Poetry by Brian37 (poems by an atheist)

I post all over the web, but I want a back up in case my computer or one particular website goes down.

I have decided to edit this post because I do not like giving people the wrong impression. I cannot read Shakespeare to save my life. I just remember this one line from act 5 scene 5 and put my own spin on it. I've had to explain this over and over so here I decided to put that in this post so there is no more presuming what I know or don't know. But the plot of MacBeth is the old lesson, you can have everything and nothing at all at the same time. And how did all that cruelty serve you in the end? But I do not like play summeries calling him a Nihisist, because it is possible to not do what he did, and accept life as being finite, and sitll have morals without religion. 

 

NEW EDIT 9/19/22 I got pissed at myself that I was scared to read MacBeth, so tonight, I forced myself to read it online. Now mind you, I did not understand it line for line, but basically Macbeth was an assdhole who murdered his way to the top, and did not believe the 3 witches prophcies. He murdered Duncan and had Banquo murdered. Banquo's ghost haunts Macbeth. And made the grave mistake of attacking McDuff's family and killing them(If I am reading this correctly) But Lady MacBeth has a guilty conscience and kills herself, upon finding out Macbeth basically says that life is not worth living and he should go down with a fight anyway, but refuses to fight  Macduff face to face and Macduff kills him as the hero. ( I SERIOUSLY read the entire play every line, tonight.  I even know where the famous line "double double, toil and trouble". comes from. The three witches, basically saying "look out Macbeth" your ass is in trouble. 

So basically the moral of the play, don't be a fucking asshole when trying to get to the top, or "the bigger they are the harder they fall". Reminds me of the movie Scarface and all the shitty things Tony did to get to the top and all for not. But Sosa in that case was not a good guy either.

Until the extinction of humanity new ones will be invented

And all our yesterday's Gods have been created by fools

The way to tribal death. Out out brief myth

Claims are but a walking shadow, a poor reflection

That struts our narcissism upon the stage

And then is heard no more. It is a tale

Told by the credulous, full of sound and fury

Signifying nothing.

Heros 

Do not seek fame

Care not of wealth

Or worldwide acliam

 

Not of gods

Not of rank

Not of selfish

Attention gain

 

Heros are

Not of gender

Mostly those

The world wont remember

 

Heros are

Those whom support you

Through good or bad

Never judge you

 

Heros are

Not sports figures

Famous generals 

From a battlefield

 

Heros are

Of the mundane

The people whom

You spend the most time with

 

They are 

Your teachers and friends

The attentive parents

Who don't let you sink

 

The ones who do it

No matter what

Who value you

The way you are

 

Heros are not

Blusterous braggarts

Telling everyone

About their conquests

 

Heros are anyone

No matter the age

Gender or relationship

Who come to your aid

 

Of a paycheck

Or political status

Of a real hero

They seek no status

 

Hero is

Our compassion

Our fellow humans

Can have in common.

To escape North Korea

Flee from it

Into China

 

Both those closed states

Protect their borders

Shoot to kill

Are their orders

 

It matters not

That they are unarmed

All they want

Is to be free from harm

 

Rocks equal war?

Sell fear some more

Migrants with kids

He'll shoot them dead?

 

It's despot talk

Out of desperation

He needs a distraction

From the Mueller investigation 

 

What have we wrought

To allow such rot

In our politics

Villify innocent humans

 

They have no rocks

And all they want

Is to flee famine and violence

It's why they come

 

To villify

To dehumanize

To scapegoat the innocent

I'll always dispise 

 

It is up to the compassionate

All now to rise

For unless we do

It's democracy's demise

 

The are not armed invaders

Like Germany took Poland

They are not Communist Russians

Whom support monster Stalin

 

Why would one walk

Thousands of miles

Without machine guns

Tanks, much less rocks

 

If that of such

Was to do us harm

There is no war

Just a bigotry farm

 

Headed by

A hate filled man

If he can't have us

Then no one can

 

Rock, Paper, Scissors 

He thinks it is a game

Scapegoating anyone

Who gets in his way

 

But now is the day

We say no to hate

Apathy and complicity 

Are not the way

 

Now is the time

Beyond party line

United we stand

In our pluralism

 

Rock, riffle, borders

His rhetoric will kill us

Eat us with division

If we let it

 

Our military takes orders

But this is beyond us

We are not North Korea

We are not China

 

We are America

No matter our labels

E Puribus Unum

The people's car

The end of classes

The dream of a madman

He'll please the masses

 

The conquest superior

Dreaming of the past

The dynasty of the Romans

He wanted to replicate

 

The easy access

To to the arts

Outdoor plays

Came at a cost

 

It was not at all

The Furrer's goal

That art or leasure 

Were of freethought

 

But to promote

To indoctrinate 

Control every aspect

Of his German state

 

