Atheism and religion in the News XXVI
Submitted by Zombie on February 28, 2008 - 1:08am.Once again, more news. Fall of the House of Bush--A Book Review
A new books looks at the role of christian fundamentalism in the Bush white house.
Although most Americans regard September 11 as the single event that changed the world, Craig Unger would argue that the 2000 presidential election served as a convergence point of certain groups of people who helped create what he calls “the greatest foreign policy disaster in American history—one that could result in the end of American global supremacy.”In an eloquent and fascinating study of the Neoconservatives, the Christian Fundamentalists and their presidential candidate, George W. Bush, Unger reveals their policymaking role in the Middle East.
Today’s Neoconservatives were originally New Left intellectuals who came out of the sixties’ antiwar and counterculture movement as angry individuals who either felt rebuffed socially or professionally and/or were attracted to the hawkish anti-communist dogma of Democratic Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson.

Your Life is a Love Story
Submitted by mindcore on February 27, 2008 - 8:22am.Everyone’s Life is a Love Story
That’s really the way I see it.
Not just romantic love, but love for what you do. Passion in life for me is life at its fullest, the good faith of Sartre. Nothing is more life affirming than trying to love what you do.
When you love what you do you can somehow feel more, the air fills your lungs with a certain ballet that it lacks when you dread what you do.
For me this is life.
Nothing supernatural is necessary to take life by the balls in this way.
Its just to really treasure the highly limited time that you have in this world, the seizing the day becomes a steamy romance of life.
I love my life.
I treasure it, I try to see things happen by my own hands.
I don’t do this because I think I’m better than anyone, but rather because I wish everyone would do the same.
That everyone would live with passion, that would be a world worth living in.
But the thing is that I believe that we do this to a certain extent unconsciously.
If you live to get home and watch the newest episode of Heroes or Survivor on your TV or computer that’s the love story of your life right now.
If you live for your kids, that’s the love story of your life right now.
I think its what happens regardless. But like any good love affair, it could always be more intense, more passionate, more arousing, and more rewarding.

Atheism and religion in the News XXV
Submitted by Zombie on February 27, 2008 - 3:55am.And yet more news. Peace in Pakistan?
The rout of the fundies in Pakistan’s recent election seems to have given hope to that violence-torn country.
Sinking back in his armchair, Maulana Shuja ul-Mulk strokes his thick beard with one hand and the fluffy tail of a small toy dalmatian with the other. 'We were surprised by the results,' he admits from a supporter's home in the small rural western Pakistani town of Mardan, 'but we believe in democracy.'Whether the claim is true or not, the hard political reality is that Mulk and his hardline religious party are now out of power. In the 2002 election, he and scores of other ultra-conservative clerics swept into government in Pakistan's turbulent North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) on a tide of anti-Americanism and resurgent religious enthusiasm, vowing to impose Islamic law. But in last week's national and provincial polls, voters backed secular and liberal candidates and evicted the ruling alliance of religious parties.

School daze, golden rule days.
Submitted by darth_josh on February 27, 2008 - 12:42am.Every year across the country, we hear of school boards' desires to build new schools due to the growing number of students and the need for smaller class sizes.
A new school building for an average city can be upwards of $10,000,000 US. The construction costs, land acquisition, and interest accrual all add their bits to the initial price tag. The locality and state are in charge of the upkeep of the school past the construction with some grants from the federal ‘government’.
After the new school building has been constructed, the old one tends to sink into disrepair, become ‘storage’ or occasionally it is sold to the public. Sometimes the school district will use part of it for administrative tasks. Often these buildings were well-kept and needed only occasional repairs when they were used. Rarely have I witnessed a school district merely making an addition to an existing building unless it was an athletic field or an ‘alternative education’ building (which I do not plan to address in this diatribe).

The Jesus Mythicist Position: Revised 2008
Submitted by Rook_Hawkins on February 25, 2008 - 4:54pm.The Jesus Mythicist Position: Revised 2008
By Rook Hawkins
(1) A Brief Introduction to the Revised Article
About a year and a half ago, I started a campaign to educate people about Jesus mythicism. When I had first started working on the campaign I was not as well prepared as I am now. I have to chalk that up to inexperience. When somebody says “a lot can happen in a year”, I will consider what they have to say, because they aren’t kidding. A lot has happened in a year and a half that I felt a revision of this article was a necessity.
