Disciplining Children

Children who are smacked by their parents may grow up to be happier and more successful than those spared physical discipline, research suggests.

A study found that youngsters smacked up to the age of six did better at school and were more optimistic about their lives than those never hit by their parents.

They were also more likely to undertake voluntary work and keener to attend university, experts discovered.

Hopefully this means we can get back to a more focused, less selfish society. Children are, after all, animals and it's very difficult to explain to a young animal succinctly were it is going wrong without some physical discipline. No more idiotic 'Time Outs' or bartering for good behavior.

Oh, and bring back National Service.

Scaring the Christians

So yesterday evening at Union Square I lost it. I was there by myself watchin' Skater Bob's bag while he skated around the park, and these blond Christian people came from behind me and started in on this black man sitting next to me. They asked him the last time he'd been to church and if he'd ever heard of Bla-bla Church of Times Square, or something.

It was two of those typical white, suburban, southern, middle age mothers and they had like 3 or 4 kids with them, ages 14 to 17, something like that, and they were all standing over this older black man next to me, treating him like a poor soul. I sat there listening to them getting all worked up, watching these adults demonstrate to these kids how to spread their misinformation to the weak. I saw a couple of the kids looking at me out of the corner of their eye. I know they noticed my tattoos, and that I could overhear them. This went on for like 10 miniutes. Then Bob skated up, and I was trying to control myself, and I handed him a handful of God is Fakes, and he immediately started giving them to the ladies, and then he skated off. Without even looking at what he gave them they looked at me and said "How are you? Are you interested in hearing about the love of Christ?" or something along those lines, and I let go.

Happy New Year!

We've gone around the sun again!  Just like we do everyday (see my follow up post if you're not following)... but I wont be a debbie downer... Happy New Year!!

I hope everyone gets what they want out of this coming year.  What resolutions will you be making?  What resolutions do you think you'll give up on in 2 weeks?

Barefaced lies of 2009

"Death Panels" - Betsy McCaughey misrepresented a provision (since dropped) that merely called for Medicare to pay for voluntary counseling sessions to help seniors make end-of-life care decisions, such as designating a health care proxy, choosing a hospice or writing a living will. McCaughey twisted that into "a required counseling session" that would "tell them how to end their life sooner."

Socialized Medicine - Several groups and politicians claimed that the major health care bills in Congress called for a single-payer system like Canada’s, under which all citizens have health insurance provided by the government, or even a system like Britain’s, where doctors and hospitals are employed by the government.

Breast Cancer Massacre - One TV spot claimed that "300,000 American women with breast cancer might have died" if our health care system was like England’s. The ad’s conservative sponsor cited the American Cancer Society as a source, but the cancer society never used such a number and an ACS epidemiologist called the ad sponsor’s calculations "really faulty.

False Fingerpointing - Obama falsely claimed that an insurance company was responsible for the death of an Illinois cancer patient whose coverage was canceled because he hadn’t reported gallstones. "They delayed his treatment," Obama said, "and he died because of it."

Why do we exist? Is incoherent.

I was tempted to write an essay, but I don't feel like going to the trouble of it with an entertainment system. Fortunately, it doesn't require one. This is very simple.
Before you can ask why, you must at least know what. Where, when, how, and even who (what, personified) can be helpful, but aren't inherently necessary, yet they can be depending on the why question.
To ask: Why is the sky blue?; you must first know that the sky can be blue at various times. If you don't know that the sky is blue, then the question is assuming that the sky is blue. In fact, the sky is not blue, it is black. But it appears to be blue to our eyes, and that is sufficient to ask why it is blue.
Life exists. We know it does. But we DON'T know exactly WHAT life is. 100,000 years of human history, and we still don't have a definition that fits all life, and only life. How then, can anyone ask why, when they don't even know what?

Why did no one mention this? Treaty of Tripoli

Treaty of Tripoli

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian Religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of  Musselman; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan Nation it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

Yay! Not. A. christian. Nation!

Live Video Chat Party December 25th

On December 25th I will maintain a tradition I started a few years ago, celebrating Christmas day with nonbelievers via webcam, and you're invited!  I'll be joined by longtime RRS moderator and friend Shaunphilly and his girlfriend Seana, who was a Christian before she met Shaun.  Christmas can be a depressing day if you're a non-believer, especially if you feel alienated or unwelcome at festivities of a more religious nature.  We look forward to bringing together a large group of non-believers who want to hang out, blaspheme, and exchange stories of our religious past.  This is a gathering in both live text form and video format.  We encourage you to hook up your webcam as we can have up to 6 people on webcam at once.  Christians are welcome to visit as well!

You'll need an account with http://www.stickam.com If you don't have one, get it now.  It's free!

The party will happen in this room: http://www.rationalresponders.com/rrs_webcam_room
