At least one industry in Sydney is expecting good things from world youth day.

I've got tears in my eyes from laughing so hard after seeing this article.

To understand why and possibly even share in my amusement, you will have to let me explain the current atmosphere here in Sydney at the moment in reaction to WYD and the reasons why.

The horce racing industry is pissed as hell (the main church service is being held at sydney's biggest racetrack).  All companies in the CBD are going on skeleton staff during that week if they can afford it.  Workers are pissed due to the road closures throughout the CBD.  The hotel industry is pissed as they put aside heaps of rooms and less than 1/10th of which have been booked for it due to the catholics pushing for Sydney residents to take in guests for free to keep prices down.  The catering industry is expecting hell after they saw what happened to the hotels and are now expecting all pilgrims to bring their own food rather than buy anything.  People who live anywhere near where any events are happening are pissed due to road closures that are lasting over a week with no consultation, plus in one case the destruction of a park and removal of its trees to provide free-er passageways for those on foot.  The sydney city and surrounding suburbs councils are pissed as the state has used new anti-terror protection laws to take control out of the local council hands for all suburbs involved.

Seriously ... NOBODY is happy about the bullshit going on except for ...

World Youth Day 'will be a boost for sex industry'

THE sex industry is expected to be blessed with an increase in customers thanks to the most unlikely of sources - World Youth Day.

A report by Industry analysts IBISWorld predicted the 2008-09 financial year would see strong growth for brothels, strip clubs and prostitutes, primarily on the back of a marked increase in tourism levels to Sydney as a result of the Catholic Church's World Youth Day.

The only good that came of

The only good that came of having World Youth Day in Toronto was those tacky bus passes with the Pope on them.

Paul.

"'My dear,' Madame Delbene replied, 'the universe runs itself, and the eternal laws inherent in Nature suffice, without any first cause or prime mover, to produce all that is and all that we know; the perpetual movement of matter explains everything: why need we supply a motor to that which is ever in motion? The universe is an assemblage of unlike entities which act and react mutually and successively with and against each other; I discern no start, no finish, no fixed boundaries, this universe I see only as an incessant passing from one state into another, and within it only particular beings which forever change shape and form, but I acknowledge no universal cause behind and distinct from the universe and which gives it existence and which procures the modifications in the particular beings composing it... the absolute contrary holds... We need not fret if we find nothing to substitute for chimeras, and above all let us never accept as cause for what we do not comprehend something else we comprehend even less." - Marquis de Sade, Juliette, pg. 43.
