only pray when tragedy strikes or if they want something really bad, like winning the lottery or their favorite sports team to win. they would stare at you blankly if you tried to discuss the pagan roots of christianity, or the inquisition. and atheism, to them, means devil-worship.

this is partly due to isolation, partly lack of education, partly simple lack of desire to know any better. many of them are good people, some aren't.