It is not the same

As our rustbelt states

Whom once had unions

And valued livable wages

 

To peacefully assemble

Was not for to think

But do his bidding

Blindly support the state

 

Stolen artwork 

Of conquered lands

Modernism he rejected

Anything not planned

 

Yes he did

Sell Strength Through Joy

Through nothing but

Your lifespan short

In 1O million years

You will be no more

 

In the constellation

Of Auriga

Your sun holds you hostage

Close at bay

 

Absorb you do

Most sunlight

Closer than Mercury 

Black as night

 

Hurricane winds

Of catigory 5

On planet earth

Seem quaint in light

 

In light of its size

And it's speed

In our 365

It blink's in deed

 

One orbit it takes

In one day

Around it's star

At dizzying speed

 

Too hot at all

For life to concive 

Its hungry parent

Won't let it leave

 

Oh hot Jupiter

You started in the cold

As if you were playing

At Lambeau Field

 

In early January 

Agaist the Vikings

But gravety and greed

Your  sun pulled you in 

 

And blistering speed

Like the carnival ride

That centrifugal force

Puts your back side

 

Up against the wall

You cant see at all

But your body mass

The industry

Fails to see

Unfortunately

In Sandy

20 kids

History repeats

 

Huberty

Long before

Bloodied the floor

In the Arch's door

 

All soft targets

Under our flooded market

Churches, theaters

Concert masacers

 

Do not tell me

Your policies work

Not with pain

Of the average of

 

40 thousand

Of all types

From domestic violence

Accidental and suicides

 

Do not tell me

It's about rights

Its about money

In the industry's sights

 

And how dare you

Calously say

To medical doctors

Whom see it every day

 

"Stay in your lane"

Regardless of pain

The distroyed lives

Day after day

 

6 years it's been

6 teachers, 20 kids

But long before

Even then

 

Greed took over

In the late 70s

Put profit above

Public safety

 

End the insanity

Let not one lobby

Be the bully

That prevents gun safety.

When archeologists

Dig up our past

Proving that nothing ever lasts

 

Peace is the cry

Of every corner

Of our home

Yet it is never

 

Never obtained

For any long stretch

Short term memory

Our species have

 

Kings and dictators

Despots and presidents

All promote 

Their accomplisments

 

But since when

Has it ever been

Friend or foe

Escapes the end?

 

Vally of the kings

Didn't save Tut

Communism

Didn't save Po Pot

 

The Taj Mahal

Built out of love

Lincoln's Memorial

Did nothing to stop

 

Our mortality

As a species

Death none escape

Like we'd please

 

All humans do

Is compete

Some on top

Others no reprieve 

 

But we decieve

Decieve ourselves

As a species

The end none want to see

 

Better be

As we can be

The attitude

Of humanity

 

That we are

To recogonize

A confluence of events

Of human, technology, weather and ego

Turned the tropical yellow bird

Into a crimson runway

 

Initiated elsewhere

By bomb threats

Multiple flights

Diverted to it

 

A tiny island chain

Volcanic in origin

Off the African coast

They both landed

 

In stride all took

From pilots to passengers

To the tower

A minor inconvience 

 

But then fog took over

And and pilots talked over

And one assumed

Till it was all over

 

Which one to taxi

When to take off

Miscommunication 

Was the boss

 

And one pilot

Made the assumption

That the takoff order

Which was not given

 

Gave him permission

To push forward

A decorated pilot

Whom insisted

 

To take the time

To refuel

Later investigation

Found out not needed

 

And the pilots

Of multiple jets

Talked over each other

Cancelling  each other out

 

Thrusters forward

It was too late

The ace pilot

Tried to leapfrog

 

But instead

Did not clear

Pancaked on top

Causing two jumbo bombs

 

Coal mine is 

And underestimation

Of human ego

When we lack patience.

Why do you always wake me?

 

I can handle the hording

Of the couch

Of the bed

The way you spread out

 

So much so

I am cornered

Like a sardine in a can

Just because you can

 

I give you your space

After tons of rest

I must relent

 

To your kneading

And your pleading

Feed me, feed me

I know you knead me

 

The roosters arn't crowing

The birds arn't chirping 

The stock market bell

Has yet to open ringing

 

Yet you still insist

You lovable pest

Of waking me up

No matter what

 

Do me one favor

You cute fur ball

My best friend feline

Never stop at all

What you say

In the early hours

Before daybreak

 

Its not just

That you want to eat

I really understand

Florence was 

Barreling down

On the east coast

I had to get out of town.

