Should be an interesting day tomorrow
I just finished a portfolio for Creative Writing. Due to the theme of this particular portfolio, it was an enticing opportunity to express my dis-belief.
At the end of each portfolio, the class holds a reading so students can present their work to an audience; it is very enjoyable and I always try to participate. The piece I plan on reading (it is actually an excerpt of a much larger missive) lays bare much of what I think about gods and religion and I know there are a few very dedicated Christians and Mormons in the class with directly opposing viewpoints to mine. I do not wish to create a powder-keg though and I am hoping it will remain calm and reserved. I simply want to explain my standpoint on some things.
If I do come under fire though, I know that there are a few like minded cohorts who will back me up. Nothing really to worry about though, as I live in Washington State, which is very "liberal" and has the largest Atheist/Agnostic population of any US State. I can not go to a classroom without running into at least one non-believer and most of the religious people here are accustomed to such a thing. My best friend describes himself as a Secular-Christian (oxymoron, but still very apt) and is very kind.
Cheers!
And thanks to everyone who commented on my first post. I feel very welcome; It has made my day!

I wish you the best. Just
I wish you the best. Just keep your calm, be polite, reasonable and logical. Richard Dawkins is a good example, as is Sam Harris. Maybe you'll be the next one?

Good luck, and hold firm.
Good luck, and hold firm. You should be okay.
Good luck, netsui! Don't
Good luck, netsui!
Don't let 'em get under your skin. If they get nasty, they're hoping you'll get defensive.
Stay rational and good luck!!
Let us know how it goes.

The defensive trap
Not to worry. I used to fall for the defensive trap when I first started to become serious towards my atheism. Not so much anymore!
Thank you for the words of encouragement!
Aim High!
While it would be exciting to be in a position like Dawkins' or Harris', I would rather hope that by the time Dawkins and Harris are finished, we won't need a next one.
Thanks for the kindly words.

Wow. That is one of the most positive message board posts that I've ever read.
