Why Should Atheist Care About Satanism?

mindcore's picture

Why I think Satanism is Relevant to us as Atheists, Skeptics, and Science Activists.

I am obviously paying attention to Satanism.

There are good reasons for this.

Satanism is the only "religion" that I can find that does not believe in the supernatural.

When I was a young boy I tried to dabble with Satanism, but I failed to do so because I believed that there really was a supernatural "magick," I suppose that with a childish mind, one fails to grasp the subtlety of the theatrics of satanic rituals and assumes prematurely that it is real supernatural witchcraft.

I missed this point as a child, just as all who miss this point now are currently children.

I was attracted to Satanism as a source of power and affirmation. I guess much like many use motivational tapes to provide, only in Satanism they don't make shit up like so many motivational speakers do.

No Satanism says life is hard, and rough, and often monstrous.

As someone who was sexually abused I could only concur.

But Satanists are epicureans who say find pleasure where you can, but never let pleasure be your ruler, because you must also be the ruler of all you can.

As a fan of Herr Nitezsche I can only see this worldview with fondness.

I failed as a child to see that Satanist do not believe in magic, or spirits, and I just descended into a fantasy world.

Then I traded one fantasy world for another when I became a christian.

Finally, today as a disciple of reality Satanism has caught my eye again.

Now, let me make myself clear. I am not a Satanist.

I am an atheist, 100% atheistic, with no alleigance to any religion.

I am not a practitioner of any religion.

Any accusations of being a Satanist will be responded to with me cutting and pasting the above statement.

Okay.

But I listen to the Point of Inquiry Podcast, like millions of other people, and they interviewed Peter H. Gilmore, the current Black Pope, the head of the Church of Satan.

Peter H. Gilmore declares on this interview that all true Satanists are atheists!

WHAT!!!!????!!!

All....Satanists....are....atheists.

Turns out to be true. Even the religions founder Anton LaVey made this abundantly clear in his own writing.

LaVey was an ex-carny, and an ex-cop, who wanted to create a religion that was like a carnival (and Satanism is very carnival like at times) but that this religion would hail no bullshit. But instead be a life affirming use of theatrics to enrich their lives.

Wow.

I actually sent an e-mail to Robert M. Price that he should try to do the same with Christianity. Robert obviously finds the theatrics of Christianity inspiring and should, he's a classy guy, a real Patrician. Robert should do as he's doing, use the theatrics for inspiration (incase you didn't know it Robert M. Price, famous atheist, goes to church).

Satanists are no different than Robert M. Price in this regard. They like religious theatrics, they find it inspiring, a creative act that gives them emotional energy.

Fuck yeah!

In Satanic thought; playing air guitar while listening to Ronny James Dio and pretending that you are a Vulcan prince, or Clingon prince if you are more new school, then you are performing a Satanic Ritual.

You are becomming a Clingon Warlord and channeling that power, and neuroscience seems to suggest that this is true.

When you have an active image in your mind your brain makes action activating neurotransmitters.

WEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

So what am I saying, is that there really is one religion, at least, that stands with us against supernaturalism.

This has got my attention.

How about yours.

Not feelin' it.  Even if

Not feelin' it.  Even if you get past the usual negative connotations, the inevitable feeding into the typical theist hysteria, I don't think I could ever attach myself to a group of persons who use a mythical biblical/religious character as a banner, even if in name only.  The whole idea seems pretty silly to me.

Been, there.... done that.

Also I believe most theists see the existence of an entity calling itself, "Satanism" as affirmation of their own delusional beliefs so why in the world would I want to feed into that ?

You do make a good

You do make a good point.

Allow me to make one I think is also good.

I like Goth and Industrial music, I also like old school gangsta rap, like the Geto Boys. Christians have been saying for ages that music makes kids not believe in God. By listening to this kind of music I am feeding into Christian stereotypes.

If I really wanted to be effective I would only listen to music to which no one could ever object.

I also like to wear black, occasionally wear my septum piercing, and I am covered in tattoos. Christians have argued forever that tattoos lead to all kinds of negative paths, and that atheism is probably the worst thing that could happen to anyone.

If I really wanted to be effective, I would spend thousands of dollars to get my tattoos removed, and wear collared shirts, and endure the pain of laser tattoo removal.

I could list so many things that I enjoy, that I see as art that enriches my life, that feed in to christian stereotypes, and they see as confirmation and validation of their dogma that if I stopped it all to make them see atheists in a better light, my life would be very dull indeed.

I think as atheists, we have a rare privilage of enjoying intellectual experimentation with total freedom.

I should also add that

I should also add that Satanism should be interesting to us because it is a purely symbolic religion.

I would argue that with meme theory, that we could eventually see purely symbolic forms of all religions, where they don't believe in the supernatural.

This is suggested in Dennet's Breaking the Spell.

Very true. Theyre religion

Very true. Theyre religion is based on symbolism. They do not believe in the devil Christian's believe in, but in the meaning of the word. Satan being a hebrew word for opponent. They are the ones who oppose all those theistic religions. And I;m an ahteist too, and have been reading more about Satanism. I found myself very connected when i read their bible. No to try and be a satanist, but because i likelearning about different things, and I can tell you that their religion is a very interesting one. They dont believe on anything supernatural, and i share many ideas with them. I was very suprised when  i found that out. The basically believe that you are your own god and I do too. If I do anything, Its toi please myself and grow as a person. Smiling
