Language, PC bull never takes into account CONTEXT!
Offline I am so sick of the politically correct left always throwing the false accusation that when a word is used it is degrading to someone else.
The latest bee in my bonnet is that of Rahm Emanual's usage of the word "retarded" and whimphishly backed down when politically correct people from the Special Olympics called on him to appologize.
THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN CORRECT if he had said, "Physically and mentally hanicap people are worthess peices of shit" THAT would deserve rightful condemnation.
All he meant by that statement was that some in his party were being stupid.
CONTEXT is important.
I see nothing wrong with using words like faggot, nigger, or retard when used in certain contexts. I think it is absurd to always assume because a word is used that the person using it hates someone else.
How many times we as atheists have joked about how we are "heathens". Does that mean we hate ourselves?
If we are going to take this attitude all the time then South Park which is far from a bigoted show, should be banned.
It is getting insane to me that people care more about words than actual intent in actions. If Rohm were advocating the oppression of mentally handicap people, then I would agree.
"Retarded" does not mean the same thing in his context as when a doctor discribes a mental condition.
How far should we take this?
Should we not say things like "fire retardant"?

I love my left theists and atheist friends in that they are not stuck in a bigoted past. But damn do I feel like there is a kneejerk reaction they can't seem to step away from.
This reaction is absurd and is treating him like he is Hitler in support of a master race where the enfirmed and ill should be done away with.

Not every time my theist co-workers tell me I am going to burn in hell litterally means they hate me or wish me ill. Not every time I tell them their god is fiction means I hate all Christians and want to become Stalin.

I did read what you wrote. So far I agree. With one acception.
Even here, this is where it gets sticky. I am quite sure OTHERS, besides you, and even non-gay people are reading this wishing or not wanting this thread to even exist. You and I get it so in that sense we have an understanding as to a word's usage. The sticky part is not all people will agree as to when and where.
So the problem would still be who gets to decide. Which makes everything including words situational. Which proves my point that nothing is black and white. But I agree in principle, not absolutes, the person you use any word around should have that understanding.
I think we do understand each other so if you want to end it, I do too. I do appreciate your patience and it is important to talk about.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some lead paint to eat. I think I didn't eat enough yesterday.

No, that's not a problem. I already told you "who gets to decide." I suspect you're at least bright enough to understand that discussing words and using them are two very different things, yes?
I think I didn't misread Tomathy's quote directly above. I simply expanded on it.
I simply added that THAT too can be a problem because those within a pejorative's group, whatever group we are talking about won't always agree. Some will say, never. others will say only in the context of a discussion about bigotry, but not comedy, even if it is poking fun at bigotry, and others would say only if it is poking fun at bigotry.
WHICH is why I said in principle I agree with him, it should be up to the individual in the group, but it cant be an absolute because no one will ever agree all the time. Which leaves words as a case by case situation.
And Tomathy and I were discussing when where and how words fit in. So of course discussing words and using them are two different things.
I think he understands me, and I hope he understands me too.

Now if you want to argue that he didn't do a good job of it, that is a different subject. But that is what I saw. Hollywood is not exactly into promoting bigotry.
Do you think he could of gone into an executive's office and made the pitch, "I hate Jews, lets make comedy promoting hatred of Jews?

If Hollywood hated Jews then why did Mel Brooks make a living poking fun at himself?

Not to mention Mel in that movie played a penny pinching tyrant and the leader of Dark Helmet(spoof of Darth Vader)
Or how about the "black" reference when Dark Helmet(Rick Morannis) was "combing the desert" and asks

Well technically he wanted to make a funny movie. Its kinda obvious he was looking for a reaction from the audience, im not sure if that makes it right I mean what has that got to do with anything. But I lost interest in this thread a long time ago. I just think that clip is too funny.

regardless of anything you have said you missed the entire point to me posting the vid. The fact is it is funny. Its funny dispite not being PC. Thats why I posted it. At least I found it funny and im whiling to bet im not alone, even among the people who disagree with you im sure some found it funny. I thought it was funny too. But since you didn't say " I think this is funny". In the context of the entire thread and all the passions shooting both ways, WITHOUT the context, I took that as "OH YEA, YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY?"
Now that I know the context of WHY you posted that, I understand.
Ambiguity is impossible to avoid in life and just because someone doesn't make things clear doesn't mean someone else has to jump the gun and plug in intent because of a personal bias.
