Thank god!
(I know this isn't any thing new in the realm of arguments.. but)
Just found out about the attack this morning in NYC.
The Gov and Mayor are on television thanking god. I believe it was the Gov who said 'thank god no one was killed..." blah blah blah.
So on 9/11 do you say, "thank god only 3,000 people were killed"?
Was god sleeping on 9/11? Did god want 9/11 to happen? Did god not care? Was satan more powerful that day?

Or 6 million Jews, or the
Or 6 million Jews, or the 50 million humans both miilitary or civilian who died worldwide as a result of WW2.
Even outside events like this, humans who claim a god saved them, are merely using very bad logic based on selection bias and sample rate error.
If 1 person on a plane of 300 survives a crash, and everyone else dies, the theist calls it a miracle.
If 299, people survive a pane crash and only 1 dies, they use the same word miracle.
Ok, when does it cease to be a miracle, when half die and half survive?
Truth is in reality worldwide on average, PER YEAR, some 50 to 60 million humans die from everything. Mostly old age, because everyone dies. But also in the womb, childhood desease, famine, accidental, natural disaster, crime and war.
So yea, this horrible logic does not make sense.
Even with death, you always hear the theist say, "They are in a better place, they are with God now."
GREAT, so why the hell are you sad then? If being in heaven with the ulltimate super hero is such a good thing, then there should be nothing to be sad about. It would be like mourning winning the lottery. I especially find this logic vile when it comes to the murder of a child.
God/s don't exist, but if one wants to claim it, I still could not in my right mind call such a being moral with such a spotty selective record.

In all fairness, I doubt
In all fairness, I doubt many people who say 'thank god' are actually thanking god and not just repeating the most commonly used expression for the circumstances. It took me years to deprogram my mind of such expressions when the whole religious question hit me in the face and I chose no religion.
It is definitely annoying though, seeing religion constantly fail the most simple of logical steps.

The other day I got irate about something with a sibling and I said "I swear to god I'll beat the shit out of you"
They laughed and said "I thought you didn't believe in god" to which I replied, "Yep I don't but years of programming still has me saying "god damn it" and "oh god I'm coming""
It is amazing how deep this shit runs in our minds.
