Dr. Zach from the Evolution 101 Podcast
Submitted by mindcore on March 23, 2008 - 9:36am.Hey Everyone,
There is a new podcast episode up, with an interview with Dr. Zach the host of the Evolution 101 podcast.
Its a great episode.
It also has segments on the science of marijuana and 9-11 conspiracy theories.
As usual it can be found at:
http://mindcore.podbean.com
I also have a rant on the intelligencia and politics from our own Permenent Defendent, though he goes under a different handle on the podcast.
In fact I'm interested in having more RRS voices on the podcast, so let me know if you're interested.

Response to Vox
Submitted by kellym78 on March 22, 2008 - 4:31pm.Alright - I had posted this as a comment under my previous blog post, but it's too damn long to not make it separate. So, without further ado...my response to his response to my response to The Irrational Atheist.
Actually, we're only supposed to make sure you have heard the Gospel, if you're not inclined to listen, we're permitted to shake the dust from our sandals and move on in good conscience. Moreoever, I never claimed to be a particularly good Christian, the reason I'm less annoying than the door-knocking fundamentalist who wants to talk to you about Jesus is because I care less about your fate. My libertarianism pretty much goes to the bone.
I prefer your more subdued form of proselytization, but I think that the bible clearly indicates that as one of the “elect,” you should in fact feel sorrow for the fate of our heathen souls. People like Paul even wept for the lost. At any rate, this is a trivial point that is not written out plainly as a command, so I won’t press it further.
My Friend Captain Caveman
Submitted by mindcore on March 22, 2008 - 12:44am.Rolling like a truck tire,
The time is here to burn religion down on the pyre.
With your words I'm no longer tired.
May you never retire.
Tellin the truth,
Gettin called aloof,
Like this is a fake spoof,
But we still raise the roof!
My Great Friend Captain Caveman
I write this now with the permission of my beloved comrade of whom the title is named. He is a brother to me as much as my biological siblings. He and I share much, and always will.
When I met my brother Captain Caveman it was at a party given by a bull rider.
That’s right, a party given by a bull rider.
I was a 16 year old goth prince of darkness. A tormented Satanist who made evil love to the songs of Nine Inch Nails and the Cure. Oh and the love I made then often still makes me yearn for fucking!
My girlfriend and I were at this party. She was a naughty girl and had often resisted my satanic advances, but was at last mine.
There was a guy there who looked like Encino Man.
Encino Man is a movie which stars Pauly Shore, and is about a caveman that was thawed out of ice and becomes stoner -skater extraordinaire in Encino, California.
This Encino Man bastard manhandled my woman’s buttocks.
That’s right he was playing with my woman’s ass, and she was letting him.
She was very naughty.

On Explaining the Supernatural by Metaphor
Submitted by Archeopteryx on March 22, 2008 - 12:01am.Since coming to this site, I've frequently made posts about the intellectually futile practice of explaining theological concepts through metaphor. So many times have I found myself talking about the uselessness of metaphors in discussions about god and spirits that I thought maybe I should join the ranks of the Rational Responders who write blogs to avoid having to retype what they've already said a thousand times.
So listen. Attempting to explain or understand god through metaphors is an exercise in delusion with some clumsy smoke and mirrors involved. Don't do it. Don't let it be done to you.
A metaphor used properly does not relay anything true, nor does it provide a definition, nor an explanation. It is a rhetorical device that draws a purely superficial relationship between two understood items so that one or both can be admired in a novel way. It is a play on perception.
For example, the following is a metaphor used properly:
"The sun was a bauble in a tree."
When we hear this expression, we immediately understand that the sun is not actually a bauble, nor is the bauble a sun. It takes almost zero thinking for us to get that far. Since the speaker obviously did not mean this literally, we must take the next logical step and ask ourselves: "What did he mean by that?"
Through our knowledge of the sun and of baubles, we can ultimately infer a superficial relationship that exists between the sun and a bauble, namely the way they look in relationship to a tree when viewed a certain way.
Feelin a Little Loony
Submitted by mindcore on March 21, 2008 - 1:02am.Okay, I was trying to dream up something clever to write for you guys right now but its 10 til midnight and I'm trying desperately to get my shit together.
So I guess this is just going to have to be a sleepy, this is what is going on in my life.
Okay, first thing first. The best podcast on the internet is:
http://dawnanddrewwp.podshow.com/
This is the Dawn and Drew show, its not my typical thing. Its not a science or atheist show, but it is so awesome!
If you are thinking about killing yourself, this show will save your life. Its so good!
Today I interviewed DJ Grothe from Point of Inquiry for the podcast. I also interviewed Rebecca Watson from he Skeptics Guide to the Universe Podcasts and skepchick.org.
I also interviewed Jesee Hyde who wrote the cover article of the current Dallas Observer Evolution article.
Oooh-ooh and last but not least Zach Moore, the podcaster of the awesome Evolution 101 podcast.
So I have four awesome interviews, with four amazing people, and now I need to hurry up and post 4 SHOWS!!!!!!
I am going to a party at 9 eyes tattoo this weekend, this is the classiest tattoo shop I have ever seen.
I am also tired and really in Love with my AWESOME wife!!!!
My wife is like a priestess of Loki, a goddess of Chaos.
She fills me with jackolantern fire,
It gives me fury and joy all at once.
She makes me Caesar,
She is my greatest source of joy.

What!?
Submitted by mindcore on March 18, 2008 - 6:42am.So I find myself at the hipster coffee shop Brazil in the Deep Ellum area of town getting ready to go to 9 Eyes Tattoo studio and schedule my next tattoo.
The brain and crossbones that was the love child of Michael Bishop and myself. The logo of the Mindcore: Shockjock of Science Podcast.
Thats how stoked I am about doing this, that I am getting a logo tattoo like some kid dreaming about how his punk band is destined for legendary status like the Misfits or the immortal Black Flag!
I feel like I did when I was a kid in a punk band.
What do you want me to say?

Reflections on My Life Right Now
Submitted by mindcore on March 17, 2008 - 7:49am.I’m a senior now in college. I have less than a year to finish if I don’t fuck up.
I am happily married to a great woman, who is the only woman who could ever be my wife.
The pod cast is going extremely well. Its been going for about a month and a half and if I’m analyzing the listening patterns and statistics that the website gives me correctly I have about 300 regular listeners. That’s up from about 200 regular listeners in the beginning of February.
With those kind of numbers the natural progression for me is to keep doing it.
300 people are literally coming and listening to half an hour to an hour of me and my friends talking about science!
So far its been a great adventure and the biggest high I’ve had in years.
With 300 regular listeners it seemed the next natural progression was advertising.
I’m still figuring that out.
I have 2 clients right now , Evolvefish.com and Zeus comics.
Bawls energy drinks has told me that they are interested in being a corporate sponsor of the pod cast.
Today I have an ad appointment with 9 eyes tattoo studio which is all but already shook on.
But for these successes and others that I am not mentioning, there have been at least half a dozen attempts of me to make a sale.
Most people in Dallas who own businesses seem to not know what the hell a pod cast is.
