Glory of God.
I still don't understand why christians keep spouting out quotes about god's glory.
Why does a perfect being need / desire / accept glory?
Better yet, many christians believe that god is most glorified when you praise him while things are crashing down around you. Or so I infer this from observation.

Well, of course it's not about what God needs at all, is it? It's about what Man needs. I would...postulate that perhaps this idea comes from a need for a man in dire trouble to take attention off of himself and his own situation and focus it on something else. Something bigger and grander. Something that...transports him away from his own troubles...and effectively exhonerates him from the responsibility to do something towards remedying his problems. IT's kind of a childish response. Kind of like a child who's had all their toys taken away as punishment by Daddy. So if you're really, REALLY nice to Daddy and praise him and tell hin how wonderful he is...maybe he'll give the toys back?
I don't know...it's just psychobabble, but it's the best I've got.
I was actually trying to think of the name of the guy in the Bible that God kept taking stuff away from to test him. He eventually lost everything...his home, his wives, his children (all killed, btw)...but nothing God did to him could make him turn against God. Hmmm....I know some governments that would LOVE to get a handle on that kind of mentality!
The story is among the oldest in the bible and probably was inherited from Assyria or Babylon. The whole idea of loving a god who kills your children is fucking laughable. I'm sure some childless priest looking to make a point wrote this crap. There's nothing of the parent about it.
It also makes me wonder what the glory of god is - by what standard it's measured. Glory. It's a stupid word that probably made more sense when no regular person had ever had a bath and pulled on a clean set of underwear. I can't imagine a god would want his glory restricted to our pathetic ability to project it. When you think about it, all religions are so hamstrung by the limitations of human conception they pull the rug out from under the idea of heavenly inspiration. You'd expect god to be impressive beyond telling but the language, the concepts, the structure of the thing is humanly mundane and humanly brutal.
God is the worn-out projection of primitive people. The sooner we stop looking at him in the rear view mirror and start focusing on the road ahead, the better.

Christians call it "God testing our faith in him". when they say that I find it quite unnerving, for it sounds like they are almost thanking God for their misfortunes...thank you master, may I have some more? If that isn't masochism I don't know what is.
All forms of tampering with human beings, getting at them, shaping them against their will to your own pattern, all thought control and conditioning is, therefore, a denial of that in men which makes them men and their values ultimate.

I have just started talking to a kid my age who has the mindset that when god is making bad thing happen to people, you should praise him!
What really gets me is that people put all their eggs in one basket - the afterlife.

God and Satan are debateing on absolute whorship , Satan (the name means 'tempter') keeps conning god into screwing over Job Yet Job while being screwd is still loyal to god.
The lesson we learn from this bible story is 1} God can be out witted, conned and toyed with. 2} Satan is smarter and more powerfull then god.3} Satan is never punnished for his coniving but good loyal Job is. 4) it is safer to whorship Satan then God. 5} Job is a nerrowminded asshole with limited use for reality and a total Masochist. 6} early story tellers liked makeing Satan smarter then God.

I wonder what CPS would do to a parent if it tested it's child like the alleged god "tests" us?
Say a dad has two boys, and one miss behaves, would it be ok to kill the child or maybe starve him to death or inject the boy with aids or H1N1 or shoot his brother in front of him and say, "Next time it will be you". Are these acceptable "tests"?
The fact is that horrible things happen, because they do. Pretending that there is a magic super hero and a magic villain does nothing to stop horrible things. What does stop horrible things are things like doctors, police, education, technology.