 

I could not decide

How to escape

North or south

Or east to evade

 

I delayed and delayed

Till the last minute

Then finally left

In a panic

 

Rushed to remove

Things from my yard

Put my cat in his crate

Started my car

 

Got stuck in traffic

On the way there

The bullseye closing in

In my despair

 

But I made

It to my hotel

Hundreds of miles inland

Avoided the coastal hell

 

Relief you'd think

Was on my menu

But the hurricane destroyed

Paths to return to

 

Day after day

I watched the news

Wondering how

I'd make it through

 

How to get  back

I had no Waze

Just a cheap burner phone

No way to get through the maze

 

Minute by minute

Road reports

Would have the them open one second

The next second closed

 

I was desperate

To get back home

Not knowing which roads

Would be open

 

Highway 40 

Became a river

My panic set in

Gawdzilla delivered 

 

I suffer from

Anxiety and depression

My hesitation

Made return the question

 

I did not want

To make the attempt

To return

Only to get stuck

 

My online friend

Offered to

Sit by the phone

Till I got through

 

Just in case

A road got blocked

On my way back

I could call

 

Call him up

And adjust my barrings 

To get home

Without worrying

 

No it was not

Katrina or a Tsunami

My house fared fine

I was lucky

 

But mentally

I can say

Just being there

I found my way

 

Gawdzilla is

His nickname

Glad to have

This online friend

 

To understand

Those who have anxiety

Can magnify

Any event

 

To the point

Panic sets in

He kept me calm

It was understandable

When we didn't know better

That we are all we have

There is noone above

Picking winners or losers

To join it's special club

 

John got it right

If we'd only imagine

A world without violence

Or religious tribalism

 

That was then

Humanity will not win

If we dwell in mythology

We've done great things

As a species

We've put humans on the moon

And cured many a disease 

 

I know we have it in us

To look to the future

Without fear of threats

Of a fictional torture

 

We act like gangs

Frack Native reservations

Dispite the pollution they create

 

Cashing all their checks

Clearing out their banks

Spend it on short term profits

Without humanity in mind

 

Look out over here

Watch out over there

Cant aford a planet B

A classmate set 

Your hair on fire

Now you deal

With the orange liar

 

You put it out

With no desire 

To run or hide

From the liar

 

Bullies do

What they do

Just like in class

Just like in office

 

Your parents toiled

In unimaginable work

So you could migrate

To do your best

 

And that 

You did

Came to America

To defend

 

Our Constitution

Our institutions

The ones our founders

Intrusted you with

 

And sad to see

Far too many

Take the word

Of that orange bully

 

Istead of yours

Honorable and loyal

Under Presidents 

Of both parties

 

A-Political

Above the frey

Unlike one man

Whose oath he betrays

 

Sides with 

A KGB thug

Ignors, attacks his own intel

Pulls out from under you, the rug

 

Undermining

The work that you do

That keeps us safe

From Putin's views

 

Now I could get on

How we need to get off coal

But that is a separate poem

Still willing to honor your work as a whole 

 

Your dad rased you well

Anyone attacking you

Is unwise

And will meet their demise

 

The world hates bullies

Just like in class

The asshole who set your hair on fire

Did not deserve a pass

 

And here you are 

In a hero's fasion

Standing up to yet another

In steely fasion

 

Keep it up Hill

Your mining for truth

Every cockroach

You killed

Every lie you told

Innocent or malevolent

Are rehtorical absurd examples

And the answer is

Of course not, I wasn't alive back then.

The sound

Of me

Saving your ass"

 

Apollo 13's class

The mundane isn't

As sexy 

As the Hollywood screen

 

Sure it was 

An emergency

But engeneers 

And redundency

 

Lucky number 7

Triple the threat

In reality

Nobody was seriously hurt

 

The conductor

In the yard

Poisonous chemicals

In tankers on rails

 

Like a bronco

The desiel got spooked

Took off on him

Protocol not good enough

 

The portable derailer

Was vaporized

An alturnative to stop it

Was devised

 

Don't grab the bull

By the horns

But the tiger by the tail

Was how the day was won.

 

The train was stopped

Not like in an action movie

Just like the Apollo 13 3

Made it home safely

 

Little that  heros do

Are  by the seat of their  pants

But through lots of training

And diliberation and collaboration 

 

END...

 

Poem inspired by the movie "Unstopable" which was losely based on the runaway trian "CSX 8888" real event in 2001. But just like the Apollo 13 event, most of what saved the day was knowledge, calm and collaboration. Hollywood makes for great movies, but real mundane heros don't fly by the seat of their pants.

