Atheist gender question

What is your theory why there are apparently so many more atheist males than females?

Obviously there has to be a solid, reasonable conclusion.   Or is it a perceived misconception?

Another question I've

Another question I've wondered about is why doesn't the feminist movement not attack religion for being enslaving to women? Women are supposed to be independent minded, unafraid and masters of their own sexuality. Religion seems to create the antithesis of a liberated woman. The feminists will attack government, business, school, etc... if they find they are repressive to women's freedom. But the feminist movement is largely silent about religion and it's role in oppressing women. Any ideas?

Taxation is the price we pay for failing to build a civilized society. The higher the tax level, the greater the failure. A centrally planned totalitarian state represents a complete defeat for the civilized world, while a totally voluntary society represents its ultimate success. --Mark Skousen

What browser are you using

What browser are you using Shelley?

I see that we've turned to a new page in the thread and the format is ok, but the previous page is still having severe problems calculating the right margin to fit to screen on IE7 apparently because the thread contains a lot of embedded quotes.

In fact in the last few days I've noticed a fair amount of pages with the same problem, and using several machines (though all running IE7).

As regards the thread subject - in my own experience I've met probably an equal number of male and female atheists and with a huge divesity of personalities and views within each group, so that no discernible difference could be deduced based on their stated atheism. When it comes to publishing their views however, or hopping up on rostrums to advertise them, then - like in almost every other field of interest, it is traditionally still the testicled ones that do most of the hopping, shouting and publishing.

roflmao last time I did that sort of thing, I was in high school, and it was a scramble because it was a Senior surprise moment and I'd gone to bed and wearing nothing but my panties.

anyways, with the topic at hand, it could easily be a case of men being more willing to say what comes to mind, rather than taking time to consider consequences. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just that is the way guys go about things due to time being a factor.

Well, I don't want to oversimplify something that we haven't even established is true yet, but...

Religion clearly appeals to a Romantic approach to life rather than a Realist one (One might even say at the expense of the realist approach, as it cannot provide this option).

What I am supposing is this question:  Are women more susceptible to a Romantic approach to life than men ?

Alternate fiction, (not of a theological nature) as can be found in film & literature, would seem to suggest this.

I fully endorse IAGAY's last

I fully endorse IAGAY's last comment, whatever it was about!

My sister had the misfortune to be educated for a while by penguins - you know, the ones with the rosary beads. When it came to "personal hygiene lessons" (as they were euphemistically called) the girls were told that tampons were a despicable protestant plan to raise the libido of good catholic girls and lead them into sin and damnation.

I believe the village shop's stocks were depleted within an hour of school's close that day.

I was a persistant heretic

I was a persistant heretic in regards to what the Mother(ship) Church told me was right and proper, even though I believed in some of the drivel at the time. That just didn't change the fact my mother was the one who determined what was bought at the grocery store and pharmacy. Buggy in Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood was pretty much the sort of woman my mother is.

Or did I misunderstand what you meant? Eye-wink

Anyway, in all seriousness, to the OP: In socio-linguistics class (an elective I took while studying English at the University) I learned that women are more likely to attain the dialect of social groups that are closer to the ruling class of society, whereas men are more likely to embrase the dialect of their immidiate peers. That is, for example, British working class women in London will speak less Cokney than their male peers, and move closer to the dialect of upper class Britian (RP, which stands for Recieved Pronunciation, the Technical term for Oxford-Snob-speek). We discussed the significance of these statistics in class, and obviously, not being sociologist or psychologist we didn't know, but it was an interesting discussion, which brought up many of the same points seen in this thread.

On an interesting side note, my ex-girlfriend, who is as girly as they come, and who also studied English at the University, like me, found RP to be the most beautiful form of English, and even shunned other British dialects, especially Cockney, and other lowerclass forms, all dialects that I find very charming, and have tried to master myself. It was great fun poking fun at her for being a snob, after I learned of these statistics.

I think you misunderstood what she meant. the type of girl she's describing is the fangirl sort, those rather daft sorts that shriek and giggle when a cute boy smiles at one of them, the kind that have parties with their bestest friends for life and put on makeup and frilly rags. Well, that's the kind of girl I presume she's talking about, and if so, it's really not a shame.

I beg your pudding, nutx! Not a bad movie, even though Sandra Bullock was in it.

My own mother however wouldn't have been out of character at all had she got a lead in Harold and Maude - in the latter role, of course.

Help yourself. I share my pudding freely. Nevertheless I refuse to acknowledge any movie in which a bunch of cackling hens exclaim "Ya Ya" in unison.

You're obviously suffering

You're obviously suffering from "cackling hen" syndrome. Train yourself to see beyond the cackles, feathers, beaks and unfortunate toilet practises. Less as poultry, in other words, and more as lives operating within social conventions that at once confine them while inspiring their rebellion. They'll be happier for it, and you'll get more eggs out of it. Where can you go wrong?

I calls it like I sees it. It's already been pointed out by several people here that women, intentionally or not, work to maintain those social conventions as much as men do. Cries of "sisterhood" and "equality" ring hollow when I hear women claim that they should embrace the power of their vaginas to exploit mens desire to get said vagina for personal gain, be that a bigger tip (no pun intended), a promotion, or some heavy lifting. I have nothing but respect for women who's motto is "Fuck it, I'll do it myself", but until I see more of that and less of "liberated" women waiting for the man to ask for the date, or not saying thank you when I hold the door as if that's my role rather than simple courtesy, I will maintain my position.

Literally?
