We are a cult
My mom heard me listening to a recent show and made a comment about this being my cult (she said the same about the FFRF) aren't we all getting tired of hearing that shit?

i love it when atheists are accused of being something that organized religion actually is..
Yeah...I'm tired of it too. I think the school yard taunt of "It takes one to know one!" is appropriate in these situations.
It's certainly one of the more hair brained suggestions a theist can throw.
Enlightened Atheist, Gaming God.
When people accuse us of being a cult that's when you ask what the person's definition of a cult is. It will most likely be one of 2 things
1) Something that in no way describes the RRS or any other atheist/agnostic organization
2) Something that describes orgaized religion to a T
"It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan
A cult refures to numbers and becomes religion when enough people accept the mass delusion.
Atheism is not a cult. We dont "pray" to nothing and we dont have a holy book. We dont sacrafice goats or barbaque kittens. We dont promote pediophilia or worship hitler.
And we are just as politically diverse as any theist. Some here are of the PC ilk while others dont mind the words flying. There are atheists for and against the death penalty. There are atheists for and against gun ownership. There are atheists who like country music and wear the rebel flag. There are atheists who have voted republican. There are atheists who have and do serve in the military.
We are not a "cult". People who call us that are allowing their own insecurities of "I am afraid of being proven wrong" through the indoctrination they have been feed.
"Question with boldness even the existance of God, for if there be one, surely he would pay more homage to reason than to that of blindfolded fear" Thomas Jefferson.
So do people who believe in the Christian god want to class all people who question that deity as being part of a "cult".
Or could it be that these people who ignorantly call us that merely not used to someone challenging what they claim?
I am sorry you Mother cant see past her own insecurities.
Easy to trash something once you start from the assumption that it deserves demonization. That shows intelectuall cowardice and fear.
Christians have nothing to fear from atheists, at least the ones open to debate dont. But the ones who demand our silence and want us to take a back seat to them are in for a world of hurt over a fight we didnt want or start.
Our skepticism is not a result of being abused as kids. It is not a result of having a bad experiance. Our skepticism simply comes from questioning. There is only one good reason to me to be an atheist. It has nothing to do with being a rebel or pissing people off. The only reason to be an atheist is that one does not see evidence that would intelectually obligate them to buy a claim.
So anyone calling us a cult is merely giving themselves an excuse not to examine their own claims. We are not genocidal mainacs out to start orgies on public streets. We simply dont buy any god claim because we do not see sufficiant evidence warrenting us to change our position.
I feel for you . It is a shame that people cant get past there own fear.
