Does Santa need to Diversify?

It is Christmas time again! And as we all know, with that come many fun traditions ~ including the visit from Santa Claus!

I was outraged to imagine, as it was brought up to me on Facebook, that Santa may have all male reindeer in his herd. I would report that to the EEOC however, I have come to find out that Santa’s reindeer are likely not all male. No, they didn’t go through ‘a change’. Apparently, due to some breed characteristics, the antler-brandished flight crew should be correctly categorized as mixed gender. Let me share with you some wisdom from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game:

“while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer, however, retain their antlers until after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen..... had to be a female. "

Now, notice this snippet attempts to make it a fact that male reindeer couldn’t possibly be pulling Santa’s sleigh because they lose their antlers before Santa takes to the skies. Of course this makes sense as his reindeer, depicted in all of those ‘proof photos’, have antlers

100 Reasons Why Climate Change Is Natural - Daily Mail

1) There is “no real scientific proof” that the current warming is caused by the rise of greenhouse gases from man’s activity.

2) Man-made carbon dioxide emissions throughout human history constitute less than 0.00022 percent of the total naturally emitted from the mantle of the earth during geological history.

3) Warmer periods of the Earth’s history came around 800 years before rises in CO2 levels.

4) After World War II, there was a huge surge in recorded CO2 emissions but global temperatures fell for four decades after 1940.

5) Throughout the Earth’s history, temperatures have often been warmer than now and CO2 levels have often been higher – more than ten times as high.

Purpose of Christmas response begins (also Ray Comfort the liar)

I've got two new posts up tonight, the first is my opening shot at Pastor Rick Warren and The Purpose of Christmas.

The second post is long overdue and is a summation covering the Ray Comfort plagiarism in his Origin of Species bullshit.

My opening post here about The Purpose of Christmas is here.

The RRS thread on Comfort plagiarizing is here.

I turned off commenting for this blog post.  If you want to post comments, please do so at The Purpose of Christmas or WOTMwatchdog.

No Atheists in office in N Carolina

No Atheists in NC City Council.

ASHEVILLE — North Carolina's constitution is clear: politicians who deny the existence of God are barred from holding office.

Opponents of Cecil Bothwell are seizing on that law to argue he should not be seated as a City Council member today, even though federal courts have ruled religious tests for public office are unlawful under the U.S. Constitution.

Voters elected the writer and builder to the council last month.

“I'm not saying that Cecil Bothwell is not a good man, but if he's an atheist, he's not eligible to serve in public office, according to the state constitution,” said H.K. Edgerton, a former Asheville NAACP president.

Article 6, section 8 of the state constitution says: “The following persons shall be disqualified for office: First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God.”

Rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution trump the restriction in the state constitution, said Bob Orr, executive director of the N.C. Institute for Constitutional Law.

“I think there's any number of federal cases that would view this as an imposition of a religious qualification and violate separation of church and state,” said Orr, a former state Supreme Court justice.

I make little girls cry.

I was in rare form last night. I took on a whole team of Christians and sent them packing. It was a sight to behold to say the least.

When I arrived at Union they had their booths already set up on both sides of the park. I sat down directly in front of the one on the west side of Union Sq South, and immediately one of them in their yellow smocks came up to me and asked if I would like one of their pamphlets. I replied "No thank you. I don't believe in God."
They love that answer a lot.

And that began what was probably a 40 minute discussion with this girl. Then her coworker friend came over, both of these girls were from Alabama and probably 19 years old or so. And her friend, let's call her Amy (because I forgot her name), was total cult member status. Trained with the best of 'em to repeat phrases like "God made it that way," and "I don't believe in fantasies. I believe in Jesus!" She even, at one point said, during a discussion of a good father going to hell, and a murderer going to heaven, that this was a beautiful thing!
Anyhow, this was all as usual. No new exciting arguments from their side.

Denialism: How Irrational Thinking Hinders Scientific Progress, Harms the Planet, and Threatens Our Lives.

I found the recent appearance of Michael Specter on The Daily Show to have quite a few correlations to the efforts of atheists to help humanity abandon our unscientific religious past.

I bought my winter gift to myself...

Do you do that?  Do you buy yourself a gift during the Christmas season and call it a Solstice gift or a Saturnalia gift?  Whatever you call it... do you do it?  And if so, what are you getting for yourself this year?

I haven't bought any new books in a while, and decided to get a few good deals off my wish list.  I was able to buy books used for a huge discount.  Check these deals out...
