Religulous makes it to the top 10 on just 500 screens. Not bad.
That's $3.5 million since Friday and in limited release. By comparison, Kirk Cameron's Fireproof did about twice as much business last weekend with more than 800 screens and Expelled opened with just 2.8 million, despite opening on twice as many screens as Religulous. The production budget was 2.5 million, so it's already well on its way to breaking even (I can't find marketing costs figures, but they're likely to be comparable with the production budget). It isn't unreasonable to think that an expanded release will make some serious money and convince the folks who run the studios to try a little old fashioned plagiarism.
"The whole conception of God is a conception derived from ancient Oriental despotisms. It is a conception quite unworthy of free men."

The only part that sucks is that Religulous is not yet in Wichita. I'll check and see if we're one of the places that will receive it this Friday, vice last Friday...but somehow I'm not optimistic.
Oh, well...I suppose there's always DVD.