Blind loyalty insane

 

He's using the White House

Like an abusive spouse

Admires authoritarinans 

Denouncing his own intel

 

His followers

Under his spell

Like a snake charmer

Here's  what he wont tell

 

The cobra's lips

Are sewn shut

Kissing the baby

It's all a trick

 

Give all your love

To just one man

Blind loyalty

Is his real demand

What would await 

Once she passed through

That genocidal gate

 

Most would meet

Their horrible fate

Work sets you free

Music her reprieve 

 

The virtuosos 

Were targets too

But to survive

They wrote and played music

 

Amongst the smoke stacks

And Mengele's  lab

Songs like "Fantasy"

The musicians wrote down

 

It could have all died

But Francesco Lotoro 

Long after 

The Nazis fell

 

Knew that 

It must be saved

The music of

The imprisoned slaves

 

And he is right

About Wallfisch's plight

Music never dies

In such grim light

 

It is up to those

To remember the bones

To remember the ashes

And piles of shoes

 

The mountains of suitcases

Never to be used

The stolen lives

Remembered though music

 

Anita hinted

About today

Some seem to forget

Their history

 

And meanwhile

In DC

One ignorant man

Does not see

 

How easy 

It is to treat

Another human 

Easy to beat

 

But as Lotoro 

Rightfully says

No matter what

Music wins

This poem was in inspired by a 60 minutes story about the Musicians and composers who died and survived Auscwitz.

Lifetime Curator Franchesco Lotoro has spent his live digging through archives, family histories, records of the camp to save the music played by the dead and survivors. Anita -Lasker-Wllfisch was a survivor and mucisian forced to play music at the camp.

The story made me cry, just like thinking about Ann Frank. It is horrifying, but also is a huge example how humans find a way to cope under extreem conditions.

All it takes 

To make a buck

Is to conflate words

To the absurd

 

Clamari is squid

Escargot is snail

Fondu is melted cheese or chocolate

And Aju is meat juice

 

Ham is pig ass

And we've all heard rump roast

So what is with fish eggs

I think that is gross

 

Dont get me wrong

We all have different tastes 

I simply hate any asshole

Who thinks it is a mandate

 

Some like anchovies 

On their pizza

Order that around me

I will flee ya

 

Some love

Portobello mushrooms

But just like cooked cabbage 

I have to leave the room

 

Some like spinach 

But I will never finish

It smells like the foilage 

I raked up in my back yard

 

This isn't bird's nest soup

We are not on safari 

I do have to admit

I have had calimari 

 

Why do humans

Insist on expoiting

Different tastes 

With excotic names?

 

It all ends up

In the same place

Goes through our bowls

Into the toilet.

 

No matter how much or little we pay.

A Slag, a spongehead 

Those "other" new comers 

With everything they did

 

Invaded your land

Took your jobs

Landed here

By force

 

By any means

The bigot defends

Fighting any and all migration

Despite all humans  migrate

 

There is no 

Alien nation

There simply is

Human migration

 

If we are 

To be the best nation

We should value

"E-Pluribus Unum"

 

"Alien" only means

To that not familiar

But should not treat

Deadly

 

But friendly

On a planet of 7 billion

It still remains

We are the same species.

Eeons ago

I could not

In the suburbs

Both of us atheists

Comming from different places

A couple 3  debates

And you always put me in my place

 

You started out poor

Moved into a trailer

I started out middle class

And ended up in a trailer

 

Now you are in an apartment

In a tornado state

I have to worry about hurricains 

It is our fate

 

Two atheists

Raised differntly 

In completly different 

Geography

 

Drone on if you will

About country music

Don't expect me

To ever get used to it

 

But I do know

Dispite our differences

In twighlight years

There are many fears

Of the aflicted, declining

Of the reaper does not care

 

But there are those 

Who are there

Who do their duty

Of nurses and phycical therapy

 

In hopes

That one day

The elderly, can hopfully

Go back home

 

But time is a bitch

It cares not 

Of class

Or politics

 

It takes our loved ones

No matter our stripe

No matter what we argue

At any piont in life

 

I do know this

In my mother's darkest hours

In her facing mortality

There are those who were there for her

It's not the surface

Of the sun

But this microscopic tsunami 

Has the planet on the run

 

We think we are so smart

Profits off the charts

Only to crash and burn

When will humanity learn

 

Lack of funding

Continually ignoring

Chasing the fast buck

Impending disaster forwarning 

 

Race, Religion

Politics, and national origin

This common enemy

Is not selective

 

Entire nations

Are now prisons

Livelyhoods going bust

Everyone is at risk

 

I worry about my friends

The Walmart worker in Oklahoma

Who has no choice but to work

Even if he were to get sick

 

I worry about my cab driver

Whose business has hit the skids

Lost countless fares

Is worried about paying her rent

 

I worry about nurses I know

And physical therapists

Who care for the eldery

What if they get sick?

 

Was it worth it metal birds

To pack them in like sardines

Petri dishes airports become

Compounding the dangerous scene 

 

When are the world's billionaires

Going to get a clue

You cant simply speed for profits

And think nothing will happen to you

 

This tsunami doesn't care

Of your title or your class

It will take you just as eaily

As the rest of us

 

And just like global warming

It is not to be ignored

We only have one planet

On which we all live

 

Long term planning

Not just the next quarter

What will we leave the next generation

If we don't care about each other?
