A year in review...

Another year! I am sure I am not alone when I say; time goes by way too fast. It reminds me of how quickly a plate of cookies will disappear when placed near a group of 3 year olds Smiling

As for reflecting on 2008 I am not one to dwell on the past but I had an eventful year, one that helped to shape where I am right now and how I will plan the next few years of my life.

-I quit my job of 3 years to pursue a new career * for 2009 this opens up quite a bit of time for me to go back to school. I will be attending a community college for my Associates and if I like school the plan will be to continue on for my bachelors.

-I voted for the first time ever this year * having voted for Obama it is exciting to think about what 2009 will hold for the US (and the world)

-My husband and I paid off all of our debt with the exception of our mortgage * This puts us in a great position financially which will provide me the chance to get back to school.

-I had my gallbladder removed * This doesn't influence 2009 much at all...I really don't miss it Smiling

-My sister "moved in" with us and spent a total of 4 days in our home over those 2 months. She promptly "moved out" * 2009 will continue to  prove to be a year of me trying to keep up with where she is, what she is doing and if she is okay. For those of you that know me, you know the story. I will not enable!

-I dedicated 55 hours to volunteerism in 2008 * For 2009 I am hoping to double this by getting more people involved...perhaps a group of atheists from here in Chicagoland! This depends on how much time I have to dedicate to studying...

A few more things...

-Visit my parents at least 3X in the New Year

-Remain healthy

-Finish reading the 4 new books that I have had sitting next to my chair since July.

-Convince Tracy we MUST visit Bora Bora at least once in our lives...and this should be the year!

-Refinance our home IF the market bounces back

-Plan at least 3 events for RRS Chicago * Spring-Summer-Fall

I wish everyone a fantastic 2009!! Don't let it happen to you, make it happen for yourself   Eye-wink

2008 was my first time

2008 was my first time voting as well. For Obama as well.

I'm so happy you have had a good year. You deserve it.

I hope I can accomplish half of your 2008 list this next year for myself.

lol.

That's one reason I said 'half'.

I might just go to the doctor for something besides an injury this next year. It might be nice to visit and just say, "Nothing is wrong, but I thought I'd check in to say hi."

While voting for Obama,

While voting for Obama, which breaks down a needless barrier, which never should have been there, would be like ellecting the first open atheist as president, what matters is not color of skin, sex, or sexuality, but results.

If I can tweak what Martin Luther King said, "I would like to see the day when a human is judged, not on their party or religion or nationality or sex or sexuality, but their results"

Unfortunately that doesnt fit well on a bumper sticker.

Obama only proves that many are getting over labels, but it does not mean that humans have gotten completely passed them. I would hate to see if Obama screwed up as badly as Bush(not that he can) but if he did, that because of his race or religion people would blindly treat him like the greatest thing since sliced bread, much like fundies treat Bush.

Obama should be treated like any politician or president. When he does well, we recognize that, when he screws up, we point that out as well.

I have for a long time hated the claims of "first this" or "first that" in regards to human labels. The bottem line is that a person as an individual will either prove they can do the job or will screw up. What they claim to believe or what is between their legs is irrelevent to what they produce in the end.

If Bush can get ellected by merely claiming that Jesus is his favorite philosopher then that is just as bad a voting for Obama simply because he is black. I voted for Obama because of his positions, not the "first" or his label or his color. He has a hard road considering what was dumpped in his lap so for that lattitude is important. But I will defend dissent and Obama should be open to the same scrutiny as JFK or Jefferson or Adams.

Obama proves that we can get beyond labels, but labels are not what are important, results are.

He never said, "I". He said

He never said, "I". He said he wanted his four children to grow up to know equality. I suffer no delusion thinking I could ever see a world devoid of hatred caused by religion. But, I would like my children to have the chance.

While his dream became a goal for an entire movement, our dream is denigrated by people that should be sharing in it.
